Effect Of Restricted Feeding On Gravid Sows, C.S. German, R.W. Seerly, R.C. Wahlstrom
South Dakota Swine Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1967
In recent years the restriction of the feed intake of pregnant gilts and sows has become an accepted management practice. However, no one has yet determined the proper feeding levels for given phases of the gestation period, This report is a continuation of a study to compare two feeding plans using the same ration for both plans. The total feed consumed was the same for both groups of sows.

Common Sheep Parasites, Cooperative Extension South Dakota State University
Common Sheep Parasites, Cooperative Extension South Dakota State University
SDSU Extension Fact Sheets
Internal parasites are among the most troublesome problems affecting South Dakota sheep. A heavy infestation of destructive sheep parasites may cause death, and an even greater toll is taken in the form of setbacks in the entire flock. A "wormy" flock, for example, is seldom a profit maker.

Bvd -- Bovine Virus Diarrhea (Mucosal Disease), Cooperative Extension South Dakota State University
SDSU Extension Fact Sheets
Virus diarrhea of cattle was first recognized in New York in dairy cattle in 1946. In 1952 a similar disease, but with a high death rate of affected animals, was seen in Iowa and was called "mucosal disease." It has since been determined that strains of virus causing diarrhea and mucosal disease are closely related. Now bovine virus diarrhea (BVD) is the generally accepted name for this disease which can appear in various forms.

Ibr -- Infectious Bovine Rhinotracheitis (Red Nose), Cooperative Extension South Dakota State University
SDSU Extension Fact Sheets
Infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR) was first recognized as an acute respiratory disease of beef cattle in Colorado feedlots, but is now seen in cattle in nearly every state. Although most often diagnosed in feedlot cattle, this virus disease is not limited to beef or feeder cattle. There is no apparent difference in susceptibility between breeds, sexes, or ages. IBR may occur during any season of the year but is more frequent in the fall and early winter when there is greater movement of cattle.

Figuring Feeds For Swine, Cooperative Extension South Dakota State University
Figuring Feeds For Swine, Cooperative Extension South Dakota State University
SDSU Extension Fact Sheets
The progressive swine grower wants optimum performance from his animals. Adequate amounts of nutritionally balanced rations are necessary for this performance. A balanced ration, strictly speaking, is a combination of feeds furnishing the various nutrients in such proportions, amounts, and form that will, without waste, properly nourish a given animal or group of animals for a particular purpose.
Feeding Brood Sows, Cooperative Extension South Dakota State University
Feeding Brood Sows, Cooperative Extension South Dakota State University
SDSU Extension Fact Sheets
Pregestation, gestation, and lactation are critical periods in swine nutrition. Work at many experiment stations has shown that sows will produce larger litters if their energy intake is limited during gestation than if they are allowed access to a self feeder. In the gestation period weight gains must be controlled, because over-fatness often decreases litter size besides increasing feed costs. In the nursing period, plentiful milk production requires liberal feeding, however, there is evidence that milk production is to some extent related to the number of nursing pigs and it would appear reasonable to feed the lactating sow on a …

Ventilation For Swine Buildings, Cooperative Extension South Dakota State University
Ventilation For Swine Buildings, Cooperative Extension South Dakota State University
SDSU Extension Fact Sheets
The trend in swine housing toward multiple farrowing systems and confinement growing and finishing units has resulted in a need for an increased amount of environmental control. Close control of temperature, relative humidity, fresh air and sanitation have become a matter of prime importance. Of these, temperature control, relative humidity and fresh air through proper insulation and ventilation require precise planning and designing in swine housing systems.

Insect Control On Beef Cattle, Cooperative Extension South Dakota State University
Insect Control On Beef Cattle, Cooperative Extension South Dakota State University
SDSU Extension Fact Sheets
In controlling external parasites on beef cattle, a rancher must use extreme care in selecting the proper insecticide. Follow the directions exactly as they are printed on the label. Do not apply a spray mixture that is too concentrated nor apply too much to each animal. Young calves and sick animals are especially susceptible to overdoses of some insecticide preparations. On the other hand, make sure the spray is mixed at recommended concentration; incomplete control may make it necessary to repeat treatment. Use preparations that are registered and formulated especially for livestock use.
