Insect Control On Beef Cattle, Cooperative Extension South Dakota State University
Insect Control On Beef Cattle, Cooperative Extension South Dakota State University
SDSU Extension Fact Sheets
In controlling external parasites on beef cattle, a rancher must use extreme care in selecting the proper insecticide. Follow the directions exactly as they are printed on the label. Do not apply a spray mixture that is too concentrated nor apply too much to each animal. Young calves and sick animals are especially susceptible to overdoses of some insecticide preparations. On the other hand, make sure the spray is mixed at recommended concentration; incomplete control may make it necessary to repeat treatment. Use preparations that are registered and formulated especially for livestock use.

Developing Replacement Beef Heifers, Cooperative Extension South Dakota State University
SDSU Extension Fact Sheets
The first winter following weaning is a period of special concern in the growth and development of replacement heifers, particularly for those to be bred as yearlings. Sufficient growth and development of young beef heifers through the first winter reflect proper nutrition plus good health and sanitation practices that will hold sickness and death losses to a minimum.

Pine Needle Abortion Among Cows Grazing Foothill Ranges, L. D. Kamstra, C. Cogswell
Pine Needle Abortion Among Cows Grazing Foothill Ranges, L. D. Kamstra, C. Cogswell
South Dakota Cow-Calf Field Day Proceedings, 1975
The frequent occurrence of pine needle abortion in cattle grazing foothill ranges having tree stands of ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) causes management problems for many ranchers in South Dakota, Wyoming, Colorado, Idaho, and California as well as many areas in Canada. Surveys (1973-75) covering eight counties in western South Dakota and eastern Wyoming indicate the area loss to be approximately 700 calves annually even with good management to prevent pregnant cows from consuming pine needles. Loss of the cow as well from infection of a retained placenta is not unusual. In 1975, for example, one rancher lost 38 calves from …

The Cattleman And Dystocia, Leslie Ball
The Cattleman And Dystocia, Leslie Ball
South Dakota Cow-Calf Field Day Proceedings, 1975
There are many factors which contribute to dystocia (calving difficulty). The cattleman should be aware of these factors so he can make sound management decisi0ns and reduce loss. In fact, losses from dystocia extend far beyond death loss in cows and calves. There are significant hidden losses of a more subtle nature. In cows with dystocia at the San Juan Basin Experiment Station, calving interval was increased 13 days, calves were 32 pounds lighter at weaning and 14% more were open than cows with normal calving histories. Data from the Meat Experiment Station at Clay Center indicates the same type …

Crossbreeding Effects On Growth And Carcass Traits Of Beef Calves, W. L. Smith, W. R. Parker, C. A. Dinkel
South Dakota Cow-Calf Field Day Proceedings, 1975
The cow-calf efficiency project described elsewhere in this bulletin (A.S. Series 75-42) required the production of straightbred and crossbred heifers sired by two bulls, one each from the Angus and Charolais breeds. The purpose of this study was to summarize growth and carcass data from these first crosses. Because the breeds are represented by only one sire, breed comparisons should not be made from these data.

Dry Or High-Moisture Corn With Hay Or Haylage At Various Levels For Feedlot Lambs, L. B. Embry, W. S. Swan
Dry Or High-Moisture Corn With Hay Or Haylage At Various Levels For Feedlot Lambs, L. B. Embry, W. S. Swan
South Dakota Sheep Field Day Research Reports, 1975
Several experiments at this station with feedlot cattle have shown that high-moisture corn grain has frequently resulted in improved weight gain and feed efficiency over dry corn. There have been indications that the level of roughage and the moisture content of the roughage may have an influence on the comparative value of dry and high-moisture corn.
This experiment was designed to study the value of dry or high-moisture corn in all-concentrate rations and with various levels of alfalfa-brome hay or haylage for growing and finishing lambs.

South Dakota Sheep Field Day Research Reports, 1975
A research project was designed and initiated in the fall of 1970 to evaluate the effect of breed of sire, level of pre- and postweaning nutrition, age at first breeding and type of birth on subsequent reproductive performance of the eww. The growth of the ewe, wool production and lambing performance data of the ewes at 12, 24, and 36 months of age will be reported in this paper.
Tomorrow's Beef Breeds, Bernard Jones
Tomorrow's Beef Breeds, Bernard Jones
South Dakota Cow-Calf Field Day Proceedings, 1975
Historians have established that cattle were on this planet 7,000 years ago. Breeds of cattle have been identified for several hundred years. A breed is defined as "a relatively homogenous group of animals within a species, developed and maintained by man". In 1920 the average college textbook in the U.S. listed 16 beef cattle breeds compared with 21 breeds listed in the 1969 college textbooks. In 1975 the up-to-date college textbook could list 68 cattle breeds. This is the number identified by the National Association of Animal Breeders.

SDSU Extension Fact Sheets
Livestock numbers, feed prices and land prices in South Dakota have been increasing annually, but the number of acres available for production of feed and forage has not. Cattle numbers have passed the 5.5 million mark for the first time in 40 years. Feed costs have doubled and, in some cases, tripled in the last year or so. Livestock prices have not increased materially and the livestock producer is in the biggest cost-price squeeze that he has experienced in many years.

Effects Of Atrazine On Penned Pheasants And The Occurrence Of Stress Marks On Feathers, Thomas Orin Melius
Effects Of Atrazine On Penned Pheasants And The Occurrence Of Stress Marks On Feathers, Thomas Orin Melius
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Doses of 4 g of atrazine (AAtrex) were not lethal to penned hen pheasants (Phasispus colchicus), but levels of 6, 8, 10 and 12 g induced mortality. Pen studies to determine the effects of atrazine on reproduction of hen pheasants were conducted with two replicates of the basic test. Birds were administered treatment levels of 0, 100, 200, or 400 mg of atrazine per hen per week. Egg production and gain in weight of hens were unaffected by the treatments. Replicate A eggs were unaffected by the treatments. Replicate A eggs were unaffected in shell thickness and pipping rates, while …
Food Habits Of Young-Of-The-Year Fishes In Abbey Pond, South Dakota, Randall D. Radant
Food Habits Of Young-Of-The-Year Fishes In Abbey Pond, South Dakota, Randall D. Radant
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Food habits of young-of-the-year largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides), bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus), black crappie (Pomoxis nigromaculatus), yellow bullhead (Ictalurus natalis), and yellow perch (Perca flavescens) were studied during 1973 and 1974 in Abbey Pond, South Dakota. Organisms found in young-of-the-year fish stomachs and in plankton samples were identified and counted in the laboratory. Zooplankton, aquatic insects and fish were the most important food organisms consumed by young fishes. Using Ivlev’s electivity index food electivity by the fishes for zooplankton was calculated. The size-specific food habits of young-of-the-year largemouth bass progressed from entomostracans to aquatic insects to fish. In most cases zooplanktons …
Factors Affecting The Development Of Lipase Flavor In Butter, Lawrence I. Bell
Factors Affecting The Development Of Lipase Flavor In Butter, Lawrence I. Bell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Current trends in the dairy industry have resulted in an increase in the incidence of lipase flavored butter. Raw cream, fresh and aged 24 h, was divided into 3 fractions and heat treated at temperatures of 72 C, 85 C, and 93 C. Each fraction of cream was churned into butter, with the butter divided and stored at -28. 9 C and 4.4 C. Lipase flavor development was measured organoleptically, by acid degree value (ADV), and free fatty acids (FFA) using a colorimetric procedure. Age of the cream had a significant effect (P< .01) on FFA and. ADV .levels, whereas heat treatment .of the cream had a significant effect (P< .01) on flavor only. Storage time had a significant effect (P< .01) on FFA, ADV, and flavor and the temperature of storage had a significant effect (P< .01) on FFA ·and flavor. Correlation between FFA and ADV was 0.86. There was no correlation between flavor and either JTFA or ADV

Effect Of Rhenium On Nitrogenase Activity Of Azotobacter Effect Of Rhenium On Nitrogenase Activity Of Azotobacter Vinelandiiinelandii, Stephen L.R. Erdody
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In recent years the biochemical aspects of molybdenum have come under increasing investigation. One phase of the investigation has centered on the function of Mo in nitrogenase enzymes. One way to study the biochemical function of an element with another which may mimic its function. A vanadium containing mitrogenase from Aztobacter vinalaudii has been prepared which displays properties indicative of replacement of the Moo by V. Attempts to prepare an active tungsteu analog have been unsuccessful as W exhibits an inhibitory effect. It has been suggested that rhenium analogs of Mo-nitrogenase rather than V or W, should be more useful …
