Criteria For Determining Feasibility Of Rural Water Supply Systems In Livestock Production Areas, Lynn L. Peterson Jan 1975

Criteria For Determining Feasibility Of Rural Water Supply Systems In Livestock Production Areas, Lynn L. Peterson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Feasibility guidelines for proposed and existing community rural water supply systems have been developed around such parameters as population density, size of group, and ability to repay. However, these guidelines were based on more densely populate areas where water is used primarily for domestic purposes. These guidelines do not necessarily fit situations where population density is low and water availability enters in as a factor of livestock production. It is apparent that guidelines need to be developed for such situations. With this intention, the objectives of this study were established as follows: 1. Determine what criteria are pertinent to the …

Encephalitis Epidemiology In South Dakota : The Development And Use Of An Encephalitis Simulation Model And A Computerized Human Serum Bank To Determine Western And St. Louis Encephalitis Activity, Curtis Dean Wilson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The investigation reported here represents an attempt to relate a virus vector simulation model with field observations made in South Dakota over the past years. The viruses that will be examined are two encephalitis viruses, western equine encephalitis (WEE) and St. Louis encephalitis (SLE). Since the encephalitis viruses are grouped within the arboviruses, viruses transmitted by an arthropod vector, any epidemiological study of the human and horse encephalitis outbreak process must include a study of the vector, in this case mosquitoes, and the factors affecting that vector. It is this complex relationship of virus, vector and hosts that led those …

Bentonite Or Sodium Bicarbonate In High-Concentrate Lamb Diets, Gerald Bruce Huntington Jan 1975

Bentonite Or Sodium Bicarbonate In High-Concentrate Lamb Diets, Gerald Bruce Huntington

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A rapid change of ruminants from high-roughage diets, often used in background feeding programs, to high-concentrate diets used in the finishing phase tends to promote various digestive tract disorders. A major change in diets gradually made over a period of 3 to 4 weeks generally allows time for the rumen microflora to become adapted to the new conditions and minimizes digestive problems. However, performance during this period is often unsatisfactory. In the short-term feedlot finishing of ruminants for slaughter, the importance of profitable weight gains during the initial adaptation phase of the feeding period becomes relatively more important. Methods of …

Evaluating Net Return In Beef Cow-Calf Enterprises, C. A. Dinkel Jan 1975

Evaluating Net Return In Beef Cow-Calf Enterprises, C. A. Dinkel

South Dakota Cow-Calf Field Day Proceedings, 1975

Most research reports are directed toward the improvement of only one or a few of the important traits influencing efficiency of beef production. This is brought about because experiments of a given size can only study a limited number of variables at one time. It has become increasingly apparent that the effects of combining these experimental results must be considered in the application of research results on individual ranches. This has led to the concept of systems research and development of decision-making computer programs. These programs can assist the rancher in making such decisions as choice of management tools, choice …

Maximizing Reproductive Efficiency In The Cow Herd, W. R. Parker Jan 1975

Maximizing Reproductive Efficiency In The Cow Herd, W. R. Parker

South Dakota Cow-Calf Field Day Proceedings, 1975

Maximum reproductive efficiency in a cow herd will not often be achieved accidentally. Every producer must set for himself a goal of the level of reproductive efficiency that he desires to achieve in his herd. A goal that I believe is realistic for South Dakota cattle producers is to have 95 to 100% of his cow herd calve every 12 months and wean a 500 to 600 pound calf. Whatever the goal is, it seldom will be achieved by chance alone. We can't "hope" a group of heifers into reaching puberty by 14 months of age, we can't hope 95% …
