Changes In Field Stored Large Hay Packages, L.D. Kamastra, P.K. Turnquist, C.K. Krueger, C.E. Johnson

Agricultural Experiment Station Technical Bulletins (1939-2011)

During a 3-year period, 12 large hay packages (six alfalfa, six prairie hay) were made using either Haybuster or Hesston process and stored from 8 to 29 months. Stacks were core sampled at periodic intervals for physical (moisture, density) and quality parameters (crude protein, neutral-detergent fiber, Crampton and Maynard cellulose, acid-detergent fiber, acid-detergent lignin, ash and in vitro dry matter digestibility. The hay package storage areas were located in north-central South Dakota.

Barley Proteins, Cooperative Extension South Dakota State University

SDSU Extension Fact Sheets

The problem with barley is that there is no single percentage that is suitable. Barley is both a nutritious livestock feed and the principal grain used in the production of malt. The same varieties are used for both purposes. For this reason it has two market classes: feed barley and malting barley.

Feeding Brood Sows, Cooperative Extension South Dakota State University Jun 1980

Feeding Brood Sows, Cooperative Extension South Dakota State University

SDSU Extension Fact Sheets

Pregestation, gestation, and lactation are critical periods in swine nutrition. Work at many experiment stations has shown that sows will produce larger litters if their energy intake is limited during gestation than if they are allowed access to a self feeder. In the gestation period, weight gains must be controlled, because over-fatness often decreases litter size, besides increasing feed costs. In the nursing period, plentiful milk production requires liberal feeding; however, there is evidence that milk production is to some extent related to the number of nursing pigs. It would appear reasonable to feed the lactating sow on the basis …

The Effects Of A Set Circuit Weight Training Program On Strength And Muscular Endurance Of College Age Men, Craig E. Olsen Feb 1980

The Effects Of A Set Circuit Weight Training Program On Strength And Muscular Endurance Of College Age Men, Craig E. Olsen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Numerous studies have been conducted on various weight training systems and their effects upon strength, muscular endurance and cardiovascular endurance. These studies and the resulting programs formulated from them are of special concern to the athletes and their coaches. Of particular concern is the in-season weight training program designed for maintenance of strength and increased muscular endurance. It is the purpose of this investigation to study the effects on strength and muscular endurance of one specific weight training program, hereafter called the set circuit program. Unlike a regular circuit program, the set circuit program requires all sets of an exercise …

The Effect Of Ferric-Nitrilotriacetic Acid On Selected Hemogram Parameters Of Gestating And Lactating Swine And Their Offspring, Thomas Allen Heirigs Jan 1980

The Effect Of Ferric-Nitrilotriacetic Acid On Selected Hemogram Parameters Of Gestating And Lactating Swine And Their Offspring, Thomas Allen Heirigs

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Ever since man has moved to confinement farrowing of swine, the problem of iron-deficiency in baby pigs has increased. The problem can be partially alleviated by various treatments which can be employed by the swine producer. However, many of these treatments stress to the young piglet and involve much time and labor, which may not be available during parturition. A beneficial tool to the porcine producer would be the elimination of both the stress placed on the neonatal pig and of the extra labor providing a hematinic which would be administered prepartum to the dam. The hematinic employed must be …

Variability Of Factors Influencing Stand Establishment In Green Needlegrass Populations From Western South Dakota, Terril J. Heilman Jan 1980

Variability Of Factors Influencing Stand Establishment In Green Needlegrass Populations From Western South Dakota, Terril J. Heilman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In recent years, there has been an alarming conversion of rang-land to cropland in western South Dakota. More importantly, much of this increase in cropland has resulted in the plowing of large areas of land where the soils are unsuited or only marginally suited to continuous cultivation. During the period from 1967 to 1975, the extent of this trend represented a net increase of about 200,000 of class IV soils, which are used for the production of annual crops. Historically, such unwise expansions of cropland to land areas that are susceptable to severe wind and water erosion have resulted in …

Effectiveness Of Lasalocid With Solar-Dried Acid Treated And Ensiled Shelled Corn Finishing Rations, G. Kuhl, J. Giles, L. B. Embry Jan 1980

Effectiveness Of Lasalocid With Solar-Dried Acid Treated And Ensiled Shelled Corn Finishing Rations, G. Kuhl, J. Giles, L. B. Embry

South Dakota Cattle Feeders Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1980

Three shelled corn storage forms (solar-dried, propionic acid-treated and ensiled) were also investigated in this trial because of the intensive interest in minimizing the energy costs required for drying or preserving high-moisture corn and to examine the relative feeding value of corn stored in these three ways. A horizontal plastic Silopress bag was used to store the ensiled shelled corn in order to gain experience with this ensiling systems.

Forage Finishing Exotic Crossbred And British Cattle, V. L. Anderson, C. A. Dinkel Jan 1980

Forage Finishing Exotic Crossbred And British Cattle, V. L. Anderson, C. A. Dinkel

South Dakota Cattle Feeders Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1980

The success of forage-finishing cattle depends on differences in price and availability of grain and forage. Since there is limited information available on finishing exotic crossbred cattle on all-forage rations, a 2-year project was conducted to study the differences in feedlot performance and carcasses from forage- and concentrate-fed animals.

Feedlot Performance Of Yearling Heifers Fed Pro-Sil Treated On Urea Supplemented Corn Silage, G. Kuhl, C. W. Carlson, L. B. Embry, F. Shubeck Jan 1980

Feedlot Performance Of Yearling Heifers Fed Pro-Sil Treated On Urea Supplemented Corn Silage, G. Kuhl, C. W. Carlson, L. B. Embry, F. Shubeck

South Dakota Cattle Feeders Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1980

The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of cattle fed Pro-Sil treated corn silage or untreated (control) corn silage supplemented with a urea-based protein supplement at time of feeding. In addition, plastic horizontal Silopress silage bags were used to store the Pro-Sil treated and control corn silages in order to gain experience with this silage storage method.

South Dakota Cattle Feeders Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1980

The study reported here was conducted to determine how different types of feed mixtures and storage conditions affect the biological activity of vitamin A acetate. The study was initiated June 19, 1978, continued through the summer months and completed January 9, 1979.

Carcass Comparison Of Exotic Crossbred Cattle Fed On Forage Versus Concentrate, V. L. Anderson, C. A. Dinkel Jan 1980

Carcass Comparison Of Exotic Crossbred Cattle Fed On Forage Versus Concentrate, V. L. Anderson, C. A. Dinkel

South Dakota Cattle Feeders Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1980

Increased demand for hamburger-type beef has caused increased interest in producing lean beef at less cost. Exotic crossbred cattle and high forage rations have potential to reduce production costs. This study was conducted to evaluate carcasses from half sib exotic crossbred cattle on all-forage and high-concentrate finishing rations.

Methods Of Processing Meats, S. C. Seideman, W. J. Costello Jan 1980

Methods Of Processing Meats, S. C. Seideman, W. J. Costello

South Dakota Cattle Feeders Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1980

Newer methods of processing meats along with the development of new meat products will become more and more apparent as the meat industry adapts to the changing life-styles of Americans. The fast-food service industry as well as the hotel, restaurant and institutional trade will become an ever more important market for meat products. Electrical stimulation, massaging/tumbling, restructured steaks, hot-boning and retort pouch packaging represent more recent meat products and processing methods.
