Effect Of Vitamin A Injections On Blood And Liver Levels In Cattle Fed Low-Carotene Diets, R. M. Luther, L. B. Embry, L. F. Bush, R. Rosenboom Jan 1980

Effect Of Vitamin A Injections On Blood And Liver Levels In Cattle Fed Low-Carotene Diets, R. M. Luther, L. B. Embry, L. F. Bush, R. Rosenboom

South Dakota Cattle Feeders Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1980

The objectives of these experiments were twofold, first, to study the effects of length of feeding period and dosage level of injected vitamin A on vitamin A status of steers fed a low carotene finishing rations without supplemental vitamin A, and, second, to study the effect of dosage level of injected vitamin A on liver storage of the vitamin following a period of feeding considered to have resulted in major depletion of prior body stores of the vitamin.

Whole Or Rolled Oats For Finishing Cattle, W. Vaderwert, L. B. Embry, R. M. Luther Jan 1980

Whole Or Rolled Oats For Finishing Cattle, W. Vaderwert, L. B. Embry, R. M. Luther

South Dakota Cattle Feeders Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1980

Whole and rolled oats were compared in finishing ratiosn for steets. On basis of feedlot performance calculated from carcass weight and 60% yield, steers fed rolled oats gained faster (10.5%) and more efficiently (11.6%) than those fed whole oats. Carcass characteristics measured favored steers fed rolled oats and having slightly heavier carcasses.
The oat rations did not compare favorably with normally expected performance from high-concentrate rations with corn as the major grain. Other research is needed to properly evaluate oats as a major feed grain in cattle finishing rations.

Hei-Gro Intravaginal Device For Feedlot Heifers, R. W. Rosenboom, A. L. Slyter, L. B. Embry

South Dakota Cattle Feeders Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1980

The experiment reported here was to further rest the device. The objective was to see if it offered any benefit over Synovex-H implants. The effect of position of heifers in relation to steers in the feedlot was also investigated, since there have been some recommendations that heifers be separated from steers by as much as 40 feet.

Effects Of Avoparcin On Performance Of Feedlot Heifers, L. B. Embry, L. F. Bush, M. J. Goetz Jan 1980

Effects Of Avoparcin On Performance Of Feedlot Heifers, L. B. Embry, L. F. Bush, M. J. Goetz

South Dakota Cattle Feeders Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1980

Avoparcin is a glycopeptide antibiotic produced by a strain of streptomyces candidus with activity against certain gram positive organisms. It has been reported to reduce the ratio of acetate to propionate produced during rumen fermentation and to improve weight gain and feed efficiency of feedlot cattle. This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of 30, 45 and 60 grams per ton of avoparcin and 30 grams per ton of monensin in the feed on weight gain, feed utilization and carcass quality of finishing heifers over a 140-day feeding period.

Comparative Performance Of Crossbred Heifer Calves Fed Mga Or Implanted With Synovex-H, G. Kuhl, C. W. Carlson, L. B. Embry, F. Shubeck

South Dakota Cattle Feeders Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1980

Numerous studies have demonstrated the substantial economic benefit of using hormonal growth stimulants with feedlot heifers. The feed additive melengestrol acetate (MGA) and ear implants such as Synovex-H are commonly used for this purpose. Consistent improvements in both rate of gain and feed efficiency have been shown with these growth promotants. However, relatively few trials have directly compared MGA and Synovex-H under controlled conditions. Thus, the major objective of this study was to determine merit of these two growth stimulants.
In addition, this study presented an opportunity to compare the feedlot performance and carcass characteristics of two different groups of …

Supplementation For The Cow Herd, David L. Whittington

South Dakota Cow-Calf Field Day Proceedings, 1980

Supplementation programs are very much a part of our cow-calf program. The type of supplementation may vary throughout the year as well as from year to year. A good manager knows the type of supplement that his herd needs. Supplements are available in many forms from commercial distributors and can consist of many types of feeds, minerals and vitamins. Many producers choose to develop their own supplements utilizing feeds produced on their ranch or that can be purchased locally.
A "supplementation program" may be defined as "a program which provides the difference between the nutrients required by livestock and the …

However, these products resulted in limited success and use.

Calculating Optimum Daily Gain For Wintering Replacement Beef Heifers, L. Jost, D. L. Whittington, J. A. Minyard Jan 1980

Calculating Optimum Daily Gain For Wintering Replacement Beef Heifers, L. Jost, D. L. Whittington, J. A. Minyard

South Dakota Cow-Calf Field Day Proceedings, 1980

Research has demonstrated that weight of the yearling heifer is an important factor affecting puberty and initiation of the reproductive cycle. Work at several institutions including South Dakota State has demonstrated that rate of gain from weaning to start of the breeding season influences the proportion of heifers that settle. The objective of this project was to provide the producer with an easy way of calculating this desired rate of growth.

Beef Production Of Simmental-Angus And Hereford-Angus Crossbred Cows, H. L. Miller, G. H. Deutscher, F. W. Crandall Jan 1980

Beef Production Of Simmental-Angus And Hereford-Angus Crossbred Cows, H. L. Miller, G. H. Deutscher, F. W. Crandall

South Dakota Cow-Calf Field Day Proceedings, 1980

In recent years there has been increased utilization of exotic cattle to increase production in beef herds. Crossbreeding European breeds with domestic British breeds has resulted in larger calves at weaning and slaughter due to increased milking ability of the dams and gaining ability of the crossbred calves. Crossbreeding beef cows with European breeds has resulted in larger cows having higher nutrient requirements than the domestic breeds or crosses. Hereford-Angus crossbred cows have been used extensively in South Dakota and have performed well under local conditions.
This study was designed to compare reproductive performance and calf production of Sinnnental-Angus (S …

Longevity Of Crossbred Vs Straightbred Beef Cows, Vernon L. Anderson Jan 1980

Longevity Of Crossbred Vs Straightbred Beef Cows, Vernon L. Anderson

South Dakota Cow-Calf Field Day Proceedings, 1980

Cow longevity measured in years of production affects efficiency by altering the proportion of cows in production. Assuming constant cow numbers, removing cows from the herd at younger ages for standard culling criteria results in higher replacement rates and a smaller proportion of the herd in production. This paper compares longevity of Angus, Charolais and reciprocal cross cows under drylot and pasture management systems. Age at removal and reason for removal were evaluated.

Winter Feeding Requirements For Beef Cows During Cold Weather Stress, W. C. Mccone Jan 1980

Winter Feeding Requirements For Beef Cows During Cold Weather Stress, W. C. Mccone

South Dakota Cow-Calf Field Day Proceedings, 1980

In finishing rations for cattle and sheep, experimental data have shown that feed requirements increase when the weather is cold or windy. Relatively high priced proteins are wasted when a high energy feed is more suited for cattle under stress due to cold temperatures. Research has aided in furnishing winter feeding guidelines for finishing cattle, but very limited work has been done on winter feeding for pregnant beef cows. These requirements may vary due to stresses of relatively low weather temperatures. By collecting cow weights, calving and breeding data, the effects of varied winter cow rations can be evaluated.

Productivity Of Cows In Relation To Breed Cross And Environment, G. W. Rahnefeld Jan 1980

Productivity Of Cows In Relation To Breed Cross And Environment, G. W. Rahnefeld

South Dakota Cow-Calf Field Day Proceedings, 1980

The decade just passed will probably go down as the most challenging period in the history of beef cattle production in North America. Events which have contributed include the acceptance of performance recording programs, artificial insemination and its ever-broadening application in farm and range herds alike, national sire evaluation programs and the Exotic Boom. This latter event has probably had the greatest significance, for the importations of foreign cattle have necessitated a complete reappraisal of the traditional concepts of beef animals on this continent.

Cow Efficiency, C. A. Dinkel Jan 1980

Cow Efficiency, C. A. Dinkel

South Dakota Cow-Calf Field Day Proceedings, 1980

If we are to discuss cow efficiency, perhaps we should define the term so that everyone is thinking about the same thing. Efficiency is usually thought of as a relationship between input and output and is frequently calculated as a ratio of either one to the other. We have used pounds of Total Digestible Nutrients (TDN) required to produce a pound of product either at weaning or at slaughter. The TDN input is that consumed by the cow for the year from weaning to weaning plus the consumption of the calf from birth to weaning or slaughter. In our situation, …

A Survey Evaluation Of South Dakota Beef Cattle Production, Vern Dooley Jan 1980

A Survey Evaluation Of South Dakota Beef Cattle Production, Vern Dooley

South Dakota Cow-Calf Field Day Proceedings, 1980

Profit in a cow-calf operation depends largely on pounds of calf weaned. This in turn is dependent upon calf crop percentage and weaning weight of calves. Producers need to recognize losses associated with low fertility and light weaning weights and be aware of some of the factors contributing to these losses. This study was designed to aid producers by providing information on the level of couunercial beef production in South Dakota. We have further sought to identify some factors influencing that level of production.
This report summarizes information supplied through a sequence of producer completed surveys. Thus, it was through …

Irrigating Alfalfa In South Dakota, James R. Johnson, Charles R. Krueger, Lyle A. Derscheid, Darrel D. Pehl, Paul L. Carson Jan 1980

Irrigating Alfalfa In South Dakota, James R. Johnson, Charles R. Krueger, Lyle A. Derscheid, Darrel D. Pehl, Paul L. Carson

SDSU Extension Circulars

Alfalfa performs admirably an irrigated crop in South Dakota-so well that it is often neglected. When given attention, it can realistically maintain irrigated yields of 6 to 7 TIA each year in most of South Dakota where 1 to 2 T are produced on dryland. Irrigated land that will produce 100-130 bu corn will produce 5-7 T alfalfa. On poorer irrigated land that produces 50-70 hu corn, one can expect 3-5 T alfalfa. Alfalfa has higher water requirements for peak yields than most other crops. It may not reach its full potential yield in any part of the stale without …
