Ensiled High-Moisture Corn Inoculated With A Biological Additive For Growing-Finishing Lambs, Richard M. Luther, Cherie Lakner
Ensiled High-Moisture Corn Inoculated With A Biological Additive For Growing-Finishing Lambs, Richard M. Luther, Cherie Lakner
South Dakota Sheep Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1985
The effect of biological silage additive, Lactobacillus plantarum, on the feeding value and chemical characteristics of high-moisture corn was determined in a 123-day trial with growing-finishing lambs. Lambs (62 lb. average) fed untreated or inoculated corn performed similarly in terms of body weight gain, feed intake or feed efficiency. The corn treated with the microbial preparation was of higher quality as indicated by the lower pH and higher titratable acidity at feeding compared to the untreated corn.

Effects Of Breed Of Ewe And Management System On The Production Of Lamb And Wool, W. J. Busch, A. L. Slyter
Effects Of Breed Of Ewe And Management System On The Production Of Lamb And Wool, W. J. Busch, A. L. Slyter
South Dakota Sheep Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1985
The ability of ewe lambs to produce a lamb crop at 12 months of age can improve the economic outcome for sheep production. In addition to environmental factors, breed differences in ewe lamb fertility exist. The Targhee is a typical ewe breed popular in range lambing systems. The Suffolk is a popular meat-type breed used in many farm flock system. The Finnsheep is a breed known for multiple births and early maturity. Typically, fertility is improved by crossbreeding. The two most meaningful measures of ewe flock productivity are pounds of wool produced and pounds of lamb weaned per ewe exposed. …

Effects Of Breed Of Ewe And Management System On The Production Of Lamb And Wool 5. Effect Of Lambing At 12-14 Months On Cumulative Lifetime Production, W. J. Busch, A. L. Slyter
South Dakota Sheep Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1985
Data from Targhee, Suffolk x Targhee and Finnsheep x Targhee ewes which had completed a lifetime production study were used to determine the effect of lambing at 12 to 14 months on cumulative production. Ewes that lambed at 1 year of age gave birth to and weaned more lambs as well as gave birth to and weaned more pounds of lamb on a cumulative basis than ewes that failed to lamb at 1 year of age. Wool production was similar for the two groups of ewes. Ewes that produced a lamb at 1 year of age were more productive than …
Synchronizing Estrus With 5 Or 10 Mg Prostaglandin F2Α In The Ewe, K. F. Hoppe, A. L. Slyter
Synchronizing Estrus With 5 Or 10 Mg Prostaglandin F2Α In The Ewe, K. F. Hoppe, A. L. Slyter
South Dakota Sheep Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1985
The length of the breeding period can be decreased through estrous synchronization. This enables the producer to reduce the length of the resulting lambing period allowing for more efficient use of labor and facilities during lambing. Past synchronization trials at this station have found intramuscular injections of 10 or 15 mg PGF to be effective in synchronizing estrus during the normal breeding season. This study evaluates 5 or 10 mg PGF for relative effectiveness for estrous synchronization.
Induction Of Lambing At Weekly Intervals, A. L. Slyter, W. J. Busch, L. B. Bilger
Induction Of Lambing At Weekly Intervals, A. L. Slyter, W. J. Busch, L. B. Bilger
South Dakota Sheep Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1985
Lambing season is the time in the sheep production year which demands the largest input of labor. Due to problems associated with the birth process, it is also one of the most critical times. By controlling the time of parturition, producers are better able to schedule labor and facilities more effectively. Ewes induced to lamb on specified days allow for more uniform groups of lambs for management practices. Flumethasone, a glucocorticoid, will induce parturition in ewes when administered late in gestation. The objective of this study was to determine the optimum range of days for once per week treatment for …
Control Of Lambing Through Synchronization Of Estrus And Induction Of Parturition, A. L. Slyter, K. F. Hoppe
Control Of Lambing Through Synchronization Of Estrus And Induction Of Parturition, A. L. Slyter, K. F. Hoppe
South Dakota Sheep Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1985
The ability to program the time of birth for our livestock species offers several advantages to the producer. By concentrating lambing into a short defined period or periods it allows better utilization of labor and facilities. In addition, it should increase lamb survival since better supervision can be maintained for these specific periods. Furthermore, lambs are grouped more closely by age and can be more uniformly managed in such groups. Two trials (1983-84 and 1984-85) were conducted to study the effectiveness to prostaglandin F2α to synchronize estrus and flumethasone to induce parturition in a planned lambing program.

Evaluation Of Seasonal Habitat Use By White-Tailed Deer In Eastern South Dakota, Thomas James Kramlich
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Seasonal use of selected habitat types by white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) was investigated using radio telemetry locations during 1983 and 1984, on a predominantly agricultural area in east-central South Dakota. In the summer of 1983, radio-collared deer used corn, shelterbelts, and wetlands in proportion to their availability. Soybeans, grainfields, and grasslands were avoided. Deer selected shelterbelts in the fall and wetlands during the winter months, for protective cover. Habitat use shifted in the spring and shelterbelts received heavy use, once they became free of drifted snow. Shelterbelts continued to be selected by deer during the summer of 1984. IN the …

Effectiveness Of Shelterbelts In Improving Microclimatic Conditions For Pheasants In Eastern South Dakota, Todd Matthew Schneider
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
To evaluate wintering habitat for ring-necked pheasants (Phasianus colchicus), this study compared microclimate regimes , as determined by wind and temperature, between shelterbelts containing 1 or 2 rows of coniferous tree species with shelterbelts comprised entirely of deciduous tree species and between wetland and shelterbelt habitats. Maximum temperatures within both shelterbelt types, particularly deciduous shelterbelts, were cooler than outside ambient air temperature during summer. Throughout November, December, and January, minimum temperatures in coniferous shelterbelts types were significantly (P≤0.04) warmer than deciduous shelterbelt types. Effectiveness of shelterbelts in reducing wind velocity decreased from an average of 71% during summer to 28% …

The Effect Of Prostaglandin F2cl Administered During Early Gestation In Ewes, Paul E. Naasz
The Effect Of Prostaglandin F2cl Administered During Early Gestation In Ewes, Paul E. Naasz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Synchronization of estrus in the cyclic ewe can be accomplished by the use of prostaglandin F2a. Estrous synchronization offers the possibility of more uniform offspring, concentration of parturition which would allow for better use of facilities and labor, and the utilization of outstanding sires through artificial insemination. Some current estrous synchronization regimes for ewes consist of exposure to rams for a period of time followed by an intramuscular injection of prostaglandin F2a (PGF) to all ewes that have not previously mated. Administration of PGF to ewes that have already mated, however, may lead to termination of pregnancy. Before application of …

A Laboratory Study Concerning The Control Of Black-Tailed Prairie Dogs (Cynomys Ludovicianus) With Sodium Monofluoroacetate (Compound 1080), Charles David Ward
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Sodium monofluoroacetate (Compound 1080) is a highly toxic rodenticide which has ·been used in control of prairie dogs (Cynomys spp.). The toxic effects of Compound 1080 to non-target species caused Compound 10SO to be banned as a rodenticide. This study was initiated to develop a low-level bait which could be effective in prairie dog control and would have a higher margin of safety to non-target species. Compound 1080 was administered to 83 black-tailed prairie dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus). The primary research objective was to determine the acute ·oral median lethal dose (LD50) in black-tailed prairie dogs. This was established at 0.173 …

Lungworm Infections, Reproduction And Summer Habitat Use Of Bighorn Sheep In Custer State Park, South Dakota, Gary C. Brundige
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) were once indigenous to the Black Hills and Badlands of South Dakota. When European settlers moved into this region during the late 1800' s, market hunting, loss of habitat, and introduction of animal diseases and parasites caused the subspecies of the region, the Audubon's bighorn sheep (O. c. auduboni), to become extinct by 1916 (Buechner 1960). To reestablish bighorn sheep in the Black Hills, 8 Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep (O. c. canadensis) were introduced into the former range of the Audubon's sheep in 1922. Finding the habitat to be very suitable, this small population increased to …

Response Of Five Spring Wheat Cultivars To Drought, Gregory Keith Hess
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Response of plants to water stress are numerous and interrelated. Morphological traits and growth patterns have been studied and reviewed extensively. Root growth patterns, leaf area and thickness, presence of cuticle hair and waxes, leaf movement, and wilting are only a few traits studied. Metabolic functions and how water stress affects these processes through stomatal behavior, transpiration rates and carbon dioxide exchange rates have also been reviewed. Plant breeders are continually searching for traits which aid in selecting for high yielding genotypes in any one environment. Moisture is often limiting in South Dakota's environment, leading to relatively low grain yields …

Relative Effectiveness Of Estrous Synchronization Methods In The Ewe, K. F. Hoppe, A. L. Slyter
South Dakota Sheep Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1985
The value of synchronization is in reducing the breeding period. Prostaglandin F2α (PGF) has been demonstrated to effectively synchronize ewes during the normal breeding season. Different methods of synchronizing estrus with PGF have been proposed. The purpose of this trial was to compare the relative effectiveness of singular PGF injection vs. a dual injection of PGF 10 days apart to a control for synchronizing estrus in the ewe during the normal breeding season.
Effects Of Breed Of Ewe And Management System On The Production Of Lamb And Wool 4. Cumulative Production Per Ewe Entering The Study, W. J. Busch, A. L. Slyter
Effects Of Breed Of Ewe And Management System On The Production Of Lamb And Wool 4. Cumulative Production Per Ewe Entering The Study, W. J. Busch, A. L. Slyter
South Dakota Sheep Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1985
Total lifetime weight of lamb weaned and weight of wool produced per ewe of the original flock is a meaningful way of expressing the overall economic advantage in production from various breeds or production situations because it takes longevity into consideration. Longevity will have an impact on lifetime production. Very few accurate figures are available for attrition rates for various groups of ewes. It is reasonable to figure an overall reduction from culling and death of about 5% the first year and 10% per year thereafter. At least part of the breed or production system differences in cumulative lamb and …
