Effects Of Various Dietary Salt Additions On Silica Urolithiasis In Male Rats, Carl J. Schreier
Effects Of Various Dietary Salt Additions On Silica Urolithiasis In Male Rats, Carl J. Schreier
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Urinary calculi composed primarily of silica have been identified in range animals by several researchers. Silica calculi have also been found in dogs, humans, rats and guinea pigs. Forman et al conducted a detailed analysis of calculi. They found.that ashing at temperatures of 1500 C decreased calculi weight by 20%. Silica and calcium were shown to make up most of the remaining mineral content. Calculi from grazing ruminants in western Australia contained Si02, but further analysis showed that they were a mixture of substances. Mcintosh found that of the calculi analyzed 47% contained weddelite (Calcium oxalate.H20) and opaline silica, 13% …
Plant Regeneration In Callus Cultures Derived From Young Inflorescences Of Switchgrass (Panicum Virgatum L.), Wayne A. Sargent
Plant Regeneration In Callus Cultures Derived From Young Inflorescences Of Switchgrass (Panicum Virgatum L.), Wayne A. Sargent
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) is a native, tall, warm season, perennial, sod-forming grass with vigorous roots and rhizomes. It is found growing throughout most of the United States. However, it is most abundant in the Great Plains Where it is a co-dominant of the Tall Grass Prairie. Grasses have played a predominant role in natural pastures and reseeded grasslands. The world's human population depends heavily on grasses for food and they are a major source of protein and energy for animal growth and performance. Improved breeding methods for grasses are therefore needed to produce higher yielding and better quality forages …
The Effects Of Biological Type And Breed Composition On Production In Beef Cattle, Michael D. Monfore
The Effects Of Biological Type And Breed Composition On Production In Beef Cattle, Michael D. Monfore
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Evaluation of breeds has developed beyond simple phenotypic performance comparisons to estimation of the various genetic components, additive and nonadditive, contributed by a breed (Dickerson ,1969). Alenda et al.; Dillard et al. and Robison et al. demonstrated methods for estimating breed genetic and maternal effects in crossbred populations. Alenda and Martin extended the use of regression models to allow estimation of optimal breed combinations. This procedure, based on work by Dickerson, involves construction of a mathematical model describing performance for a trait as the sum of breed additive, breed heterotic, breed maternal and maternal heterotic effects. Crossbreeding results have been …

The Face Fly: Progress Towards Establishing An Efficient Pest Management Program, Emmett R. Easton
The Face Fly: Progress Towards Establishing An Efficient Pest Management Program, Emmett R. Easton
Agricultural Experiment Station Technical Bulletins (1939-2011)
Face flies are often found in large numbers in the presence of cattle, especially on warm days. Estimates of the number of face flies are based on flies counted on the faces of cattle and are subject to a lot of variation, therefore, better sampling techniques are necessary. The distribution of the face fly in South Dakota was determined by facial counts of flies from a vehicle using binoculars, during early morning hours along highway transits in eastern and western South Dakota from June through August. Both chemical and non-chemical methods of managing this pest are discussed, as well as …
The Effect Of Photoperiod, Ergocryptine Injection And Melatonin Feeding On Reproduction In The Ewe, Cindie Marie Luhman
The Effect Of Photoperiod, Ergocryptine Injection And Melatonin Feeding On Reproduction In The Ewe, Cindie Marie Luhman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
One of the most intriguing aspects of reproduction is the reversible fertility governing seasonal breeding. Sheep are one of the many species that exhibit a circannual rhythm in reproduction, because they start estrous cycles in fall and winter months and become anestrus in spring and summer months. Seasonal changes appear to control this. Ewes seem to be more completely seasonal than are rams because only very limited ovarian activity, fewer follicles, and no ovulation occurs in ewes, although follicular size remains unchanged. Most rams will produce viable semen throughout all seasons, however, Lincoln and Short and Almeida and Lincoln reported …
Effects Of Reflux Ratio And Beer Feed Temperature On Distillation Energy Consumption, James R. Lemmer
Effects Of Reflux Ratio And Beer Feed Temperature On Distillation Energy Consumption, James R. Lemmer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Interest in small scale fuel ethanol production from agricultural crops and residues was intense in the late 1970’s but has diminished in recent years. The current demand for fuel ethanol is being met primarily by large scale producers. The Nebraska Alcohol Program began, in 1978, to promote a 10 percent ethanol 90 percent gasoline blend called "gasohol", in an effort to conserve petroleum fuels and to provide an alternative market for agricultural commodities. The high cost of producing ethanol in small scale plants and the limitations of ethanol as a fuel in conventional engines have limited the expansion of ethanol …
Evaluation Of Gravel Excavation On Ground Water Movement And Quality, Nilaksh Kothari
Evaluation Of Gravel Excavation On Ground Water Movement And Quality, Nilaksh Kothari
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The resource ground water is used by nearly one-half the nation's population for drinking purposes, and 70% of all ground water used is for irrigation. Yet, surprisingly protection of the ground water resource is not covered by a single federal act. Consequently, ground water is a subject of widespread misconceptions. These misconceptions have adversely affected the development, conservation and quality of the ground water. In the mining areas detailed information on the hydrologic environment is needed due to recent mining regulations. In Brookings county of South Dakota, large scale gravel excavations have occurred during the last twenty years. These excavations …

A Comparison Of Type Of Birth, Breed Of Sire, Postweaning Nutrition, And Age Of First Breeding On Lifetime Lamb And Wool Production In Range Ewes, Steven M. Kappes
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Due to present economic pressures, sheep producers must utilize every management tool in the most profitable manner. Therefore, many traditional practices must be reevaluated. Research has indicated that some possible areas to improve lamb and wool production are in the use of crossbred ewes, breeding ewes to lamb at 1 yr. of age, feeding a high level of postweaning nutrition, and selection for twins, lamb production, wool production, longevity, and lifetime production. Research is usually performed at experiment stations where the conditions are not typical of those found for commercial operations and therefore may affect the application of the results. …
The Relationship Between Obesity And Fertility In The Lethal Yellow Mouse (Ay/A; C57bl/6j), Kim William Jeppesen
The Relationship Between Obesity And Fertility In The Lethal Yellow Mouse (Ay/A; C57bl/6j), Kim William Jeppesen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The lethal yellow gene, (Ay) is a genetic mutation in mice which causes a number of defects. First described in 1905 by Cuenot, the Ay/- mouse has been the subject of one hundred or more studies. Yet, primary genetic and molecular lesions caused by Ay remain unknown. Cuenot reported that Ay caused three aberrant phenotypic alterations; these included yellow coat color, obesity, and embryonic lethality in Ay homozygous embryos (Ay/Ay). Since 1905, a number of other Ay-induced abnormalities have been reported. Among these aberrations is Ay-induced reproductive senescence. It is this particular Ay character (i.e. reproductive failure of Ay/- mice) …
Plasma Pepsinogen Test For Hypobiotic Nematode Larvae In Abomasal Glands Of Sheep, Richard Alex Jensen
Plasma Pepsinogen Test For Hypobiotic Nematode Larvae In Abomasal Glands Of Sheep, Richard Alex Jensen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The American Association of Veterinary Parasitologists reported that nematodes in sheep represent an unquestionably great production loss, and that the absence of deworming on a routine basis would hamper modern sheep production. After ingestion, the infective third stage larva, or L3, exsheaths and burrows into the digestive glands, and becomes a fourth stage larva, or L4. According to Armour, 18 to 21 days after L3 ingestion occurs, the nematode reaches sexual maturity. However, while in the gastric glands, these L4 invade the parietal, or hydrochloric acid (HCl) secreting cells, damaging them, and replacing them with non-acid secreting cells. This leads …

The Effect Of Various Proteins And Amino Acids On Salenium Toxicity To Rats Fed Corn-Based Or Wheat-Based Diets, Ailene Annette Herr
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Selenium occurs in the earth's crust in varying concentrations. It is crystallochemically related to sulfur, and sulfide ores frequently contain selenium. The commercial production of selenium is usually as a by-product of other mining operations, especially copper mining. It occurs in different oxidation states depending on the pH of the soils. At acidic pHs the predominate form is selenite. That present as selenite is bound to a high degree by iron colloids in soils and is thus not readily absorbed by plants. Once taken up by plants selenium becomes, to varying degrees, available to animals. Selenium can be either harmful …

Snout Ventilation And Cooling Effects On Swine, Leslie R. Heard
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The commercial value of the 3.14 million hogs and pigs marketed by South Dakota farmers in 1980 was 278 million dollars. This represents 10 to 12 percent of the total agricultural product sales from South Dakota farms, and ranks South Dakota among the top 10 hog production states. Researchers have documented increases in swine productivity through optimization of the thermal environment for farrowing facilities, which could result in increased profits for South Dakota farmers. Agricultural engineers must continue to develop and evaluate techniques for improving the animal environment to provide producers the means for enhancing productivity. Benefits of relieving the …
Economic Feasibility Of Producing Fuel Alcohol From Fodder Beets In A Small-Scale Plant, Mohamed K. Habash
Economic Feasibility Of Producing Fuel Alcohol From Fodder Beets In A Small-Scale Plant, Mohamed K. Habash
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Oil is the principal energy form in all the major developed countries. Most nations domestically produce only trivial quantities. For most of these countries, the energy requirements are met predominantly by oil imports. The Arab oil embargo of October 1973 caused a dramatic jump in the real price of oil. Oil markets were further shocked in 1979 by the Iranian political crisis. Since the beginning of this instability in the world petroleum market, an extremely high level of public concern for liquid fuel energy sources has been created. Farmers have been hit hard by the increases in fuel costs; these …

In response to these changes the meat industry has developed a great variety of processed products such as restructured steak, turkey ham, chicken loaves and turkey patties. In addition to previous changes, there are some economic factors which are responsible for shifts in consumption According to patterns from the Livestock red meats to poultry meats. and Poultry Outlook and Situation Report, real disposable personal income in 1984 has risen nearly 6 percent from the previous year. In 1985, disposable …
Effects Of Breed Of Ewe And Management System On The Lifetime Production Of Lamb And Wool, Wayne Joseph Busch
Effects Of Breed Of Ewe And Management System On The Lifetime Production Of Lamb And Wool, Wayne Joseph Busch
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Sheep production in the United States is highly variable. The sources of this variation are many and may include breed, climatic condition, management system and selection emphasis. The sheep is a highly adaptable animal and the success of an operation may be due in part to the ability of producers to select breeds of sheep best suited to their situation. Over time, two distinct management systems have developed. The first of these may be termed the farm flock system. The farm flock system is typical of the eastern United States in the crop farming areas of the country. This system …

Ribonuclease Ii :A Glycoprotein With Differential Distribution In Tissues Of Two Nonacclimated Cultivars Of Winter Barley, Gregory James Bunkers
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this research was to develop a more efficient procedure that would enable purification of adequate RNase necessary to further characterize the physical, chemical, and catalytic properties-of the enzymes involved. Two cultivars of winter barley were selected because of previous observations showing differences in RNase amounts and types which was related to freeze survival potential. Plant RNases from many species and cultivars of plants have been studied. Reddi proposed a classification system for plant ribonucleases that was later extended by Wilson. All enzymes that cleave a polynucleotide can be identified as either a nuclease or a phosphodiesterase. Wilson …
Tryptophan And Threonine Requirements Of Pigs Fed A Low-Protein, Corn-Sunflower Meal Diet, Barton S. Borg
Tryptophan And Threonine Requirements Of Pigs Fed A Low-Protein, Corn-Sunflower Meal Diet, Barton S. Borg
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The ultimate goal of the pork industry is efficient production of quality pork for the least monetary investment. Most swine diets are formulated using feedstuffs which supply 100% natural protein. Different protein sources differ in their amino acid content and availability. For example, soybean meal has been shown to contain more lysine than sunflower meal and the lysine in soybean meal is more available to the pig than that of sunflower meal. Protein sources which supply the correct balance of available amino acids relative to the needs of the animal are considered as being protein sources of the highest monetary …

Cheese whey is a by-product of the dairy industry and contains approximately 5% lactose, 0. 9% nitrogenous compounds, and small amounts of vitamins and minerals. It has often been treated as waste. In addition to the loss of these nutrients, its disposal creates pollution problems. Lactose which is the chief nutrient in whey, could be more profitably utilized by being converted into ethanol. Unfortunately, naturally occurring strains of brewer’s yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) are unable to metabolize lactose and hence cannot convert it to ethanol. The overall objectives of my study were: 1.) To construct a S. cerevisiae - Escherichia coli …
