Mutations And Antibiotic Resistance In Mycobacterium Tuberculosis, Ryan M. Johnson, Bodhi Brady, Nicklaus Busse, Connor Beckman, Hunter Gloden, Joseph Glasrud, Zachary Smith, Hari P. Nepal, Madhav P. Nepal
Life Science Reports
Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) is a bacterium known to target, infect, and destroy lung cells as well as connective tissues within the body. This bacterium is prevalent worldwide and has infected over a quarter of the current world population, becoming one of the most successful pathogens in history. Due to its extreme transmission rates as an airborne pathogen, MTB strains have been treated with antibiotics such as rifampicin and isoniazid, which inhibit bacterial infection in the human body. These first-round drugs remained as successful mechanisms for slowing and killing the pathogen, notably through rifampicin's inhibition of RNA-polymerase and isoniazid’s ability to …

In-Line Milk Progesterone Monitoring As A Tool For Precision Reproductive Management, Tony C. Bruinjé, Divakar J. Ambrose, Stephen J. Lebalnc
In-Line Milk Progesterone Monitoring As A Tool For Precision Reproductive Management, Tony C. Bruinjé, Divakar J. Ambrose, Stephen J. Lebalnc
Dairy Science and Food Science Faculty Publications: 2022 to Present
In-line milk progesterone (IMP4) monitoring (Herd Navigator, DeLaval) is a technology that automatically detects onset of cyclicity, estrus, and pregnancy. Sampling starts at 20 DIM and occurs on average every 2 d until pregnancy. Estrus is detected based on a decline in progesterone (P4) concentrations below a threshold, and pregnancy is assessed from 30 to 55 d after AI in cows without return to estrus. Here, we review the potential of IMP4 as a tool for reproductive management. In a series of observational studies with up to 158,961 IMP4 records from 4,353 AI events, we characterized predictors of pregnancy per …
Neurosteroids For The Treatment Of Major Depressive Disorder (Mdd) And Chronic Pain (Paper), Meghan Haan
Neurosteroids For The Treatment Of Major Depressive Disorder (Mdd) And Chronic Pain (Paper), Meghan Haan
Honors Capstone Projects
Neurosteroids are endogenous steroids within the brain that act as modulators in neurotransmission. Among their targets are the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptors, which are responsible for inhibitory signaling in the brain. The interaction between neurosteroids and GABA receptors is complex, influencing mood regulation and pain perception. Endogenous neurosteroids have been used in conditions such as postpartum depression (PPD), where fluctuation in neurosteroid levels contribute to the onset of depressive systems. Conversely, exogenous neurosteroids, such as brexanolone and zuranolone, have emerged as therapeutic agents for PPD. These compounds act as positive allosteric modulators (PAMs) on GABA receptors, enhancing inhibitory neurotransmission and …

Transglutaminase Crosslinked Milk Protein Concentrate And Micellar Casein Concentrate: Impact On The Functionality Of Imitation Mozzarella Cheese Manufactured On A Small Scale Using A Rapid Visco Analyzer, Prafulla Salunke, Lloyd Metzger
Dairy Science and Food Science Faculty Publications: 2022 to Present
In dairy-based imitation mozzarella cheese (IMC) formulations, intact casein is critical and imparts IMC with a firm and elastic, stringy, melted texture. Rennet casein (RCN) is the desired ingredient to provide intact casein in IMC and is preferred over milk protein concentrate (MPC) and micellar casein concentrate (MCC). Transglutaminase (TGase), a crosslinking enzyme, alters the physical properties of MPC or MCC and may change IMC functionality. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of TGase-crosslinked MPC and MCC powders on the functionality of IMCs. The TGase treatment included TGase at 0.3 (L) and 3.0 (H) units/g of …

Mathematical Evaluation Of Population Changes Of Lactobacillus Acidophilus And Bifidobacterium Animalis Ssp. Lactis As Free And Encapsulated Cells In Butter, Rakesh Kaushik, Kritika Gaba, Sanjeev Anand, Gemechis Djira
Dairy Science and Food Science Faculty Publications: 2022 to Present
Growing butter markets, domestically and globally, provide opportunities for value-added variants of butter. Adding probiotics to butter could boosts its bioactivity; however, maintaining probiotic viability during storage is a major challenge. Mathematical analysis of probiotic population changes could help improve our understanding of how probiotics interact with butter and storage conditions. Two strains of probiotics in a 1:1 ratio as free cells or Whey Protein Hydrolysate–Maltodextrin (WPH-MD)-encapsulated cells, Lactobacillus acidophilus ATCC 4356 (LA5) and Bifidobacterium animalis ssp. lactis ATCC 27536 (BB12), were separately mixed into butter at 1% levels. Using analysis of covariance, a mathematical evaluation for probiotic population changes …
