Management And Self-Activity: Accounting For The Crisis In Profit-Taking, Stefano Harney Nov 2006

Management And Self-Activity: Accounting For The Crisis In Profit-Taking, Stefano Harney

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The crisis in measurement identified by those working in the tradition of Italian autonomia has consequences for the critique of accounting and management. If both capitalist work and the commodity are today communicative and overtly political, a critique that merely points to these characteristics will have no transformative effect. This paper uses the Trinidadian Marxist theorist C.L.R. James’s notion of self-activity to suggest that the crisis in measurement is a symptom of the separation of work and value. The institution of forms of self-management and what might be called wars of command begin to replace the governmentality of the wage …

The Development Of Social And Cultural Geographies In Taiwan: Knowledge Production And Social Relevance, Hsin-Ling Wu, Sue-Ching Jou, Lily Kong Oct 2006

The Development Of Social And Cultural Geographies In Taiwan: Knowledge Production And Social Relevance, Hsin-Ling Wu, Sue-Ching Jou, Lily Kong

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Social and cultural geographies have long occupied a marginal position in Taiwan's scholarship in the humanities and social sciences. Despite the influence of the so-called ‘cultural turn’ that has characterized much of Anglo-American scholarship since the 1990s (Barnett 1998), Taiwan's scholarship in the social sciences in general and human geography more specifically has remained relatively untouched by these intellectual currents till very recent years. This paper seeks to examine the social, intellectual and institutional contexts that explain this marginalization, and consider the possibilities for social and cultural geographies' emergence from marginality in Taiwan in the future. This possibility is considered …

Discovering Image-Text Associations For Cross-Media Web Information Fusion, Tao Jiang, Ah-Hwee Tan Sep 2006

Discovering Image-Text Associations For Cross-Media Web Information Fusion, Tao Jiang, Ah-Hwee Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The diverse and distributed nature of the information published on the World Wide Web has made it difficult to collate and track information related to specific topics. Whereas most existing work on web information fusion has focused on multiple document summarization, this paper presents a novel approach for discovering associations between images and text segments, which subsequently can be used to support cross-media web content summarization. Specifically, we employ a similarity-based multilingual retrieval model and adopt a vague transformation technique for measuring the information similarity between visual features and textual features. The experimental results on a terrorist domain document set …

The second is the evaluation of cross-media image retrieval, i.e., combining text and visual contents for image retrieval. The last is the evaluation of bilingual image retrieval …

Knowledges Of The Creative Economy: Towards A Relational Geography Of Diffusion And Adaptation In Asia, Lily Kong, Chris Gibson, Louisa-May Khoo, Anne-Louise Semple Aug 2006

Knowledges Of The Creative Economy: Towards A Relational Geography Of Diffusion And Adaptation In Asia, Lily Kong, Chris Gibson, Louisa-May Khoo, Anne-Louise Semple

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Recent dialogues in geography and the social sciences have reminded researchers of the extent to which academic and policy knowledges are socially and spatially embedded-that is, they circulate through formal and informal systems of publishing, exchange, commodification and cultural influence. Academic and policy knowledges are, in short, very much a part of the creative economy. In light of this, our paper surveys knowledges of the creative economy itself, as reflected in a geography of industry reports and government policy statements in selected Asian countries. Using a post-positivist framework adapted from diffusion theory, we critically interpret the circulation, mutation and adaptation …

Richard Rorty And Moral Progress In Global Relations, Eduard Jordaan Aug 2006

Richard Rorty And Moral Progress In Global Relations, Eduard Jordaan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Richard Rorty's navigation of the pitfalls of the cosmopolitan-communitarian debate, concern with human suffering, recognition of the contingency of communal identities and relationships, and his endorsement of liberal societies, by definition inclusive and always in search of a greater justice, make it appear as though his thought can guide us towards greater concern for the world's poor. However, this article questions the progressive potential of Rorty's thought. Obstacles to such (global) moral progress include Rorty's unquestioned statism and his focus on internal outsiders who are suffering and/or oppressed, instead of external outsiders beyond national borders; his insistence on a public-private …

Understanding Intrinsic Factors Influencing Benefit Maximization Of Is Usage, Brenda Eschenbrenner, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah Aug 2006

Understanding Intrinsic Factors Influencing Benefit Maximization Of Is Usage, Brenda Eschenbrenner, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This research uses the Repertory Grid technique to understand intrinsic factors influencing benefit maximization of IS usage. The results show that domain-relevant skills, task motivation, cognitive/work style attributes, individual characteristics (identified as creativity traits) and personal characteristics (identified as innovativeness traits) influence benefit maximization of IS usage. The findings not only provide insights on ways to increase quality of IS usage in organizations but are also helpful for identifying approaches that foster attributes leading to increased benefit realization from IS usage.

'A Hundred Flowers Bloom': The Re-Emergence Of The Chinese Press In Post-Suharto Indonesia, Chang Yau Hoon Jul 2006

'A Hundred Flowers Bloom': The Re-Emergence Of The Chinese Press In Post-Suharto Indonesia, Chang Yau Hoon

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

During the whole 32 years of Suharto’s regime (1966–98), Chinese publications and the use of Chinese language in public were officially banned in Indonesia. As a result, printed matter in Chinese characters that entered Indonesia was classified as ‘prohibited imports’ (Heryanto 1999: 327). This prohibition came to an end after the fall of Suharto, as part of the process of democratization and Reformasi. The post-Suharto era of Reformasi is thus celebrated for the dramatic revival of the freedom of the press and media in Indonesia and many previously banned as well as new publications have emerged since Suharto’s fall. The …

Exploiting Domain Structure For Named Entity Recognition, Jing Jiang, Chengxiang Zhai Jun 2006

Exploiting Domain Structure For Named Entity Recognition, Jing Jiang, Chengxiang Zhai

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Named Entity Recognition (NER) is a fundamental task in text mining and natural language understanding. Current approaches to NER (mostly based on supervised learning) perform well on domains similar to the training domain, but they tend to adapt poorly to slightly different domains. We present several strategies for exploiting the domain structure in the training data to learn a more robust named entity recognizer that can perform well on a new domain. First, we propose a simple yet effective way to automatically rank features based on their generalizabilities across domains. We then train a classifier with strong emphasis on the …

A Spatial Analysis Of The Xiii Italian Legislature, Massimiliano Landi, Riccardo Pelizzo Jun 2006

A Spatial Analysis Of The Xiii Italian Legislature, Massimiliano Landi, Riccardo Pelizzo

Research Collection School Of Economics

We present a spatial map of the Italian House of Deputies during the XIII Legislature obtained by applying the Poole and Rosenthal methodology to roll call data. We estimate coordinates for almost all the 650 Deputies that were on the House’s floor at the time, and we aggregate them according to parties. We find that voting patters generate basically a two dimensional political space. The first dimension represents loyalty to either the ruling coalition or the opposing one. The second dimension is represented by the European Union. These findings are consistent with the exceptional case of the party Northern League, …

Assimilation, Multiculturalism, Hybridity: The Dilemmas Of Ethnic Chinese In Post-Suharto Indonesia, Chang Yau Hoon Jun 2006

Assimilation, Multiculturalism, Hybridity: The Dilemmas Of Ethnic Chinese In Post-Suharto Indonesia, Chang Yau Hoon

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The dominant discourse in accommodating the ethnic Chinese in Indonesia during Suharto's regime was one of assimilation, which forcefully aimed to absorb this minority into the national body. However, continuous official discrimination towards the Chinese placed them in a paradoxical position that made them an easy target of racial and class hostility. The May 1998 anti-Chinese riots proved the failure of the assmilationist policy. The process of democratization has given rise to a proliferation of identity politics in post-Suharto Indonesia. The policy of multiculturalism has been endorsed by Indonesia's current power holders as a preferred approach to rebuilding the nation, …

Mobile Mediation: How Technology Is Driving The Globalization Of Adr, Nadja Alexander Apr 2006

Mobile Mediation: How Technology Is Driving The Globalization Of Adr, Nadja Alexander

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

Mediation has made it to Hollywood. The opening scene of the romantic comedy, The Wedding Crashers (2005), features a hilarious attempt at divorce mediation. The mediation scene does not demonstrate any mediation skills to be emulated, and the film itself, apart from the opening scene, has nothing to do with mediation. Nevertheless one cannot ignore the power of the borderless dream machine called Hollywood. The Hollywood film industry does more than export films and fantasies around the world; it is a driving force in the globalization of the themes with which it deals. When mediation becomes one of those themes …

Regulation And Freedom In Global Business Education, Stefano Harney, Cliff Oswick Mar 2006

Regulation And Freedom In Global Business Education, Stefano Harney, Cliff Oswick

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Purpose: This paper seeks to confront the orthodoxy of global business education with some insights from postcolonial theory in order to develop a new critical pedagogy adequate for a global sociology of management and accounting. Design/methodology/approach: Reviewing the state of play in postcolonial theory and noting the new politicisation in that field, the paper asks what relevance this politicisation might have for an alternative to orthodox global business education. Findings: The paper finds that the texts available to postcolonial theory present a wealth beyond the regulation of colonial and neo‐colonial regimes and in contrast critical management studies do not have …

Affinities In The Socio-Political Thought Of Rorty And Levinas, Eduard Jordaan Mar 2006

Affinities In The Socio-Political Thought Of Rorty And Levinas, Eduard Jordaan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This article considers the affinities in the socio-political thought of Emmanuel Levinas and Richard Rorty. The writings of both display considerable concern for the suffering of others. Both authors note the importance of a self-critical subject becoming more aware of its own injustice as very important for recognizing our responsibilities to others. Furthermore, both stress the importance of recognizing the other outside of the usual, objectifying categories, since it is the uniqueness of the other that reminds us of our responsibility for the other. Both writers view the liberal state as the best political forum in which to realize a …

Moore's Paradoxes And Conscious Belief, John N. Williams Feb 2006

Moore's Paradoxes And Conscious Belief, John N. Williams

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

For Moore, it is a paradox that although I would be absurd in asserting that (it is raining but I don’t believe it is) or that (it is raining but I believe it isn’t), such assertions might be true. But I would be also absurd in judging that the contents of such assertions are true. I argue for the strategy of explaining the absurdity of Moorean assertion in terms of conscious Moorean belief. Only in this way may the pathology of Moorean absurdity be adequately explained in terms of self-contradiction. David Rosenthal disagrees with this strategy. Ironically, his higher-order thought …

Defining (Multiple) Selves: Reflections On Fieldwork In Jakarta, Chang Yau Hoon Jan 2006

Defining (Multiple) Selves: Reflections On Fieldwork In Jakarta, Chang Yau Hoon

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The 'Self' in late-modernity is never singular but multiplies across different discourses, practices and positions. It is constructed through difference. It is only through a relation to the 'Other' that the 'Self' can be defined. This paper endeavours to map the endless negotiations of my 'Self' as male Australian academic of Chinese descent, a Malaysian citizen, a Bruneian resident, and an Indonesian specialist, over a period of fieldwork in Jakarta in 2004. It discusses how I defined my multiple 'Selves' to different individuals and communities, how they in turn defined me, and how these constructions were always shifting. Depending on …

Culture And Counterfactuals: On The Importance Of Life Domains, Jing Chen, Chi-Yue Chiu, Neal J. Roese, Kim-Pong Tam, Ivy Yee-Man Lau Jan 2006

Culture And Counterfactuals: On The Importance Of Life Domains, Jing Chen, Chi-Yue Chiu, Neal J. Roese, Kim-Pong Tam, Ivy Yee-Man Lau

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Past research, with its emphasis on affective regulatory processes, has failed to find cross-cultural differences in counterfactual thoughts. In the current study, the authors examine the tendency to generate additive counterfactuals (those that focus on the addition of new aspects that were not in fact present) and subtractive counterfactuals (those that focus on subtraction of factual aspects) among Mainland Chinese and European American university students in five life domains: schoolwork, romantic relationships, family relationships, friendships, and life in general. As in previous studies, the authors find an overall main effect, in which additive counterfactuals predominate over subtractive counterfactuals within both …

Improving The Quality Of Conceptual Modeling Using Cognitive Mapping Techniques, Keng Siau, X. Tan Dec 2005

Improving The Quality Of Conceptual Modeling Using Cognitive Mapping Techniques, Keng Siau, X. Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Conceptual modeling involves the understanding and communication between system analysts and end-users. Many factors may affect the quality of conceptual modeling processes as well as the models per se. Human cognition plays a pivotal role in understanding these factors and cognitive mapping techniques are effective tools to elicit and represent human cognition. In this paper, we look at the use of cognitive mapping techniques to improve the quality of conceptual modeling. We review frameworks on quality in conceptual modeling and examine the role of human cognition in conceptual modeling. The paper also discusses how human cognition is related to quality …

A Grapheme To Phoneme Converter For Standard Malay, Haizhou Li, Mahani Aljunied, Boon Seong Teoh Dec 2005

A Grapheme To Phoneme Converter For Standard Malay, Haizhou Li, Mahani Aljunied, Boon Seong Teoh

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This paper describes the process of creating a grapheme-to-phoneme (G2P) converter for Standard Malay (SM). A fundamental step to building TTS and ASR engines, is to build a good G2P system that can automatically generate accurate phonemic representations for words. Our goal is to generate phonemes that reflect real speech, thereby facilitating more accurate phoneme alignment with actual waveforms (obtained from voice-data collection), keeping human intervention to the minimum. Here we discuss the key areas in SM that require considerable phonemic alterations including letter elisions, consonant insertions, multiple ways of uttering a letter/diagraph – areas that any good G2P system …

Review Of Unity Of Knowledge And Action: Toward A Nonrepresentational Theory Of Knowledge, Sor-Hoon Tan Dec 2005

Review Of Unity Of Knowledge And Action: Toward A Nonrepresentational Theory Of Knowledge, Sor-Hoon Tan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The title of this book is inspired by the Neo-Confucian scholar, Wang Yangming (1472-1529). However, the volume is not devoted solely to Wang Yangming's philosophy about the unity of knowledge and action. Wang is only one of several thinkers brought into this philosophical conversation and does not even receive the most attention (Richard Rorty has that honor). The conver- sation is interesting and occasionally illuminating, although one is not sure at the end whether it is moving toward one particular nonrepresentation theory of knowledge or whether the conversation partners who share an aversion to representational theories might disagree profoundly about …

Multiracialism Engineered: The Limits Of Electoral And Spatial Integration In Singapore, Eugene K. B. Tan Nov 2005

Multiracialism Engineered: The Limits Of Electoral And Spatial Integration In Singapore, Eugene K. B. Tan

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

This paper examines Singapore's innovations in electoral and spatial integration. In examining the Group Representation Constituency and the Ethnic Integration Policy, a critique is made of the official discourse that multiracialism is internalized and entrenched in Singapore's political psyche and electoral process. While the electoral and spatial integration policies are driven by the objective of enhancing multiracialism, their actual workings do not adequately advance the development of norms and values that would be truly supportive of the need for a multiracial legislature and an abiding commitment to multiracialism. The layering of the electoral system with other political objectives, such as …

Mining Ontological Knowledge From Domain-Specific Text Documents, Xing Jiang, Ah-Hwee Tan Nov 2005

Mining Ontological Knowledge From Domain-Specific Text Documents, Xing Jiang, Ah-Hwee Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Traditional text mining systems employ shallow parsing techniques and focus on concept extraction and taxonomic relation extraction. This paper presents a novel system called CRCTOL for mining rich semantic knowledge in the form of ontology from domain-specific text documents. By using a full text parsing technique and incorporating both statistical and lexico-syntactic methods, the knowledge extracted by our system is more concise and contains a richer semantics compared with alternative systems. We conduct a case study wherein CRCTOL extracts ontological knowledge, specifically key concepts and semantic relations, from a terrorism domain text collection. Quantitative evaluation, by comparing with a state-of-the-art …

Nil Is Not Nothing: Recognition Of Chinese Network Informal Language Expressions, Yunqing Xia, Wong, Wei Gao, Wei Gao Oct 2005

Nil Is Not Nothing: Recognition Of Chinese Network Informal Language Expressions, Yunqing Xia, Wong, Wei Gao, Wei Gao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Informal language is actively used in network-mediated communication, e.g. chat room, BBS, email and text message. We refer the anomalous terms used in such context as network informal language (NIL) expressions. For example, “偶(ou3)” is used to replace “我(wo3)” in Chinese ICQ. Without unconventional resource, knowledge and techniques, the existing natural language processing approaches exhibit less effectiveness in dealing with NIL text. We propose to study NIL expressions with a NIL corpus and investigate techniques in processing NIL expressions. Two methods for Chinese NIL expression recognition are designed in NILER system. The experimental results show that pattern matching method produces …

Imagining Confucius: Paradigmatic Character And Virtue Ethics, Sor-Hoon Tan Sep 2005

Imagining Confucius: Paradigmatic Character And Virtue Ethics, Sor-Hoon Tan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

In the Analects, discussions of how someone should act or had actedare accompanied by some assessment of that person’s character, someconclusion as to his having or lacking what are traditionally understoodas Confucian virtues—ren (benevolence or humanity), yi (appropriatenessor rightness, or even righteousness), li (rites, rituals, or ritualpropriety), zhi (wisdom), xin (trustworthiness), and yong (courage).1Scholars have different views as to how and to what extent Confucianvirtues are comparable with virtues in Western ethics like Aristotle’s.2The Analects is as preoccupied with the exemplary person (junzi) andhis virtues as the Nicomachean Ethics is concerned with elucidating thevirtues via portraits of the virtuous man. …

A Semiotics View Of Modeling Method Complexity – The Case Of Uml, Keng Siau, Y. Tian Aug 2005

A Semiotics View Of Modeling Method Complexity – The Case Of Uml, Keng Siau, Y. Tian

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Unified Modeling Language (UML) is the standard modeling language for object oriented system development. Despite its status as a standard, UML’s formal specification is fuzzy and its theoretical foundation is weak. Semiotics, the study of signs, provides us good theoretical foundation for UML research as UML graphical notations are some kinds of signs. In this research, we use semiotics to study the graphical notations in UML. We hypothesized that using iconic signs as UML graphical notations leads to more accurate representation and arouses fewer connotations than using symbolic signs. Since symbolic signs involve more learning efforts, we assume that expert …

The 2004 Global Labour Survey: Working Institution And Practices Around The World, Davin Chor, Richard B. Freeman

Research Collection School Of Economics

The 2004 Global Labor Survey (GLS) is an Internet-based survey that seeks to measure de facto labor practices in countries around the world, covering issues such as freedom of association, the regulation of work contracts, employee benefits and the prevalence of collective bargaining. To find out about de facto practices, the GLS invited labor practitioners, ranging from union officials and activists to professors of labor law and industrial relations, to report on conditions in their country. Over 1,500 persons responded, which allowed us to create indices of practices in ten broad areas for 33 countries. The GLS' focus on de …

Estimating Party Policy Positions: Japan In Comparative Context, Michael Laver, Kenneth Benoit Aug 2005

Estimating Party Policy Positions: Japan In Comparative Context, Michael Laver, Kenneth Benoit

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This paper first reviews a number of epistemological and methodological issues relating to the estimation of party policy positions, particularly in a comparative context, with special reference to the methodology of ‘expert surveys’. It is argued that expert surveys, as systematic summaries of the views of country specialists, have a particular role in assessing the content validity of other types of estimates of party policy positions. The paper moves on to analyze the positions of Japanese political parties in a comparative context, using results from a new 47-country expert survey. Attention is paid both to the substantive policy content of …
