Romance And Sexual Initiation Among Unmarried Young People In Vietnam: A Multi-Method Approach, Bussarawan Teerawichitchainan Mar 2007

Romance And Sexual Initiation Among Unmarried Young People In Vietnam: A Multi-Method Approach, Bussarawan Teerawichitchainan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Young men represent the highest proportion of sexually experienced unmarried population in Vietnam. Increasing levels of sexual activity, combined with reported low levels of knowledge about sex, HIV/AIDS, and STIs and an aversion to using contraceptives, suggest that they are ill-prepared to deal with Vietnam's emerging HIV epidemic. This study uses a multi-method approach to assess sexual activity and attitudes concerning romantic love among never-married men. I analyze the nationally representative Survey Assessment of Vietnamese Youth to examine patterns of emotional relationships and physical behaviors preceding young men's sexual initiation as well as determinants of premarital sex and an aversion …

E-learning often involves exploration of the information space that is somewhat similar to the exploration of space in the real world. Initial paths taken in any environment (be it a physical, virtual, or any other type) will not only guide the discoveries of what the environment contains, but also formulate the underlying organising principles. The suggested route in an art gallery frequently presents artworks that are either chronological or conceptually tied together. Deviating from this –and taking a route of our own, if at all possible– might be either confusing or insightful. The structure of the information, and the control …

Asian Currency Baskets: A Useful Surveillance Tool?, Charles Adams, Hwee Kwan Chow Mar 2007

Asian Currency Baskets: A Useful Surveillance Tool?, Charles Adams, Hwee Kwan Chow

Research Collection School Of Economics

This paper considers whether an intra-regional currency basket and the associated divergence indicators could play a useful role in official exchange rate surveillance. Recently, proponents of an Asian currency basket have referred to the role the European Currency Unit played in constructing exchange rate divergence indicators as evidence of the usefulness of intra-regional currency baskets for exchange rate monitoring. The paper shows that such indicators have a number of features that can lead to them obscuring underlying changes in exchange rates and that the signals they emit will often be difficult to interpret. In addition, the use of regional currency …

Trade Agreements With Domestic Policies As Disguised Protection, Gea Myoung Lee Mar 2007

Trade Agreements With Domestic Policies As Disguised Protection, Gea Myoung Lee

Research Collection School Of Economics

WTO rules prohibit “disguised protection” in the form of domestic policies. How then do governments cooperate over trade and domestic policies when none can verify whether a nation's domestic tax reduction is a protective measure or a reaction to a production externality? In this paper, each government privately observes whether a production externality associated with its import-competing good is high or low. This paper finds that in an optimal agreement, disguised protection with domestic policies is never used by governments with a high externality, and is never commonly realized. Moreover, in an optimal agreement, tariffs may be conditional on domestic …

Bias In Dynamic Panel Estimation With Fixed Effects, Incidental Trends And Cross Section Dependence, Peter C. B. Phillips, Donggyu Sul Mar 2007

Bias In Dynamic Panel Estimation With Fixed Effects, Incidental Trends And Cross Section Dependence, Peter C. B. Phillips, Donggyu Sul

Research Collection School Of Economics

Explicit asymptotic bias formulae are given for dynamic panel regression estimators as the cross section sample size N --> ∞. The results extend earlier work by Nickell [1981. Biases in dynamic models with fixed effects. Econometrica 49, 1417-1426] and later authors in several directions that are relevant for practical work, including models with unit roots, deterministic trends, predetermined and exogenous regressors, and errors that may be cross sectionally dependent. The asymptotic bias is found to be so large when incidental linear trends are fitted and the time series sample size is small that it changes the sign of the autoregressive …

Long Run Variance Estimation And Robust Regression Testing Using Sharp Origin Kernels With No Truncation, Peter C. B. Phillips, Yixiao Sun, Sainan Jin Mar 2007

Long Run Variance Estimation And Robust Regression Testing Using Sharp Origin Kernels With No Truncation, Peter C. B. Phillips, Yixiao Sun, Sainan Jin

Research Collection School Of Economics

A new family of kernels is suggested for use in long run variance (LRV) estimation and robust regression testing. The kernels are constructed by taking powers of the Bartlett kernel and are intended to be used with no truncation (or bandwidth) parameter. As the power parameter ([rho]) increases, the kernels become very sharp at the origin and increasingly downweight values away from the origin, thereby achieving effects similar to a bandwidth parameter. Sharp origin kernels can be used in regression testing in much the same way as conventional kernels with no truncation, as suggested in the work of Kiefer and …

Cyber-Trespass And 'Unauthorized Access' As Legal Mechanisms Of Access Control: Lessons From The Us Experience, Mary W. S. Wong Mar 2007

Cyber-Trespass And 'Unauthorized Access' As Legal Mechanisms Of Access Control: Lessons From The Us Experience, Mary W. S. Wong

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

The common law doctrine of trespass to chattels has recently been revived and applied by courts in the United States (US) to cover intrusions (in the form of electronic signals) to computer systems connected to the Internet. These cases represent judicial recognition of the need to protect certain unwanted intrusions in cyberspace, though the principles developed therewith are remarkably expansive. As such, they overlap with the concept of ‘unauthorized access’ under computer misuse legislation in the US and elsewhere. This overlap has yet to be judicially acknowledged. Since the US, the United Kingdom and other common law countries not only …

Organizational Identity And Employer Image: Towards A Unifying Framework, Filip Lievens, Greet Van Hoye, Frederik Anseel Mar 2007

Organizational Identity And Employer Image: Towards A Unifying Framework, Filip Lievens, Greet Van Hoye, Frederik Anseel

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This study aims to bridge two research streams that have evolved relatively apart from each other, namely the research streams on organizational identity and on employer branding (employer image). In particular, we posit that it is crucial to examine which factors company outsiders (applicants) as well as company insiders (employees) associate with a given employer. To this end, this study uses the instrumental-symbolic framework to study factors relating to both employer image and organizational identity of the Belgian Army. Two samples are used: a sample of 258 Army applicants and a sample of 179 military employees. Results show that both …

Emerging International Criminal Justice, Mark Findlay, Clare Mclean Mar 2007

Emerging International Criminal Justice, Mark Findlay, Clare Mclean

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

International criminal justice is sufficiently well established to merit an overview of its origins and institutional development. This paper starts out by identifying the institutional indicia of international criminal justice and their close connection to the development of international human rights protections. Underlying these structural and process signposts is some controversy regarding their motivations. Has formal international criminal justice emerged in response to novel and genuine concerns for the safety of humanity, or is it a manifestation of global governance priorities in post conflict scenarios, regional and international?

Privacy-Preserving Credentials Upon Trusted Computing Augmented Servers, Yanjiang Yang, Robert H. Deng, Feng Bao Mar 2007

Privacy-Preserving Credentials Upon Trusted Computing Augmented Servers, Yanjiang Yang, Robert H. Deng, Feng Bao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Credentials are an indispensable means for service access control in electronic commerce. However, regular credentials such as X.509 certificates and SPKI/SDSI certificates do not address user privacy at all, while anonymous credentials that protect user privacy are complex and have compatibility problems with existing PKIs. In this paper we propose privacy-preserving credentials, a concept between regular credentials and anonymous credentials. The privacy-preserving credentials enjoy the advantageous features of both regular credentials and anonymous credentials, and strike a balance between user anonymity and system complexity. We achieve this by employing computer servers equipped with TPMs (Trusted Platform Modules). We present a …

Tube (Text-Cube) For Discovering Documentary Evidence Of Associations Among Entities, Hady Lauw, Ee Peng Lim, Hwee Hwa Pang Mar 2007

Tube (Text-Cube) For Discovering Documentary Evidence Of Associations Among Entities, Hady Lauw, Ee Peng Lim, Hwee Hwa Pang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

User-driven discovery of associations among entities, and documents that provide evidence for these associations, is an important search task conducted by researchers and do-main information specialists. Entities here refer to real or abstract objects such as people, organizations, ideologies, etc. Associations are the inter-relationships among entities. Most current works in query-driven document retrieval and finding representative subgraphs are ill-suited for the task as they lack an awareness of entity types as well as an intuitive representation of associations. We propose the TUBE model, a text cube approach for discovering associations and documentary evidence of these associations. The model consists of …

A Comparison Of Cross Training Policies In Different Job Shops, Kum Khiong Yang Mar 2007

A Comparison Of Cross Training Policies In Different Job Shops, Kum Khiong Yang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This research compares a set of cross-training policies represented by different numbers of cross-trained workers, additional skills per cross-trained worker, and additional machines. The policies are evaluated in job shops, represented by different efficiency losses, labour utilization, variability in processing times, and worker absenteeism. Our results show that adding one machine in each department and cross-training one or two workers from each department with one additional skill is generally sufficient to realize most of the benefits of cross-training. Cross-training is thus beneficial in most job shops, unless the cost of the minimal training and spare machines is high. Our results …

Investing In Hedge Funds When Returns Are Predictable, Doron Avramov, Robert Kosowski, Narayan Y. Naik, Melvyn Teo Feb 2007

Investing In Hedge Funds When Returns Are Predictable, Doron Avramov, Robert Kosowski, Narayan Y. Naik, Melvyn Teo

Research Collection BNP Paribas Hedge Fund Centre

This paper evaluates hedge fund performance through portfolio strategies that incorporate predictability in managerial skills, fund risk loadings, and benchmark returns. Incorporating predictability substantially improves performance for the entire universe of hedge funds as well as for various investment styles. The outperformance is strongest during market downturns when the marginal utility of consumption is relatively high. Moreover, the major source of investment profitability is predictability in managerial skills. In particular, long-only strategies that incorporate predictability in managerial skills outperform their Fung and Hsieh (2004) benchmarks by over 17 percent per year. The economic value of predictability obtains for different rebalancing …

Foreign Funds Spy Hidden Bounties In Indian Distressed Assets, Knowledge@Smu Feb 2007

Foreign Funds Spy Hidden Bounties In Indian Distressed Assets, Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

Foreign funds are garnering a sizable presence in India's nascent market for distressed assets, which is currently estimated between $45 billion and $55 billion. India's economic boom offers pockets of opportunity for investors to buy underperforming assets such as cement and sugar plants, revive them with fresh capital or liquidate them to profit handsomely. A big driver for this growing market is the government's move to purge the financial system of sick assets accumulated over decades, but obstacles include the absence of a developed corporate debt market, limits on foreign investments and procedural bottlenecks. India Knowledge@Wharton spoke to key participants …

Mike Mccue's Vision For The Convergence Of The Phone And The Web, Knowledge@Smu Feb 2007

Mike Mccue's Vision For The Convergence Of The Phone And The Web, Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

When Mike McCue founded Tellme in 1999, its initial product was a voice-driven information service, what might be termed a "voice portal." Today, the company's voice-recognition systems power directory assistance services from AT&T, Verizon and Cingular along with automated 800-number customer help lines at companies like Merrill Lynch and Federal Express. But McCue still harbors dreams of a broader voice-driven web, one which will provide consumers with new ways of using the phone to interact with the universe of information. He discussed this vision, and others, during a recent interview with Knowledge@Wharton in Tellme's Mountain View, Calif., offices.

It's Not Easy Going Green: Environmentalism May Help Your Corporate Image, But Will It Keep You In The Black?, Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

On February 2, a long-awaited report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) was released citing "unequivocal" proof of global warming. Meanwhile, some of the biggest corporations in the world, including Wal-Mart, Ford, General Electric and BP, have adopted highly visible "green" strategies. But what does "going green" mean for the bottom line? Whether motivated by desire to do what is right, or to polish their public image and fend off government regulation, companies can profit from environmental initiatives, according to Wharton faculty and analysts.

Sustaining Corporate Growth Requires 'Big I' And 'Small I' Innovation, Knowledge@Smu Feb 2007

Sustaining Corporate Growth Requires 'Big I' And 'Small I' Innovation, Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

All companies, from major multinationals to start-ups, face a common challenge: how to keep growing. These firms find it difficult to sustain growth because they become risk averse, opting for safer incremental product and service improvements instead of more rewarding, but riskier, major initiatives, according to a study by Wharton marketing professor George S. Day. Companies, Day says, need to better understand the risks inherent in different levels of innovation and achieve a balance between BIG I innovation and small i innovation.

India In The Global Supply Chain: Can Domestic Demand And Technology Skills Help It Catch Up?, Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

Hampered by poor infrastructure, bureaucratic red tape and restrictive labor laws, Indian manufacturing has failed to make its presence felt globally. But that is rapidly changing, say experts from Boston Consulting Group and Wharton. More and more multinationals are setting up manufacturing operations in India, attracted by India's burgeoning domestic market and its relatively low-cost, highly skilled workforce.

Why Software Business Models Of The Future Probably Won't Come In A Box, Knowledge@Smu Feb 2007

Why Software Business Models Of The Future Probably Won't Come In A Box, Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

Microsoft's Vista operating system should give the company a revenue stream that will run for years, but experts at Wharton say the January 30 launch of the consumer versions of Microsoft's flagship software may be among the last of its kind -- a product sold for a flat fee in a shrink-wrapped box. Indeed, many wonder if the software business model that has made Microsoft so dominant may begin to fade as new software business models -- from open source to advertising supported -- gain increasing traction.

Make Room, Wikipedia: Internet-Based Collaboration Could Change The Way We Do Business, Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

It sounds like something from a futuristic TV thriller: American spies thwarting a terrorist plot through a shared online community modeled after Wikipedia, the free user-created, web-based encyclopedia. But Anthony D. Williams, co-author of the new book, Wikinomics: How Mass Collaboration Changes Everything, recently told a conference at Wharton's Mack Center for Technological Innovation that this online community of spies already exists -- along with a host of other activist-oriented web sites that are changing the rules of the global economy.

Why Hedge Funds Are Looking To India For Greater Upside Potential, Knowledge@Smu Feb 2007

Why Hedge Funds Are Looking To India For Greater Upside Potential, Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

A few years ago, hedge funds were barely on the radar screen in the Indian marketplace, and they were highly secretive investment vehicles even in the U.S. Today, it's a different story. As big returns are no longer easy to come by in domestic markets, international hedge funds are increasingly looking to countries like India and evaluating investment opportunities and the potential gains to be made. To understand what factors affect their success, India Knowledge@Wharton talked to experts from Wharton and elsewhere about the attractiveness -- as well as the risks -- of the Indian marketplace for hedge funds.

From 2001 to 2006, Edward Luce served as South Asia bureau chief for the Financial Times; he currently serves as that paper's Washington bureau chief. In addition, he is married to an Indian woman. Given this background, it comes as no surprise that Luce has chosen to write a book about India. His aim, he states in the introduction to In Spite of the Gods: The Strange Rise of Modern India, "is to provide an unsentimental evaluation of contemporary India against the backdrop of its widely expected ascent to great power status in the twenty-first century."

On Stiffness In Affine Asset Pricing Models, Shirley Junying Huang, Jun Yu Feb 2007

On Stiffness In Affine Asset Pricing Models, Shirley Junying Huang, Jun Yu

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Economic and econometric analysis of continuous-time affine asset pricing models often necessitates solving systems of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) numerically. Explicit RungeûKutta (ERK) methods have been suggested to solve these ODEs both in the theoretical finance literature and in the financial econometrics literature. In this paper we show that under many empirically relevant circumstances the ODEs involve stiffness, a phenomenon which leads to some practical difficulties for numerical methods with a finite region of absolute stability, including the whole class of ERK methods. The difficulties are highlighted in the present paper in the context of pricing zero-coupon bonds as well …

Mining Generalized Associations Of Semantic Relations From Textual Web Content, Tao Jiang, Ah-Hwee Tan, We Wang Feb 2007

Mining Generalized Associations Of Semantic Relations From Textual Web Content, Tao Jiang, Ah-Hwee Tan, We Wang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Traditional text mining techniques transform free text into flat bags of words representation, which does not preserve sufficient semantics for the purpose of knowledge discovery. In this paper, we present a two-step procedure to mine generalized associations of semantic relations conveyed by the textual content of Web documents. First, RDF (resource description framework) metadata representing semantic relations are extracted from raw text using a myriad of natural language processing techniques. The relation extraction process also creates a term taxonomy in the form of a sense hierarchy inferred from WordNet. Then, a novel generalized association pattern mining algorithm (GP-Close) is applied …

Logistics Network Design With Supplier Consolidation Hubs And Multiple Shipment Options, Michelle L. F. Cheong, Rohit Bhatnagar, Stephen C. Graves Feb 2007

Logistics Network Design With Supplier Consolidation Hubs And Multiple Shipment Options, Michelle L. F. Cheong, Rohit Bhatnagar, Stephen C. Graves

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

An important service provided by third-party logistics (3PL) firms is to manage the inbound logistics of raw materials and components from multiple suppliers to several manufacturing plants. A key challenge for these 3PL firms is to determine how to coordinate and consolidate the transportation flow, so as to get the best overall logistics performance. One tactic is to establish consolidation hubs that collect shipments from several suppliers, consolidate these shipments, and direct the consolidated shipments to the appropriate manufacturing plant. We consider the network design problem to implement this tactic, namely deciding the number, location and operation of consolidation hubs …

Clustering And Combinatorial Optimization In Recursive Supervised Learning, Kiruthika Ramanathan, Sheng Uei Guan Feb 2007

Clustering And Combinatorial Optimization In Recursive Supervised Learning, Kiruthika Ramanathan, Sheng Uei Guan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The use of combinations of weak learners to learn a dataset has been shown to be better than the use of a single strong learner. In fact, the idea is so successful that boosting, an algorithm combining several weak learners for supervised learning, has been considered to be the best off the shelf classifier. However, some problems still exist, including determining the optimal number of weak learners and the over fitting of data. In an earlier work, we developed the RPHP algorithm which solves both these problems by using a combination of global search, weak learning and pattern distribution. In …

Quality Of Service Routing Strategy Using Supervised Genetic Algorithm, Zhaoxia Wang, Yugeng Sun, Zhiyong Wang, Huayu Shen Feb 2007

Quality Of Service Routing Strategy Using Supervised Genetic Algorithm, Zhaoxia Wang, Yugeng Sun, Zhiyong Wang, Huayu Shen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A supervised genetic algorithm (SGA) is proposed to solve the quality of service (QoS) routing problems in computer networks. The supervised rules of intelligent concept are introduced into genetic algorithms (GAs) to solve the constraint optimization problem. One of the main characteristics of SGA is its searching space can be limited in feasible regions rather than infeasible regions. The superiority of SGA to other GAs lies in that some supervised search rules in which the information comes from the problems are incorporated into SGA. The simulation results show that SGA improves the ability of searching an optimum solution and accelerates …

Lecture Video Enhancement And Editing By Integrating Posture, Gesture, And Text, Feng Wang, Chong-Wah Ngo, Ting-Chuen Pong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper describes a novel framework for automatic lecture video editing by gesture, posture, and video text recognition. In content analysis, the trajectory of hand movement is tracked and the intentional gestures are automatically extracted for recognition. In addition, head pose is estimated through overcoming the difficulties due to the complex lighting conditions in classrooms. The aim of recognition is to characterize the flow of lecturing with a series of regional focuses depicted by human postures and gestures. The regions of interest (ROIs) in videos are semantically structured with text recognition and the aid of external documents. By tracing the …

Marketing The Chinese Dream Home: Gated Communities And Representations Of The Good Life In (Post-)Socialist Shanghai, Choon-Piew Pow, Lily Kong

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This paper examines the advertising themes and rhetoric that have been assembled in the place-marketing of Shanghai's newly built gated communities. We demonstrate how place-marketing strategies, in this case selling the Chinese dream home, draws upon specific landscape meanings and values that are embedded in Chinese/ Shanghainese history, even as symbolic and cultural capital from the contemporary scene also exert their influences. Collectively, these representations of the good life both reflect and reinforce the exclusivist housing aspirations and privatist visions of middle-class residents of gated communities in contemporary Shanghai. While advertisements do not always achieve the outcomes that property developers …

A Novel Intra-Cavity Lens Design For Compact High Efficiency Tapered Laser Diodes, F. K. Lau, Chyng Wen Tee, R. V. Penty, I. H. White, N. Michel, M. Krakowski

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

An integrated parabolic lens capable of introducing a diverging effect to the optical mode propagating within the cavity of a tapered laser is proposed and demonstrated. This idea allows broader high-power beams to be generated by shorter cavities. Diverging lenses with etch depths of 0.13 and 0.27 mum are implemented, with 12 (9.5%) and 16.8 mum (13.3%) overall broadening of the near-fields widths measured at 1/e2 intensity. The peak output power as well as the threshold current is found to increase following the lens etching process, confirming the beneficial broadening effect introduced by the diverging lens.
