Tort Liability In A Pandemic Environment: Exploratory Thoughts, Kee Yang Low
Tort Liability In A Pandemic Environment: Exploratory Thoughts, Kee Yang Low
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
In a matter of months, the emergence and spread of the coronavirus has massively disrupted and radically changed life, causing untold suffering and staggering losses. It will be some time before the pandemic ends and the world returns to normal or, more likely, move to a new normal. Since the beginning of 2020, health authorities and governments worldwide have devoted huge amounts of resources studying the science surrounding the coronavirus – its origin, spread, mutation, symptoms, treatment, containment and the like – and taking regulatory action to manage the crisis. The outbreak of the virus and the attendant governmental measures …

Truth Discovery (TD) is to infer truthful information by estimating the reliability of users in crowdsensing systems. To protect data privacy, many Privacy-Preserving Truth Discovery (PPTD) approaches have been proposed. However, all existing PPTD solutions do not consider a fundamental issue of trust. That is, if the data aggregator (e.g., the cloud server) is not trustworthy, how can an entity be convinced that the data aggregator has correctly performed the PPTD? A "lazy"cloud server may partially follow the deployed protocols to save its computing and communication resources, or worse, maliciously forge the results for some shady deals. In this paper, …

Traffic congestion reduces productivity of individuals by increasing time spent in traffic and also increases pollution. To reduce traffic congestion by better handling dynamic traffic patterns, recent work has focused on online traffic signal control. Typically, the objective in traffic signal control is to minimize expected delay over all vehicles given the uncertainty associated with the vehicle turn movements at intersections. In order to ensure responsiveness in decision making, a typical approach is to compute a schedule that minimizes the delay for the expected scenario of vehicle movements instead of minimizing expected delay over the feasible vehicle movement scenarios. Such …

The threats faced by cyber-physical systems (CPSs) in critical infrastructure have motivated the development of different attack detection mechanisms, such as those that monitor for violations of invariants, i.e. properties that always hold in normal operation. Given the complexity of CPSs, several existing approaches focus on deriving invariants automatically from data logs, but these can miss possible system behaviours if they are not represented in that data. Furthermore, resolving any design flaws identified in this process is costly, as the CPS is already built. In this position paper, we propose a systematic method for deriving invariants before a CPS is …

Understanding individual’s exercise motives, participation patterns in a gym and reasons for dropout are essential for designing strategies to help gym-goers with long-term exercise adherence. In this work, we derive insights on various exercise-related behaviors of gymgoers, including evidence of a significant number of individuals exhibiting early dropout and also describing their attitudes towards digital technologies for sustained gym participation. By utilizing gym visitation data logs of 6513 individuals over a longitudinal period of 16 months in a campus gym, we show the retention and dropout rates of gym-goers. Our data indicates that 32% of the people quit their gym …

One of the most frequently-used phrases at business events these days is “the future of work.” It’s increasingly clear that artificial intelligence and other new technologies will bring substantial changes in work tasks and business processes. But while these changes are predicted for the future, they’re already present in many organizations for many different jobs. The job and incumbents described below are an example of this phenomenon. Steve Miller of Singapore Management University and I co-authored the story.

Automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems are ubiquitous parts of modern life. It can be found in our smartphones, desktops, and smart home systems. To ensure its correctness in recognizing speeches, ASR needs to be tested. Testing ASR requires test cases in the form of audio files and their transcribed texts. Building these test cases manually, however, is tedious and time-consuming.To deal with the aforementioned challenge, in this work, we propose CrossASR, an approach that capitalizes the existing Text-To-Speech (TTS) systems to automatically generate test cases for ASR systems. CrossASR is a differential testing solution that compares outputs of multiple ASR …

Clinical decision support systems have the potential to improve work flows of experts in practice (e.g. therapist's evidence-based rehabilitation assessment). However, the adoption of these systems is challenging, and the gains of these systems have not fully demonstrated yet. In this paper, we identified the needs of therapists to assess patient's functional abilities (e.g. alternative perspectives with quantitative information on patient's exercise motions). As a result, we co-designed and developed an intelligent decision support system that automatically identifies salient features of assessment using reinforcement learning to assess the quality of motion and generate patient-specific analysis. We evaluated this system with …

The Other China Model: Daoism, Pluralism, And Political Liberalism, Devin K. Joshi
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
While scholars often portray Chinese political thought and tradition as standing in opposition to Western notions of political liberalism, little consideration has been given to compatibility between liberalism and Daoism, a prominent religion and long-standing alternative school of thought among Chinese peoples. Addressing this gap in the literature, this study in comparative political thought compares Laozi’s Dao De Jing with John Stuart Mill’s On Liberty to illustrate certain core political ideas in the Dao De Jing and their treatment in Mill’s landmark text on political liberalism. Although the two texts diverge in terms of advocacy of popular representation, public contestation, …

Interim Rationalizable Implementation Of Functions, Takashi Kunimoto, Rene Saran, Roberto Serrano
Research Collection School Of Economics
This paper investigates rationalizable implementation of social choice functions (SCFs) in incomplete information environments. We identify weak interim rationalizable monotonicity (weak IRM) as a novel condition and show that weak IRM is a necessary and almost sufficient condition for rationalizable implementation. We show by means of an example that interim rationalizable monotonicity (IRM), found in the literature, is strictly stronger than weak IRM as its name suggests, and that IRM is not necessary for rationalizable implementation, as had been previously claimed. The same example also demonstrates that Bayesian monotonicity, the key condition for full Bayesian implementation, is not necessary for …

Does Early Access To Pension Wealth Improve Health?, Seonghoon Kim, Kanghyock Koh
Research Collection School Of Economics
We examine the health impacts of early access to public pension wealth by exploiting a unique policy in Singapore allowing individuals to withdraw a proportion of their pension savings after their 55th birthday. For the identification, we employ a regression discontinuity design by comparing individuals before and after their 55th birthday. To address anticipated and lagged health impacts, we adopt the donut regression discontinuity approach. Using nationally representative monthly panel data, we find that early access to pension wealth improves self‐reported overall health.
Forecasting Large Covariance Matrix With High-Frequency Data: A Factor Approach For The Correlation Matrix, Yingjie Dong, Yiu Kuen Tse
Forecasting Large Covariance Matrix With High-Frequency Data: A Factor Approach For The Correlation Matrix, Yingjie Dong, Yiu Kuen Tse
Research Collection School Of Economics
We apply the factor approach to the correlation matrix to forecast large covariance matrix of asset returns using high-frequency data, using the principal component method to model the underlying latent factors of the correlation matrix. The realized variances are separately forecasted using the Heterogeneous Autoregressive model. The forecasted variances and correlations are then combined to forecast large covariance matrix. Our proposed method is found to perform better in reporting smaller forecast errors than some selected competitors. Empirical application to a portfolio of 100 NYSE and NASDAQ stocks shows that our method provides lower out-of-sample realized variance in selecting global minimum …

Zoomwalls: Dynamic Walls That Simulate Haptic Infrastructure For Room-Scale Vr World, Yan Yixian, Kazuki Takashima, Anthony Tang, Takayuki Tanno, Kazuyuki Fujita, Yoshifumi Kitamura
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We focus on the problem of simulating the haptic infrastructure of a virtual environment (i.e. walls, doors). Our approach relies on multiple ZoomWalls---autonomous robotic encounter-type haptic wall-shaped props---that coordinate to provide haptic feedback for room-scale virtual reality. Based on a user's movement through the physical space, ZoomWall props are coordinated through a predict-and-dispatch architecture to provide just-in-time haptic feedback for objects the user is about to touch. To refine our system, we conducted simulation studies of different prediction algorithms, which helped us to refine our algorithmic approach to realize the physical ZoomWall prototype. Finally, we evaluated our system through a …

This article critically examines the recent Court of Appeal decision in I-Admin (Singapore) Pte Ltd v Hong Ying Ting [2020] 1 SLR 1130 and its implications for the law of confidence. The article begins by setting out the decision at first instance, and then on appeal. It argues that the Court of Appeal’s “modified approach” fails to meaningfully engage the plaintiff ’s wrongful gain interest and places the law’s emphasis primarily, if not wholly, on the plaintiff ’s wrongful loss interest. The new framework also appears to have been influenced by English jurisprudence, which has had a long but unhelpful …

Us-China Trade War: A Way Out?, Weihuan Zhou, Henry Gao
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
Recently, a group of eminent Chinese/US economists and legal scholars issued a thought-provoking Joint Statement on ‘US–China Trade Relations: A Way Forward’. However, the Joint Statement does not provide practical solutions to the real issues in the bilateral negotiations. Moreover, by granting excessive policy space to the two largest trading nations, it would encourage them to further deviate from WTO rules and undermine the multilateral trading system. Drawing on the Theory of Distortions and Welfare, we put forward an alternative framework for the parties to tackle protectionist and trade distortive policy instruments while leaving sufficient policy space for them to …

Meta-Rcnn: Meta Learning For Few-Shot Object Detection, Xiongwei Wu, Doyen Sahoo, Steven Hoi
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Despite significant advances in deep learning based object detection in recent years, training effective detectors in a small data regime remains an open challenge. This is very important since labelling training data for object detection is often very expensive and time-consuming. In this paper, we investigate the problem of few-shot object detection, where a detector has access to only limited amounts of annotated data. Based on the meta-learning principle, we propose a new meta-learning framework for object detection named "Meta-RCNN", which learns the ability to perform few-shot detection via meta-learning. Specifically, Meta-RCNN learns an object detector in an episodic learning …

Cartoon is highly abstracted with clear edges, which makes it unique from the other art forms. In this paper, we focus on the essential cartoon factors of abstraction and edges, aiming to cartoonize real-world photographs like an artist. To this end, we propose a two-stage network, each stage explicitly targets at producing abstracted shading and crisp edges respectively. In the first abstraction stage, we propose a novel unsupervised bilateral flattening loss, which allows generating high-quality smoothing results in a label-free manner. Together with two other semantic-aware losses, the abstraction stage imposes different forms of regularization for creating cartoon-like flattened images. …

What Is The Vocabulary Of Flaky Tests?, Gustavo Pinto, Breno Miranda, Supun Dissanayake, Marcelo D'Amorim, Christoph Treude, Antonia Bertolino
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Flaky tests are tests whose outcomes are non-deterministic. Despite the recent research activity on this topic, no effort has been made on understanding the vocabulary of flaky tests. This work proposes to automatically classify tests as flaky or not based on their vocabulary. Static classification of flaky tests is important, for example, to detect the introduction of flaky tests and to search for flaky tests after they are introduced in regression test suites. We evaluated performance of various machine learning algorithms to solve this problem. We constructed a data set of flaky and non-flaky tests by running every test case, …

Understanding food recipe requires anticipating the implicit causal effects of cooking actions, such that the recipe can be converted into a graph describing the temporal workflow of the recipe. This is a non-trivial task that involves common-sense reasoning. However, existing efforts rely on hand-crafted features to extract the workflow graph from recipes due to the lack of large-scale labeled datasets. Moreover, they fail to utilize the cooking images, which constitute an important part of food recipes. In this paper, we build MM-ReS, the first large-scale dataset for cooking workflow construction, consisting of 9,850 recipes with human-labeled workflow graphs. Cooking steps …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The task of person-level action recognition in complex events aims to densely detect pedestrians and individually predict their actions from surveillance videos. In this paper, we present a simple yet efficient pipeline for this task, referred to as TSD-TSM networks. Firstly, we adopt the TSD detector for the pedestrian localization on each single keyframe. Secondly, we generate the sequential ROIs for a person proposal by replicating the adjusted bounding box coordinates around the keyframe. Particularly, we propose to conduct straddling expansion and region squaring on the original bounding box of a person proposal to widen the potential space of motion …

Maintaining a food journal can allow an individual to monitor eating habits, including unhealthy eating sessions, food items causing severe reactions, or portion size related information. However, manually maintaining a food journal can be burdensome. In this paper, we explore the vision of a pervasive, automated, completely unobtrusive, food journaling system using a commodity smartwatch. We present a prototype system — Annapurna— which is composed of three key components: (a) a smartwatch-based gesture recognizer that can robustly identify eating-specific gestures occurring anywhere, (b) a smartwatch-based image captor that obtains a small set of relevant images (containing views of the food …

Hierarchical identity-based signature (HIBS) plays a core role in a large community as it significantly reduces the workload of the root private key generator. To make HIBS still available and secure in post-quantum era, constructing lattice-based schemes is a promising option. In this paper, we present an efficient HIBS scheme in polynomial rings. Although there are many lattice-based signatures proposed in recent years, to the best of our knowledge, our HIBS scheme is the first ring-based construction. In the center of our construction are two new algorithms to extend lattice trapdoors to higher dimensions, which are non-trivial and of independent …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Extensive research has been conducted on sentiment analysis for software engineering (SA4SE). Researchers have invested much effort in developing customized tools (e.g., SentiStrength-SE, SentiCR) to classify the sentiment polarity for Software Engineering (SE) specific contents (e.g., discussions in Stack Overflow and code review comments). Even so, there is still much room for improvement. Recently, pre-trained Transformer-based models (e.g., BERT, XLNet) have brought considerable breakthroughs in the field of natural language processing (NLP). In this work, we conducted a systematic evaluation of five existing SA4SE tools and variants of four state-of-the-art pre-trained Transformer-based models on six SE datasets. Our work is …

Our research full paper studies the perceptions of students and proposes technology design framework for smart class participation tools. Participation in classroom discussions has been observed to improve student comprehension and performance. In our contemporary tertiary educational context, student participation is characterised in mainly two forms; inclass discussions and online forums. Both forms of participation generate voluminous amounts of knowledge. However, the present difficulty in capturing and analysing these forms of participation leads to loss of knowledge and insights, which otherwise could be very useful. This study aims to analyse ways to improve data capture as well as data analysis …

This research full paper, describes knowledge management of class discussions using an analytics based framework. Discussions, either live classroom or through online forums, when used as a teaching method can help stimulate critical thinking. It allows the teacher to explore in-depth the key concepts covered in the course, motivates students to articulate their ideas clearly and challenge the students to think more deeply. Analysing the discussions helps instructors gain better insights on the personal and collaborative learning behaviour of students. However, knowledge from in-class discussions and online forums is not effectively captured and mined due to lack of appropriate automated …

Audio descriptions can make the visual content in videos accessible to people with visual impairments. However, the majority of the online videos lack audio descriptions due in part to the shortage of experts who can create high-quality descriptions. We present ViScene, a web-based authoring tool that taps into the larger pool of sighted non-experts to help them generate high-quality descriptions via two feedback mechanisms - succinct visualizations and comments from an expert. Through a mixed-design study with N = 6 participants, we explore the usability of ViScene and the quality of the descriptions created by sighted non-experts with and without …

Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) provide the foundation of our critical infrastructures, which form the basis of emerging and future smart services and improve our quality of life in many areas. In such CPS, sensor data is transmitted over the network to the controller, which will make real-time control decisions according to the received sensor data. Due to the existence of spoofing attacks (more specifically to CPS, false data injection attacks), one has to protect the authenticity and integrity of the transmitted data. For example, a digital signature can be used to solve this issue. However, the resource-constrained field devices like sensors …

Textual data is common and informative auxiliary information for recommender systems. Most prior art utilizes text for rating prediction, but rare work connects it to top-N recommendation. Moreover, although advanced recommendation models capable of incorporating auxiliary information have been developed, none of these are specifically designed to model textual information, yielding a limited usage scenario for typical user-to-item recommendation. In this work, we present a framework of text-aware preference ranking (TPR) for top-N recommendation, in which we comprehensively model the joint association of user-item interaction and relations between items and associated text. Using the TPR framework, we construct a joint …
