Modularized Zero-Shot Vqa With Pre-Trained Models, Rui Cao, Jing Jiang
Modularized Zero-Shot Vqa With Pre-Trained Models, Rui Cao, Jing Jiang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Large-scale pre-trained models (PTMs) show great zero-shot capabilities. In this paper, we study how to leverage them for zero-shot visual question answering (VQA).Our approach is motivated by a few observations. First, VQA questions often require multiple steps of reasoning, which is still a capability that most PTMs lack. Second, different steps in VQA reasoning chains require different skills such as object detection and relational reasoning, but a single PTM may not possess all these skills. Third, recent work on zero-shot VQA does not explicitly consider multi-step reasoning chains, which makes them less interpretable compared with a decomposition-based approach. We propose …
Islamic Political Parties And Election Campaigns In Indonesia, Colm A. Fox, Jeremy Menchik
Islamic Political Parties And Election Campaigns In Indonesia, Colm A. Fox, Jeremy Menchik
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Islamist political parties are a structural feature of politics across the Muslim world, raising persisting questions for scholars of democracy. Under what conditions will Islamists moderate to support democracy and pluralism? Under what conditions will they adopt more exclusive behavior? Taking a fresh approach, we focus on electoral competition and the conditions under which Islamic party candidates campaign using either inclusive nationalist appeals or exclusively Islamic appeals. Using a unique data source, we coded the appeals contained on the campaign posters of 572 Islamic party candidates in Indonesia. We found that demographics, urban–rural differences, and the level of government office …
Outdoor Performance Of The Black Globe Temperature Sensor On A Hot And Humid Tropical Region, Juan A. Acero, Angela Dissegna, Yon Sun Tan, Adrian Tan, Leslie K. Norford
Outdoor Performance Of The Black Globe Temperature Sensor On A Hot And Humid Tropical Region, Juan A. Acero, Angela Dissegna, Yon Sun Tan, Adrian Tan, Leslie K. Norford
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
A crucial variable to evaluate thermal comfort is the mean radiant temperature (Tmrt). In this paper we evaluate the performance of the 150 mm black globe thermometer to provide reliable Tmrt values for outdoor settings in Singapore. Accurate Tmrt values are calculated by the method of integral radiation measurements. Based on these, the mean convection coefficient of the black globe has been re-calibrated. Results show an improvement in the estimation of Tmrt with the new coefficient in comparison with the default version suggested in ISO7726:1998. Increasing the averaging periods of the measured variables improved the performance of the derived mean …

Contrastive Video Question Answering Via Video Graph Transformer, Junbin Xiao Xiao, Pan Zhou, Angela Yao, Yicong Li, Richang Hong, Shuicheng Yan, Tat-Seng Chua
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We propose to perform video question answering (VideoQA) in a Contrastive manner via a Video Graph Transformer model (CoVGT). CoVGT’s uniqueness and superiority are three-fold: 1) It proposes a dynamic graph transformer module which encodes video by explicitly capturing the visual objects, their relations and dynamics, for complex spatio-temporal reasoning. 2) It designs separate video and text transformers for contrastive learning between the video and text to perform QA, instead of multi-modal transformer for answer classification. Fine-grained video-text communication is done by additional cross-modal interaction modules. 3) It is optimized by the joint fully- and self-supervised contrastive objectives between the …
Estimation Of Recursive Route Choice Models With Incomplete Trip Observations, Tien Mai, The Viet Bui, Quoc Phong Nguyen, Tho V. Le
Estimation Of Recursive Route Choice Models With Incomplete Trip Observations, Tien Mai, The Viet Bui, Quoc Phong Nguyen, Tho V. Le
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This work concerns the estimation of recursive route choice models in the situation that the trip observations are incomplete, i.e., there are unconnected links (or nodes) in the observations. A direct approach to handle this issue could be intractable because enumerating all paths between unconnected links (or nodes) in a real network is typically not possible. We exploit an expectation–maximization (EM) method that allows dealing with the missing-data issue by alternatively performing two steps of sampling the missing segments in the observations and solving maximum likelihood estimation problems. Moreover, observing that the EM method could be expensive, we propose a …

Machine-Learning Approach To Automated Doubt Identification On Stack Overflow Comments To Guide Programming Learners, Tianhao Chen, Eng Lieh Ouh, Kar Way Tan, Siaw Ling Lo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Stack Overflow is a popular Q&A platform for developers to find solutions to programming problems. However, due to the varying quality of user-generated answers, there is a need for ways to help users find high-quality answers. While Stack Overflow's community-based approach can be effective, important technical aspects of the answer need to be captured, and users’ comments might contain doubts regarding these aspects. In this paper, we showed the feasibility of using a machine learning model to identify doubts and conducted data analysis. We found that highly reputed users tend to raise more doubts; most answers have doubt in the …
Large-Scale Correlation Analysis Of Automated Metrics For Topic Models, Jia Peng Lim, Hady Wirawan Lauw
Large-Scale Correlation Analysis Of Automated Metrics For Topic Models, Jia Peng Lim, Hady Wirawan Lauw
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Automated coherence metrics constitute an important and popular way to evaluate topic models. Previous works present a mixed picture of their presumed correlation with human judgement. In this paper, we conduct a large-scale correlation analysis of coherence metrics. We propose a novel sampling approach to mine topics for the purpose of metric evaluation, and conduct the analysis via three large corpora showing that certain automated coherence metrics are correlated. Moreover, we extend the analysis to measure topical differences between corpora. Lastly, we examine the reliability of human judgement by conducting an extensive user study, which is designed as an amalgamation …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The rapid development of aspect-based sentiment analysis (ABSA) within recent decades shows great potential for real-world society. The current ABSA works, however, are mostly limited to the scenario of a single text piece, leaving the study in dialogue contexts unexplored. To bridge the gap between fine-grained sentiment analysis and conversational opinion mining, in this work, we introduce a novel task of conversational aspect-based sentiment quadruple analysis, namely DiaASQ, aiming to detect the quadruple of target-aspect-opinion-sentiment in a dialogue. We manually construct a large-scale high-quality DiaASQ dataset in both Chinese and English languages. We deliberately develop a neural model to benchmark …
Multi-Target Backdoor Attacks For Code Pre-Trained Models, Yanzhou Li, Shangqing Liu, Kangjie Chen, Xiaofei Xie, Tianwei Zhang, Yang Liu
Multi-Target Backdoor Attacks For Code Pre-Trained Models, Yanzhou Li, Shangqing Liu, Kangjie Chen, Xiaofei Xie, Tianwei Zhang, Yang Liu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Backdoor attacks for neural code models have gained considerable attention due to the advancement of code intelligence. However, most existing works insert triggers into task-specific data for code-related downstream tasks, thereby limiting the scope of attacks. Moreover, the majority of attacks for pre-trained models are designed for understanding tasks. In this paper, we propose task-agnostic backdoor attacks for code pre-trained models. Our backdoored model is pre-trained with two learning strategies (i.e., Poisoned Seq2Seq learning and token representation learning) to support the multi-target attack of downstream code understanding and generation tasks. During the deployment phase, the implanted backdoors in the victim …
Safe Mdp Planning By Learning Temporal Patterns Of Undesirable Trajectories And Averting Negative Side Effects, Siow Meng Low, Akshat Kumar, Scott Sanner
Safe Mdp Planning By Learning Temporal Patterns Of Undesirable Trajectories And Averting Negative Side Effects, Siow Meng Low, Akshat Kumar, Scott Sanner
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In safe MDP planning, a cost function based on the current state and action is often used to specify safety aspects. In real world, often the state representation used may lack sufficient fidelity to specify such safety constraints. Operating based on an incomplete model can often produce unintended negative side effects (NSEs). To address these challenges, first, we associate safety signals with state-action trajectories (rather than just immediate state-action). This makes our safety model highly general. We also assume categorical safety labels are given for different trajectories, rather than a numerical cost function, which is harder to specify by the …
Volatility Puzzle: Long Memory Or Anti-Persistency, Shuping Shi, Jun Yu
Volatility Puzzle: Long Memory Or Anti-Persistency, Shuping Shi, Jun Yu
Research Collection School Of Economics
The log realized volatility (RV) is often modeled as an autoregressive fractionally integrated moving average model ARFIMA(1,d,01,d,0). Two conflicting empirical results have been found in the literature. One stream shows that log RV has a long memory (i.e., the fractional parameter d > 0). The other stream suggests that the autoregressive coefficient α is near unity with antipersistent errors (i.e., d α close to 0 and d close to 0.5) from Model 2Model 2 (ARFIMA(1,d,01,d,0) with α close to unity and d close to –0.5). An intuitive explanation is given. For the 10 financial assets considered, despite that no definitive conclusions …
Multivariate Stochastic Volatility Models Based On Generalized Fisher Transformation, Han Chen, Yijie Fei, Jun Yu
Multivariate Stochastic Volatility Models Based On Generalized Fisher Transformation, Han Chen, Yijie Fei, Jun Yu
Research Collection School Of Economics
Modeling multivariate stochastic volatility (MSV) can be challenging, particularly when both variances and covariances are time-varying. In this paper, we address these challenges by introducing a new MSV model based on the generalized Fisher transformation of Archakov and Hansen (2021). Our model is highly exible and ensures that the variance-covariance matrix is always positive-definite. Moreover, our approach separates the driving factors of volatilities and correlations. To conduct Bayesian analysis of the model, we use a Particle Gibbs Ancestor Sampling (PGAS) method, which facilitates Bayesian model comparison. We also extend our MSV model to cover the leverage effect in volatilities and …
Young Women In Cities, Yumi Koh, Jing Li, Yifan Wu, Junjian Yi, Hanzhe Zhang
Young Women In Cities, Yumi Koh, Jing Li, Yifan Wu, Junjian Yi, Hanzhe Zhang
Research Collection School Of Economics
Young women outnumber young men in cities in many countries during periods of economic growth and urbanization. This gender imbalance among young urbanites is more pronounced in larger cities. We use the gradual rollout of special economic zones across China as a quasi-experiment to establish the causes of this gender imbalance. Our analysis suggests that a key contributor is gender-differential incentives to migrate due to rural women’s higher likelihood of marrying and marrying up in cities when urbanization creates more economic opportunities and an abundance of high-income marriage-age men.
The Impact Of Upzoning On Housing Construction In Auckland*, Ryan Greenaway-Mcgrevy, Peter C. B. Phillips
The Impact Of Upzoning On Housing Construction In Auckland*, Ryan Greenaway-Mcgrevy, Peter C. B. Phillips
Research Collection School Of Economics
There is a growing debate about whether upzoning is an effective policy response to housing shortages and unaffordable housing. This paper provides empirical evidence to further inform debate by examining the various impacts of recently implemented zoning reforms on housing construction in Auckland, the largest metropolitan area in New Zealand. In 2016, the city upzoned approximately three quarters of its residential land to facilitate construction of more intensive housing. We use a quasi-experimental approach to analyze the short-run impacts of the reform on construction, allowing for potential shifts in construction from non-upzoned to upzoned areas (displacement effects) that would, if …
Investment And The Long Swings Of Unemployment, Hian Teck Hoon, Margarita Katsimi, Gylfi Zoega
Investment And The Long Swings Of Unemployment, Hian Teck Hoon, Margarita Katsimi, Gylfi Zoega
Research Collection School Of Economics
We estimate the medium-term relationship between investment and unemployment over the period 1960–2017 in 20 OECD countries, a period that includes the years of the Great Recession. While neoclassical growth theory typically assumes full employment—with no effect of investment on unemployment—and New-Keynesian models assume that such a relationship only exists in the short term at business cycle frequencies, we find that over our sample period covering more than 5 decades, a statistically significant negative relationship does exist: in decades when investment fell, unemployment increased. Panel estimation, using a measure of stock market volatility as an instrument for investment, confirms the …

A Lightweight Privacy-Preserving Path Selection Scheme In Vanets, Guojun Wang, Huijie Yang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
With the rapid development of edge computing, artificial intelligence and other technologies, intelligent transportation services in the vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) such as in-vehicle navigation and distress alert are increasingly being widely used in life. Currently, road navigation is an essential service in the vehicle network. However, when a user employs the road navigation service, his private data maybe exposed to roadside nodes. Meanwhile, when the trusted authorization sends the navigation route data to the user, the user can obtain all the road data. Especially, other unrequested data might be related to the military. Therefore, how to achieve secure …

Forward/Backward And Content Private Dsse For Spatial Keyword Queries, Xiangyu Wang, Jianfeng Ma, Ximeng Liu, Yinbin Miao, Yang Liu, Robert H. Deng
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Spatial keyword queries are attractive techniques that have been widely deployed in real-life applications in recent years, such as social networks and location-based services. However, existing solutions neither support dynamic update nor satisfy the privacy requirements in real applications. In this article, we investigate the problem of Dynamic Searchable Symmetric Encryption (DSSE) for spatial keyword queries. First, we formulate the definition of DSSE for spatial keyword queries (namely, DSSESKQ) and extend the DSSE leakage functions to capture the leakages in DSSESKQ. Then, we present a practical DSSESKQ construction based on geometric prefix encoding inverted-index and encrypted bitmap. Rigorous security analysis …

Information Screening Whilst Exploiting! Multimodal Relation Extraction With Feature Denoising And Multimodal Topic Modeling, Shengqiong Wu, Hao Fei, Yixin Cao, Lidong Bing, Tat-Seng Chua
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Existing research on multimodal relation extraction (MRE) faces two co-existing challenges, internal-information over-utilization and external-information under-exploitation. To combat that, we propose a novel framework that simultaneously implements the idea of internal-information screening and external-information exploiting. First, we represent the fine-grained semantic structures of the input image and text with the visual and textual scene graphs, which are further fused into a unified cross-modal graph (CMG). Based on CMG, we perform structure refinement with the guidance of the graph information bottleneck principle, actively denoising the less-informative features. Next, we perform topic modeling over the input image and text, incorporating latent multimodal …

Cone: An Efficient Coarse-To-Fine Alignment Framework For Long Video Temporal Grounding, Zhijian Hou, Wanjun Zhong, Lei Ji, Difei Gao, Kun Yan, Wing-Kwong Chan, Chong-Wah Ngo, Mike Z. Shou, Nan. Duan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This paper tackles an emerging and challenging problem of long video temporal grounding (VTG) that localizes video moments related to a natural language (NL) query. Compared with short videos, long videos are also highly demanded but less explored, which brings new challenges in higher inference computation cost and weaker multi-modal alignment. To address these challenges, we propose CONE, an efficient COarse-to-fiNE alignment framework. CONE is a plug-and-play framework on top of existing VTG models to handle long videos through a sliding window mechanism. Specifically, CONE (1) introduces a query-guided window selection strategy to speed up inference, and (2) proposes a …

Artificial intelligence (AI) has elicited much attention across disciplines and industries (Hyder et al., Citation2019). AI has been defined as “a system’s ability to correctly interpret external data, to learn from such data, and to use those learnings to achieve specific goals and tasks through flexible adaptation” (Kaplan & Haenlein, Citation2019, p. 15). AI has gone through several development stages and AI winters. In the first two decades (i.e., 1950s and 1960s), AI demonstrated success which included programs such as General Problem Solver (Newell et al., Citation1959) and ELIZA (Weizenbaum, Citation1966). However, limitations in processing capacity and reduced spending on …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Many Duplicate Bug Report Detection (DBRD) techniques have been proposed in the research literature. The industry uses some other techniques. Unfortunately, there is insufficient comparison among them, and it is unclear how far we have been. This work fills this gap by comparing the aforementioned techniques. To compare them, we first need a benchmark that can estimate how a tool would perform if applied in a realistic setting today. Thus, we first investigated potential biases that affect the fair comparison of the accuracy of DBRD techniques. Our experiments suggest that data age and issue tracking system choice cause a significant …

Quality assurance (QA) tools are receiving more and more attention and are widely used by developers. Given the wide range of solutions for QA technology, it is still a question of evaluating QA tools. Most existing research is limited in the following ways: (i) They compare tools without considering scanning rules analysis. (ii) They disagree on the effectiveness of tools due to the study methodology and benchmark dataset. (iii) They do not separately analyze the role of the warnings. (iv) There is no large-scale study on the analysis of time performance. To address these problems, in the paper, we systematically …

Product question answering (PQA), aiming to automatically provide instant responses to customer’s questions in E-Commerce platforms, has drawn increasing attention in recent years. Compared with typical QA problems, PQA exhibits unique challenges such as the subjectivity and reliability of user-generated contents in E-commerce platforms. Therefore, various problem settings and novel methods have been proposed to capture these special characteristics. In this paper, we aim to systematically review existing research efforts on PQA. Specifically, we categorize PQA studies into four problem settings in terms of the form of provided answers. We analyze the pros and cons, as well as present existing …

Bootstrapping Two-Stage Quasi-Maximum Likelihood Estimators Of Time Series Models, Sílvia Gonçalves, Ulrich Hounyo, Andrew John Patton, Kevin Sheppard
Research Collection School Of Economics
This article provides results on the validity of bootstrap inference methods for two-stage quasi-maximum likelihood estimation involving time series data, such as those used for multivariate volatility models or copula-based models. Existing approaches require the researcher to compute and combine many first- and second-order derivatives, which can be difficult to do and is susceptible to error. Bootstrap methods are simpler to apply, allowing the substitution of capital (CPU cycles) for labor (keeping track of derivatives). We show the consistency of the bootstrap distribution and consistency of bootstrap variance estimators, thereby justifying the use of bootstrap percentile intervals and bootstrap standard …

Insider Trading And Corporate Spinoffs, Charlie Charoenwong, Kuan Yong David Ding, Jing Pan
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
This paper studies insider trading to examine undervaluation as a motive behind corporate spinoffs. We show an unmistakable increase (decrease) in the number of insider purchases (sales) and net purchases (sales) in the four quarters prior to a spinoff announcement. In addition, relative to a benchmark period, insider selling is significantly lower, and their net purchases significantly higher, in the three quarters prior to a spinoff announcement compared to other periods. We find that announcement period excess returns for abnormal net insider purchases are significantly higher than excess returns for abnormal net insider sales. Moreover, only firms with abnormal net …

The Regenerative Finance (ReFi) movement aims to fundamentally transform the governance of global common pool resources (CPRs), such as the atmosphere, which are being degraded despite international efforts. The ReFi movement seeks to achieve this by utilizing digital monitoring, reporting, and verification (D-MRV); tokenization of assets; and decentralized governance approaches. However, there is currently a lack of a clear path forward to create and implement models that actually drive the “Re-” in ReFi beyond perpetuating the existing extractive economics and toward actual regeneration. In addition, ReFi suffers from growing pains, lacking a common interoperability framework and definition for determining what …

Automatic Scoring Of Speeded Interpersonal Assessment Center Exercises Via Machine Learning: Initial Psychometric Evidence And Practical Guidelines, Louis Hickman, Christoph N. Herde, Filip Lievens, Louis Tay
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Assessment center (AC) exercises such as role-plays have established themselves as valuable approaches for obtaining insights into interpersonal behavior, but they are often considered the “Rolls Royce” of personnel assessment due to their high costs. The observation and rating process comprises a substantial part of these costs. In an exploratory case study, we capitalize on recent advances in natural language processing (NLP) by developing NLP-based machine learning (ML) models to investigate the possibility of automatically scoring AC exercises. First, we compared the convergent-related validity and contamination with word count of ML scores based on models that used different NLP methods …

Recently, shorter assessments have emerged as potential alternatives for more resourceful traditional selection approaches. Multiple, speeded assessments (MSAs) represent such an alternative. In MSAs, candidates participate in a large number of short (a maximum of 5 min), behavioral simulations in which they face a variety of job situations. Initial psychometric evidence on the validity of MSAs is promising. Yet, validity represents only one piece of evidence. It is not known whether MSAs disadvantage specific subgroups, which may inhibit diversity. There is also no information on candidates' experience of going through an MSA, which is pivotal for the attractiveness of the …
