Clarificative Evaluation Of A Nurse Practitioner-Led Heart Failure Clinic, Jennifer Mccaffery

DNP and Student Works

Nationally, heart failure (HF) is the leading cause of disability, hospitalizations, and death among veterans. Health care providers continue to struggle to maximize the quality of life and functional status of their patients. A significant amount of research is available on the topic of HF clinics; however, the unique patient population and staffing issues at this facility have made prior attempts to implement national recommendations unsuccessful. A nurse practitioner (NP)-led HF clinic was created in 2009 without any formal planning, treatment criteria, or outcome measures. Intuitively, the clinic seemed to be decreasing hospitalizations and improving symptom management. However, no data …

Active Teaching, Active Learning: Are Today's Students Engaged In Learning?, Indra Hershorin

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Todays students are different from the past and nursing faculty find themselves struggling to convey enormous amounts of information to students whose horizon of learning has changed. Prensky (2001) claims that students' today are "native speakers" of the digital language. This generation of learners is growing-up in a digital world surrounded by computers, video games, the Internet, smart phones, MP3 players, computer tablets, and e-book readers. According to Jackson and Crawford (2008) to-days learners are cognitively impacted by digital experiences requiring educators to revisit and ultimately expand the horizon of delivery methods. A review of the state of the science …

Pituitary Tumors: Patient Perceptions Of Cognitive Deficits, Christine G. Yedinak Sep 2012

Pituitary Tumors: Patient Perceptions Of Cognitive Deficits, Christine G. Yedinak

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Background: The prevalence of pituitary tumors (PT) has been estimated from 15 % of all brain tumors. Both physiologic and psychologic functions can be disturbed, affecting the individual's life functions and quality(Qol). PT are classified by size and hormonal productivity: Macroadenomas (MA) > 1cm and microadenomas (mA) < 1cm tumors; those producing excess hormonal secretions as functional adenomas (FA) and those with normal hormonal function as non-functional adenomas (NFA). Hormonal deficiencies can occur in association with all PTs. Patient complaints of cognitive dysfunction and QoL changes have been validated to occur in patients with hormonally active tumors, but not for patients with microadenomas and non-functional tumors.

Purpose: To determine if cognitive deficits are perceived by patients with NFmA when compared to patients with NFMA.

Methods: Cognitive function was evaluated using a modified, disease specific version of the FACT-Cog questionnaire, limited to perception of cognitive capacity. Perceived ability to learn and concentrate, distractibility, mental agility, factual and short term memory and …

Advancing Nursing Education Through Interdisciplinary Learning: Student Quality & Safety Program, Adele M. Spegman, M. Christine Alichnie

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Nursing competencies have expanded to address the complexities of contemporary healthcare. Patient-centered care and demands for transparent outcomes require nurses to have active roles in Quality Improvement (QI) processes (IOM, 2010). Collaborative applications of evidence-based care, a component of quality outcomes, highlight the significance of interdisciplinary partnerships (Thibault, 2011). Such skills must be purposely fostered in students. Although the Quality and Safety Education for Nursing project (Cronenwett, 2007) provides guidelines, students have few opportunities for interdisciplinary clinical learning. Little is reported about the education processes that facilitate effective teamwork. This presentation describes an innovative program for nursing and medical students. …

An Approach To Data Management And Evaluation For Evidence-Based Practice Projects, Martha Sylvia, Mary F. Terhaar Sep 2012

An Approach To Data Management And Evaluation For Evidence-Based Practice Projects, Martha Sylvia, Mary F. Terhaar

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Strong data management skills are essential for effective evaluation of evidence-based practice project implementation. Completion of a scholarly evidence-based project requires application of data management skills in order to understand and address a complex practice, process, or systems problem; develop, implement and monitor an innovative evidence-based intervention to address that problem; and evaluate the outcomes. In fact, EBP projects may require stronger data management skills than those required in traditional research because they often make use of data generated for direct care or administrative purposes that require sophisticated data cleansing and manipulation techniques. These projects commonly use observational study techniques …

Social Network Analysis As A Method For Nursing Research, Anne L. Ersig, Anthony Paik, Lioness Ayres Sep 2012

Social Network Analysis As A Method For Nursing Research, Anne L. Ersig, Anthony Paik, Lioness Ayres

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Purpose: Nursing research often relies on data obtained from individuals in an effort to understand human experiences of health and illness. These individual experiences do not occur in isolation; instead, they take place within larger contexts, such as families, social groups, and schools or communities. These organizations function as complex adaptive systems (CAS), which resist reduction into simple cause-and-effect relationships. Investigating such systems, including collection of data from multiple individuals, requires flexible and adaptable research methods. Social network analysis (SNA) facilitates data collection from multiple individuals in the same context (e.g., a family, an organization), examination of interactions among individuals, …
