Relational Aggression In The Nursing Workplace Environment, Cheryl Dellasega
Relational Aggression In The Nursing Workplace Environment, Cheryl Dellasega
Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)
Relational Aggression (RA), sometimes known as female bullying, drama, or "mean girls," is more common among women than men, especially during the formative adolescent years. While several studies on "lateral" or "horizontal" nurse-nurse violence have been reported, RA between workers of equal rank and job description is just one piece of the bad behavior pie, since RA occurs between nurses and unit clerks, physicians, and even patients. The purpose of these analyses was to: 1) Test The Relational Aggression Scale for reliability of use with health care workers, and 2) Compare and contrast RA and other variables of interest between …

Session presented on Saturday, April 13, 2013:
The complexity of patient care challenges nurse educators to develop new approaches to clinical education that foster communication, decision-making and critical reasoning skills of students. A student peer coaching program, carried out within clinical courses for an undergraduate baccalaureate nursing program will be presented. The program has been shown to enhance: communication, delegation skills, clinical judgment, clinical reasoning, and professionalism for first-semester clinical nursing students and graduating senior nursing students. The aforementioned areas address key elements of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Essentials for Baccalaureate Education (2008). Skillful communication between …

National Network Study Of Operational Failures In Frontline Nursing: Scaling Up For Policy, Kathleen R. Stevens, Frank Puga, Robert Ferrer, Darpan I. Patel
Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)
Session presented on Saturday, April 13, 2013:
Nurses are aligned to drive frontline policy in quality improvement. Yet studies often lack rigor and sample sizes large enough to be definitive. While smaller studies show that frontline operational failures occur every hour of every shift and threaten patient safety, multi-setting studies are requisite in order to craft effective microsystems interventions. Such interventions will foster learning organization climates through decreasing workarounds and making system corrections. Aims: Using a new research network for healthcare improvement, conduct a landmark national study to explain first-order operational failures in medical-surgical units in context of work environment …

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)
Session presented on Saturday, April 13, 2013:
The Practice Environment Scale of the Nurse Work Index is a valid, reliable tool to assess the quality of professional nursing practice environments and is endorsed by several national quality organizations. Nursing leaders receive PES-NWI data with national benchmarks to guide their practice, yet not all know how to interpret the data and use it to guide practice. The PES-NWI was developed based on findings from studies of the original Magnet hospitals. It consists of 31 items situated in 5 domains: Nurse Participation in Hospital Affairs; Nursing Foundations for Quality Care; Nurse Manager …

Horizontal Violence Among Student Nurses: It's Time We Stop Eating Our Young!, Elizabeth Hammond-Ritschard
Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)
Session presented on Saturday, April 13, 2013: This presentation will provide an in depth description of causes and effects that horizontal violence has on the student nurse in the clinical setting. Where does horizontal violence begin? For many, it begins in nursing school. Students often are subject to horizontal violence by professional nursing staff, who serves as role models. A discussion will include the effects of a negative encounter between a staff nurse and a student nurse. Such encounters of horizontal violence among student nurses result in the student experiencing feelings of oppression and powerlessness, unfair treatment, fear, verbal abuse …

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)
Session presented on Saturday, April 13, 2013:
In January 2005, American Association of Critical-Care Nurses published the Healthy Work Environment Standards in response to the concerns of acute and critical care nurses about the deterioration of healthcare work environments. In this report six standards were identified: skilled communication, true collaboration, effective decision-making, appropriate staffing, meaningful recognition and authentic leadership. In numerous studies, ineffective communication between nurses and physicians was the single factor most significantly associated with increased hospital mortality. In addition, during the transitions of care such as postoperative handover process, inadequate communication was implicated in nearly 70% of all …

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)
Session presented on Saturday, April 13, 2013:
Background and Purpose: Given the impending nursing shortage and high turnover intentions of nurses within the first two years of practice, recent reports of workplace mistreatment targeting new graduate nurses are unsettling. Coworker and supervisor incivility and bullying negatively influence nurses' work and health however it is unclear whether these forms of workplace mistreatment have similar precipitating factors and outcomes. This study examines an exploratory model of antecedents and outcomes of three forms of workplace mistreatment.
Methods: Secondary data analysis was performed on data from a larger study of new graduate's worklife. From …

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)
Session presented on Sunday, April 14, 2013:
Clark (2009) extends the definition of incivility to incorporate both the behaviors (rude and disruptive) and their effect, that is, psychological or physiological distress. Academic incivility encompasses behaviors that disrupt or interfere with the teaching and learning environment (Clark & Springer, 2010). Incivility can progress from low risk behaviors, such as eye rolling to develop into threatening behaviors if left unaddressed. Incivility in nursing education is documented as a mild to moderate problem that increases with personal and environmental stressors. Undergraduate students and faculty at a Midwest university were asked to complete the …

Workplace Bullying: More Than Eating Our Young, Terri L. Townsend
Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)
Session presented on Saturday, April 13, 2013:
The playground bully who used physical means to demonstrate superiority has grown up, using social and psychological means to create hostility and fear. Bullying may be termed horizontal hostility, hazing, relational aggression, lateral violence, or workplace incivility. Bullying destroys unit morale and jeopardizes patient safety. With approximately 60% of nurses leaving their first job within six months because of bullying, the costs are high, both from a financial standpoint as well as the emotional standpoint from staff members. In addition, bullying can lead to poor communication, lack of teamwork, and inadequate staffing, as …

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)
Session presented on Sunday, April 14, 2013:
Healthy Work Environments (HWEs) are the responsibility of all healthcare professionals. Several factors contribute HWEs, including skilled communication and true collaboration. Bullying as a disruptive behavior prevents true collaboration between nurses. In the workplace, this negative behavior frequently results in nurse turnover, decreased quality of care, and increased costs to organizations. With the current nursing shortage and with large numbers of nurses retiring in the next 15 years, it is critical that organizations find innovative ways to decrease bullying to retain nurses and contribute to the health of the environment. Further, it is …

Medication Errors Reporting: Do Work Environment And Medication Practices Matter?, Amany A. Farag, Yelena Perkhounkova
Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)
Session presented on Sunday, April 14, 2013: Background: Medication administration is a complex multi-stage process that involves many healthcare professionals. Medication errors occur in every step of the medication process, with 38% occurring at the administration phase. Nurses working in hospitals spend 40% of their time administering medication and blamed most of the time for medication errors. Designing intervention strategies to overcome this problem is highly challenged by the under-reporting of medication errors. Having non-punitive safety climate, transformational leader and proper medication administration practices in assumed to increase nurses willingness to report medication errors. Empirical evidence to support this proposition …

The Development And Testing Of The Codependency-Overeating Model In Undergraduate Social Science Students In A Mississippi College, Denise Bynum
Dissertations
Overeating is a common eating disorder and often leads to obesity and to significant physical, emotional and social problems often warranting nursing care. The psychological and behavioral factors surrounding overeating are noted frequently in the literature, but are not emphasized in most prevention and treatment programs for overeating. Codependency has expanded beyond the chemical dependency field and describes the dysfunctional pattern of behavior of an individual in a relationship with another person or from survival in a dysfunctional family of origin. This pattern of behavior includes the neglect of personal needs, focus and dependency on others, boundary/control issues, low self-worth …
