Sigma Resource Papers
The mission of the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI), is advancing world health and celebrating nursing excellence in scholarship, leadership, and service. Nurses in all settings develop and use scientific evidence to advance health. Sigma Theta Tau International has promoted the development of and shared definitions and resources related to clinical scholarship (Dreher, 1999) and the scholarship of reflective practice (Freshwater, Horton-Deutsch, Sherwood & Taylor, 2005). Over the past decade, understanding of the nature of scholarship has expanded to embrace implementation and translation sciences, the harnessing of large sets of clinical data to provide evidence for …

Preventing And Addressing Abuse And Neglect Of Older Adults: Person-Centred, Collaborative, System-Wide Approaches, Registered Nurses' Association Of Ontario
General Submissions: Community and Population-based Materials
Best Practice Guidelines are systematically developed statements designed to assist nurses and clients in making decisions about appropriate health care (Field & Lohr, 1990). Initial development of this guideline's purpose and scope included three teleconference focus groups with a total of 26 topic experts and health-care practitioners across Canada, and one in-person focus group with 20 older adults living in Ontario. The Expert Panel was then convened and determined the purpose of the guideline: To expand the awareness of abuse and neglect of older adults and provide evidence-based recommendations for preventing and addressing abuse and neglect in all health-care settings …

General Submissions: Community and Population-based Materials
Vulnerable groups with respect to health care are those susceptible to heightened adverse physical, psychological, or sociological health because of their particular status within society (De Chesnay & Anderson, 2008). Nurses and other health care professionals who work with non-institutionalized patients regularly provide care for members of vulnerable groups (Bailey, 2010). "Vulnerable populations include individuals living in poverty, those having immigrant status, people of color, and people who are marginalized by their sexual preference and/or religion" (Bailey, 2010, p. 55).

Biennial Convention (CONV)
Session presented on: Sunday, November 17, 2013:
Over the last decade, nursing educators have worked to embed evidence-based practice in curricula. Yet gaps exist in the preparation of the workforce educated prior to the infusion of evidence-based practice in nursing education. Three Joanna Briggs Institute Collaborating centers have developed and implemented clinical fellowships to address the professional development needs of clinicians. The fellowships build fundamental evidence-based practice skills that include defining problems, asking questions, searching and appraising evidence, implementing the evidence, and evaluating and sustaining outcomes. Because of the collaborative nature of the centers, each fellowship shares common elements; however, …

Is The Annual Gynecological Exam Necessary?, Joyce Cappiello
Biennial Convention (CONV)
Session presented on: Tuesday, November 19, 2013:
Background: The concept of an annual gynecological screening visit to identify disease at an early stage at which an intervention is more effective is an established component of women's health care. Both patients and providers have accepted this schedule of visits as important and the gynecological exam as integral to the visit. However, there is little evidence to support the benefits of routine annual pelvic exams in low risk women. The components of the wellness visit can be better aligned with health improvement priorities of Healthy People and the IOM report on Clinical …

The health and wellness of the American people is in critical condition. Although cardiovascular disease is technically the leading cause of death in Americans, behaviors are truly the number one killer, due to smoking, overeating, lack of physical activity, non-adherence to medications and suicidal gestures. Overweight and obesity will soon surpass tobacco as the number one cause of preventable death and disease in the United States. With the rapid increase in the prevalence of overweight and obesity, the Centers for Disease Control predict that one out of three Americans will have diabetes by …
