Leadership As Influence: Reflective Models To Create Work Environments Focused On Quality And Safety, Gwen D. Sherwood
Leadership As Influence: Reflective Models To Create Work Environments Focused On Quality And Safety, Gwen D. Sherwood
Biennial Convention (CONV)
Session presented on: Monday, November 18, 2013:
Nurses must constantly respond to change, in practice, shifting organizational systems, and evolving team relationships. Developing a work place for all to thrive belongs to all and challenges traditional leadership models. Leadership is influence. How we develop, manage, and influence relationships within nursing and inter-professional teams determines our effectiveness, affects satisfaction, and a key factor in quality and safety outcomes. Reflective practice helps advance leadership capacity. This symposium explores three models grounded in reflective practices to facilitate transformation of team members; developing leadership and influence creates the potential to achieve common goals and …

Transforming Education Through Reflection: Pedagogies In Action, Sara Horton-Deutsch
Biennial Convention (CONV)
Session presented on: Monday, November 18, 2013:
The challenges and opportunities in developing nurses for practice have never been greater. New quality and safety science, advances in knowledge and technology, increased patient involvement, market driven health care, and altered care settings where nurses practice mandate transformation in how we educate and prepare students for practice. A new vision for transforming education that prepares nurses with advanced knowledge, judgment, skills and ethical standards calls for teaching approaches that are strong in situated and experiential learning ( Benner et al, 2010). Educational strategies that engage students in deeper understanding of classroom material …

Clear, critical thinking and communication are imperatives in providing quality nursing care. We are challenged more than ever before with the effect of fatigue on outcomes. What is fatigue? Every day, during every shift, nurses experience fatigue of mind, body and spirit. Workload, work hours, work structures and other factors can indirectly or directly cause fatigue within the profession. The public expects, and deserves, professional, caring, competent, and compassionate …

Addressing National Research Priorities In Improvement Science, Kathleen R. Stevens
Biennial Convention (CONV)
Session presented on: Tuesday, November 19, 2013:
Healthcare experts, administrators, researchers, and clinicians across multiple disciplines are developing and testing new strategies to improve the safety and quality of patient care; however, national capacity to study improvement falls well behind the need to discover 'what works'. The study of complex healthcare service delivery and microsystems requires new skills in research methods, new partnerships across academic and clinical traditions, and multi-site research approaches to account for scale-up and spread of tested strategies. This symposium explores nurse-led nationally-funded achievements toward national advancing improvement science. The underlying foundations of the design of the …

From Impairment To Empowerment: Addressing Substance Use Disorder In The Nurse Profession, Karolyn Crowley, Carrie J. Morgan
Biennial Convention (CONV)
Special Session presented on: Monday, November 18, 2013:
Knowing that an estimated 1 in 10 nurses suffers from substance use disorder (SUD), makes this topic poignantly relevant for all nurse & related professionals. Deficient education, cultural stigma and avoidance set up nurses with SUDs for greater risk than recovery. Recognizing that addiction is a disease, it is a failure in the nurse profession to perceive nurses with SUDs as weaker or having moral shortcomings. This promotes ignorance and drives the disease deeper underground. It's time to get the conversation started: How do we become more informed and proactive in addressing …

Communicating with a patient who only speaks Spanish creates an obstacle for health care professionals trying to provide appropriate and timely care. The aim of this study was to obtain information to guide change in Emergency Department practice and promote more effective communication and respectful …
