Student Perceptions, Experiences And Outcomes In Two Studies Of Precepted And Traditional Clinical Learning Environments, Susan M. Hendricks, Debbie Demeester, Linda Wallace
Nursing Education Research Conference (NERC)
Session presented on: Friday, April 4, 2014:
As health care increases in complexity, clinical learning continues remains a critical issue in nursing education. This session compares the findings from two similar studies undertaken at two Midwestern public universities with comparable curricula, each with a different precepted clinical model. Both studies considered student perceptions of learning facilitation, practice opportunities with skills, and learning outcomes in the related didactic coursework among students in the precepted and traditional model groups. The first study considered a precepted clinical learning model in which students were placed in a single health care system and worked with …

My Patient Died: A National Study Of Nursing Students' Perceptions After Experiencing A Patient Death, Barbara A. Heise, Renea Beckstrand, Debra Wing
Nursing Education Research Conference (NERC)
Session presented on: Friday, April 4, 2014:
Death is an emotionally charged and high stress situation for everyone. The majority of nurses will experience the death of a patient. Nursing students also encounter death and dying while in their clinical settings. Debriefing after high fidelity simulations of patient demise occurs routinely and are efficacious. Yet, pilot study data (N=33) revealed that in real-life clinical settings nursing students often do not receive debriefing despite students classifying the experience as traumatic. The purpose of this national study was to determine the following: 1) the prevalence of a patient death during a student's …
Evaluation Of An Objective Based Formative Clinical Evaluation Tool, Janie Best, Annette Hines
Evaluation Of An Objective Based Formative Clinical Evaluation Tool, Janie Best, Annette Hines
Nursing Education Research Conference (NERC)
Session presented on: Saturday, April 5, 2014: The co-investigators, as nurse educators, identified a problem with the current formative evaluation tool that was used in a beginning clinical course in a baccalaureate nursing program. Specifically, the students and faculty reported that the tool was a cumbersome list of expected behaviors and did not facilitate documentation of student learning in the clinical setting. Also, when using the current tool, students' reflection on the clinical experience was minimal. As students enter the clinical setting, it is important that they receive clear feedback and guidance regarding their clinical competence. Students need well-defined expectations …

Transition To Academic Nurse Educator: How Does Readiness, Confidence, And Number Of Children Impact Career Change?, Robin S. Goodrich
Nursing Education Research Conference (NERC)
Session presented on: Friday, April 4, 2014:
The nursing faculty shortage dictates the need to recruit and retain excellence in the academic nurse educator role. This study investigated the relationships among academic nurse educator's levels of readiness, confidence, personal control, support, perceived independence, general self-esteem, level of locus of control in the work settings, and demographic information. This research applies the theory of Experiencing Transitions (Meleis, Sawyer, Im, Messias, & Schumacher 2000) as it relates to nurses' transition to academic nurse educator. A convenience sample of registered nurses in the United States who hold current full-time employment at an accredited …

Nursing Education Research Conference (NERC)
Session presented on: Saturday, April 5, 2014:
Accurate measurement of university student satisfaction has been associated with later professional attitudes, career commitment, and retention. Universities need to become more competitive business-like service industries focusing on meeting or exceeding the needs of their students while competing for scarce resources and establishing lasting relationships with alumni. Assessment of student satisfaction in nursing is complex in that we must assess both in-class theory courses and clinical practice. As educators of future professional nurses it behooves us to do a comprehensive assessment of how our students view our programs and curriculum, as it may …

There is an extreme shortage of registered nurses in the United States (U.S.). This shortage is projected to grow to 260,000 RNs by the year 2025 (AACN, 2010a). In order to meet the current and future health care needs of the population of the U.S., nursing schools would have to graduate at least 30,000 registered nurses annually. According to the AACN, this calls for a 30% increase in the current number of nursing students graduating from Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) programs (2010a). The purpose of this qualitative study was to discover …

Dedicated Education Units: Partnerships That Promote Nursing Leadership Development, Lee A. Galuska
Nursing Education Research Conference (NERC)
Session presented on: Saturday, April 5, 2014: Recent recommendations for the development of nurse leaders at every level require that we examine how leadership competencies are most effectively developed in nurses. Strategies for developing leadership skills in the baccalaureate nursing student include a strong academic foundation and the opportunity to apply classroom learning in the clinical setting. The dedicated education unit (DEU) model, an academic-service partnership designed to more effectively prepare nursing students to transition into practice, has the potential for enhancing leadership competency development. A mixed methods study was conducted to explore the relationship between clinical experience in a …

Impacting Student Success: The Importance Of Gender Diversity Within Nursing Education, Barbara Ellen Le Blanc
Nursing Education Research Conference (NERC)
Session presented on: Friday, April 4, 2014:
There are factors that affect the nursing profession's ability to recruit, retain and successfully graduate male nurses, including lack of acknowledgement of the diverse needs of men, particularly in the education system. There are often limited opportunities for mentorship, sexism on the part of some educators and lack of acknowledgment of the differences between males and females. The male nursing student is often exposed to only a feminine gendered construct of the nurse, incorporating stereotypical behaviours and responses equated with the (feminine) nursing ideal. This descriptive phenomenological study examines the lived experience of …
Active Teaching Strategies For A Sense Of Salience: End-Of-Life Communication, Mary Lou Kopp
Active Teaching Strategies For A Sense Of Salience: End-Of-Life Communication, Mary Lou Kopp
Nursing Education Research Conference (NERC)
Session presented on: Friday, April 4, 2014:
The problem addressed was twofold: First, passive lecture prevents transfer to situational decision-making, or a sense of salience (Benner, Sutphen, Leonard, & Day, 2010). Nursing education pedagogy is in need of revision. Many nurse educators teach from tacit, or experience in how they were originally taught. Nurse educators must prioritize utilization of educational science. Active teaching models are meant to encourage a sense of salience by integrating theory and practice (Benner et al., 2010). However, the inconsistent nature of active learning definitions prevents generalization of research findings. Fink (2013) provided a structured definition …

Session presented on: Friday, April 4, 2014:
Certification is designed to protect the public, recognize and encourage professional achievement, and enhance professionalism. While certification of nurses in areas of clinical specialty has existed for almost 40 years, certification of nurse educators is less than a decade old. While clinical certification of nurses has been linked to improved patient outcomes, it is unknown whether nurse educator certification leads to better student and faculty outcomes. A pilot study was conducted to investigate perceptions regarding nurse educator certification among nursing faculty and to adapt an existing survey tool (Perceived Value of Certification Tool) …

Six of the scales represented the instructional delivery methods of instructor support, student interaction and collaboration, …
Baby Doll Therapy In Dementia Patients, Barbara A. Braden
Baby Doll Therapy In Dementia Patients, Barbara A. Braden
Dissertations
Dementia is a condition exhibited by emotional and physical states such as anxiety, agitation, sleeplessness, inability to care for oneself, wandering, defiant and sometimes violent behavior, and other unsafe actions. Chemical restraints are often used to control agitated behaviors, but are not always effective and produce untoward effects. A review of the literature for alternative therapies to chemical restraints indicated that doll therapy has provided purposeful activity that can help dementia residents feel useful. In most instances they are less agitated, sleep better, relate to others better, and have an over-all positive affect improvement (Baumann, 1990, Higging, 2010, & James, …
Essential Skills For Evidence-Based Practice: Appraising Qualitative Research, Jeanne T. Grace
Essential Skills For Evidence-Based Practice: Appraising Qualitative Research, Jeanne T. Grace
Individual Articles
Research from qualitative traditions is often ignored as a resource for evidence-based practice. Findings from qualitative research, however, are of particular benefit to generalist nurses. Human responses to health concerns are at the core of nursing practice, and these responses are often identified through qualitative inquiry. Qualitative findings tend to be accessible and suitable for personal, rather than institutional, application to practice. This article reviews the differences between quantitative and qualitative research and suggests a model for critiquing and applying qualitative research in practice. Instructions for a brief appraisal process are provided in both English and Thai.

Visionary Leadership: Charting A Course For The Health System And Nursing In Ontario, Registered Nurses' Association Of Ontario
General Submissions: Nursing as Profession
The Registered Nurses' Association of Ontario (RNAO) believes it's important to look down the road, today, and begin planning the future of our health system. By doing so, we can reach our destination with a clear sense of what we want, and how we get there. The work of registered nurses (RN) and nurse practitioners (NP) is central to our health system. The role they play is critical to creating a system that is person-centred, timely, effective, and efficient. That's why Ontario's nurses have developed a vision - a bold vision - to ensure Ontarians are served by a system …

Enhancing Community Care For Ontarians (Ecco) 2.0, Registered Nurses' Association Of Ontario
General Submissions: Community and Population-based Materials
In October 2012, the Registered Nurses' Association of Ontario (RNAO) issued Enhancing Community Care for Ontarians (ECCO), a bold model for health system transformation. Subject to significant praise, debate and discussion, this model generated timely and important dialogue on how to make the system more integrated and person-centred, while ensuring the ongoing sustainability of a publicly-funded and not-for-profit delivery model. Today, more than ever, we believe the dialogue must continue in a transparent way that is open to the public. To this end, RNAO is issuing ECCO 2.0.

Using An Epidemiological Approach To Critically Analyze A Population Health Problem - Al Hamsa Prison, Libya, Anthony Gomez
General Submissions: Community and Population-based Materials
Population health as defined by Nash, Reifsnyder, Fabius & Pracilio (2011) is the "distribution of health outcomes within a population, the health determinants that influence distribution, and the policies and interventions that impact the determinants" (p. xxxv). Studying a health problem that affects the population would always lead to a better healthcare delivery system, promoting health services that are accessible, affordable, available, and acceptable.
