Using Reflective Writing As A Nursing Intervention: Review Of The Literature, Monica Kennison
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Over twenty years ago in a groundbreaking study, participants who engaged in an expressive writing intervention about emotionally-laden experiences showed positive changes in health outcomes when compared with those in a neutral writing control group. The effects lasted several weeks after the writing intervention concluded. Since then, a number of studies have indicated that written disclosure about stressful experiences improves measures of physical and mental health in clinical and non-clinical populations. For instance, expressive writing has been linked to: fewer physician visits, increases in T-helper cell growth, drops in blood pressure and heart rate, and improvements in mood. Additionally, writing …

Using The Thai-Human Papilloma Virus Belief Scale To Tailor Messages To Eligible Women: A Text Message Intervention, Mary Ann Picone
DNP and Student Works
Do women aged 18 to 26 years perceive themselves at risk for HPV disease and do they have the intentions to receive the HPV vaccine series as determined by Thai Human Papillomavirus Vaccine Belief Scale (Thai-HPVBS)? The Thai-HPVBS bases its questions upon the constructs in the Health Belief Model (Rosenstock, 1966) which examines variables which influence health behavior. In their roles as primary care providers nurse practitioners are able to provide the cue to action for women aged 18 to 26 years to consider receiving the HPV vaccine series. Understanding the intentions of women, aged 18 to 26 years guided …

The Impact Of Critical Thinking Upon Clinical Judgment During Simulation With Senior Nursing Students, Mary A. Cazzell, Mindi Anderson
Nursing Education Research Conference (NERC)
The purpose was to examine the impact of critical thinking (CT) upon clinical judgment (CJ) during pediatric medication administration. Objective Structured Clinical Evaluations (OSCE) with 160 pre-licensure baccalaureate senior-level nursing students. Nurse educators are now called to 'radically transform' teaching strategies from a focus on CT to CJ in order to bridge the education-practice gap. The problem of overlapping definitions of CT and CJ further confuses the direction of these teaching strategies.

The depth and breadth of a nurse's understanding within the context of care is vitally important to achieving successful patient outcomes. Nursing education is calling for the need for innovative and transformative strategies that guide nurses in the use of nursing knowledge and science. How nurses are educated and oriented to think in practice is receiving well-deserved attention in the literature. To that end, formal evaluation and dissemination of learning outcomes that validate the use of these transformative strategies is necessary. The purpose of this symposium is to engage educators in a dialogue …

Grading Rubrics: What's In It For Faculty?, Candice Phillips, Rachel Choudhury
Nursing Education Research Conference (NERC)
Session presented on: Friday, April 4, 2014:
Higher education literature recognizes the vital role that grading rubrics exert on improving student academic performance (Howell, 2011). As an assessment tool, rubrics allocate points to specific evaluative criteria to gauge student performance (Truemper, 2004). Benefits of rubric assessment have been noted to include: increased student understanding of instructor expectations (Oakleaf, 2008) and more meaningful grading experiences due to clearly stated evaluative criteria (Brescian, Zelna & Anderson, 2004). An analytic rubric, which allows for separate evaluation of each component of the assignment, has been shown to provide objective formative feedback to guide student …
