Skin-To-Skin Contact After Birth To Promote Newborns' Vital Stabilization: An Evidence-Based Project, Stephanie Bricker, Rachel Johnson, Caitlin Stom

Theses

The hours immediately following birth are a crucial time for an infant to sustain life. Skin-to-skin contact (SSC) during this time provides the infant with natural thermoregulation and promotes oxygenation. The purpose of this evidence-based project is to examine the physiological effects SSC has on full-term newborns. The research was centered around the PICOT question: In full term newborns, how does direct skin-to-skin contact, compared to no skin-to-skin contact, affect the stabilization of the infant as measured by the infant's vital signs, when practiced within the first few hours after birth?

Diabetes Educational Program, Djenane Bartholomew

DNP and Student Works

Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States, despite medical advancements (Centers for Disease Control [CDC], 2011). Diabetes management and education is the key to curtail the rapid spread of this disease. As American baby boomers age, the diagnoses of diabetes increase and cause the disease to reach epidemic proportions (King, Matheson, Chirina, & Shankar, 2013). A New York City nursing home conducted a needs assessment in 2013, which revealed an increase in the readmission of residents with diabetes or diabetes-related complications. These sobering facts led to the project question: Does a diabetes educational program in …

The Social Construction Of Medicalization Of Pregnancy And Childbirth, Mirko Prosen Oct 2015

The Social Construction Of Medicalization Of Pregnancy And Childbirth, Mirko Prosen

Sigma Foundation for Nursing Research Grant Reports

Pregnancy and childbirth in every society reflect societal values. During the last century (in Slovenia after World War II), medicine, medical interventions, and medical technology became indispensable elements of societal control over these otherwise natural phenomena. Based on Conrad and Schneiders' sequential model of medicalization, we can confirm that in Slovenia both pregnancy and childbirth are medicalized. This raises three questions that need to be answered: how do women experience and accept medicalization through their own pregnancy and birth experiences and what is their relationship towards natural childbirth; how do medical staff working in obstetrics clinics perceive and experience the …
