A Health System Approach To Evaluating Nurse Well-Being And Designing Interventions, Lee Galuska, Jessica Phillips, Kelley Anderson
Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)
In the wake of a global pandemic and societal stressors, clinician wellbeing and the threat of burnout are commanding increasing attention. Burnout contributes to nurse turnover and is threatening the ability of health systems to provide safe, high-quality care for patients (Dyrbye et al., 2017). The National Academy of Medicine (NAM) recommends a systems approach to prevent clinician burnout and promote professional wellbeing as healthy professionals are essential for achieving positive health care outcomes (NAM, 2019). Meaning and joy in nursing practice are contributors to professional wellbeing and are part of the solution for achieving the quadruple aim. One of …

Voices Of Emergency Department Nurses And Their Experiences Of Workplace Violence, Emily M. Holland, Elizabeth B. Dowdell
Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)
Background: Nurses in many healthcare facilities frequently feel unsafe and threatened due to workplace violence (WPV) which is a serious and persistent problem across the United States, (American Nurses Association, 2015; Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2019). While all nurses are at risk for experiencing WPV, the emergency department (ED) is considered an especially high risk unit due to factors such as the acuity of illness, traumatic events, victims of violence, and the 24/7/365 days open door policy, (Emergency Nurses Association, 2020; Morrison & Joy, 2016). Patients with substance use disorders (SUDs) generate unique challenges for ED nurses since …

Cultivating A Culture Of Civility In Healthcare, Clayton Edward Collins, John Michael Leger
Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)
Promoting civility in healthcare is necessary to provide safe, reliable, and effective patient care (Frankel et al., 2017). The consequences of incivility especially affect many aspects of care provision and are detrimental to a healthy work environment. The lasting effects of the COVID-19 pandemic have contributed to an increase of incivility in the workplace, and additional efforts to promote a culture of civility are paramount to enhancing patient care quality and staff psychological safety (El Ghaziri et al., 2022). Assessment of the work environment can reveal opportunities for improvement and more effective interventions to meet organizational needs (Harris et al., …

Influence Of Leadership Styles Upon Staff Well-Being: Strategies To Create A Healthy Work Environment, Alice Kohler, Kenn M. Kirksey, Stacie Marion
Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)
Background: Nurses comprise the largest segment of healthcare and are essential to the mission of creating a healthy work environment (Haddah, Annamaraju, & Toney-Butler, 2022). Global shortages have endangered nursing care delivery effectiveness and exacerbated nurses' stress, burnout and intent to leave their jobs (Tamata, Mohammadnezhad, & Tamani, 2021). Contributing factors include: 1) staff shortages; 2) workload; 3) no advancement opportunities; 4) physical and psychological job-associated risks; and 5) lack of leadership support (Tamata, Mohammadnezhad, & Tamani, 2021). Exploitive leadership styles often result in psychological detachment among direct reports (Majeed & Fatima, 2020). Researchers have inferred that management styles have …
