COVID vaccinations have been an important step in controlling the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the fact they were generally safe and effective, a few case reports of renal disorders have been published following COVID vaccines. We report a 29-year-old man with history of Chronic Kidney Disease who presented to our center with flank pain after receiving AstraZeneca COVID vaccine. He also had history of raw milk ingestion. His initial investigations showed high creatinine with high level of proteinuria. A renal biopsy was consistent with immune complex-mediated glomerulonephritis on top of renal fibrosis. His brucella serology also showed high titer. He was …

Apgar Values Lower Than 7 Associated With Mortality In Premature Newborns: A Retrospective Study, Nayeri Reyes-Saavedra, Patricia C. Castelán-Villagrana, Ivette Mata-Maqueda, Juan C. Solís-Sáinz
Saudi Medical Journal
Objectives: To determine the risk factors associated with mortality in premature newborns (PNB). Methods: An observational, descriptive, and retrospective study, carried out at the General Hospital of San Juan del Rio, Queretaro, Mexico. The medical records of PNB admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit from January until December 2018 were studied. Results: A total of 136 PNB were included (74 males and 62 females) of whom 16 (11.7%) died (9 males and 7 females). A correlation was observed between gestational age and birth weight with Apgar values at 1 and 5 minutes (r=0.37, p <0.001). A lower birth weight was found in premature infants with infectious diseases, as well as a lower gestational age in relation to respiratory diseases ( p <0.0001). The PNB with Apgar values lower than 7 points at 1 and 5 minutes were more likely to die ( p <0.0001). The PNB with very low birth weight (1-1.49 kg), with less than 28 weeks of gestation, and with infectious pathology showed more probabilities of dying ( p <0.05). Conclusion: Apgar values lower than 7 points in the PNB are associated with the presence of infectious diseases and mortality. Likewise, a lower gestational age represents a lower birth weight, with a higher risk for respiratory and infectious diseases, and consequently an elevated mortality.

Objectives: To study the prevalence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) after pandemic’s peak and before the vaccine enrollment in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and further explore predictors for SARS-CoV-2 positivity. Methods: A cross-sectional study of 515 blood donors from November 22 to December 17, 2020 was conducted at King Saud University Medical City, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia to look at SARS-CoV-2 immunoglobulin G (IgG) positivity. The participants were asked questions about their demographic characteristics, past SARS-CoV-2 infection, SARS-CoV-2-related symptoms and exposures. Results: The seroprevalence in our study was 12.2% (n=63/515). Being a non-citizen was associated with significantly higher seroprevalence …

Objectives: To optimize an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for measuring the HspX protein (α-crystallin) levels and then evaluate its correlation with the accumulation of lipid bodies in Mycobacterium bovis ( M. bovis) during hypoxia and exposure to nitric oxide. Methods: This study was conducted at Prince Sultan Military Medical City, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia between 2016 and 2017. We first optimized ELISA conditions for the detection of HspX. The optimization protocol focused on minimizing concentrations of the capture antibody, detection antibody, and conjugated secondary antibody, and determining the minimum detection limit of the antigen, HspX. Bacteria were grown either in shaking …

Objectives: To estimate the prevalence mono-resistant tuberculosis (MR-TB) and multidrug resistant TB (MDR-TB), and evaluate the risk factors associated with the drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB). Methods: A descriptive, retrospective study was applied, utilizing the TB patients’ medical records at King Fahd Armed Forces Hospital (KFAFH), Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The records of patients notified between 2000 and 2018 were reviewed and culture positive cases for Mycobacterium tuberculosis species were included. Moreover, the risk factors included were age, gender, smoking history, renal disease, liver disease, hyperbilirubinemia, diabetes mellitus, and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Results: Nine hundred and one cases in entirety were involved …

Objectives: To explore the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the development of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) symptoms and its correlation with the level of perceived stress among the Saudi population. Methods: In July 2020, a cross-sectional survey of 2909 participants in Saudi Arabia during the outbreak was conducted to collect data related to sociodemographic characteristics and scores on the Brief Obsessive-Compulsive Scale (BOCS) and Perceived Stress Scale (PSS). Results: Most participants were female (73.9%) with a university level of education or higher (81%). The prevalence of new-onset obsessions was 57.8%, compulsions 45.9%, and moderate/high perceived stress 72.4%. New-onset dirt, germs, …

Kawasaki disease is a vascular disorder of unknown etiology that affects children. Kawasaki disease mainly involves medium-sized blood vessels and may cause cardiovascular complications, particularly coronary artery aneurysms. Concern has been raised against various types of vaccines becoming potential risk factors for Kawasaki disease. Here, we describe a case of a 4-month-old Saudi infant who presented with incomplete Kawasaki disease a few hours after receiving his hexavalent vaccine and there was a significant dilatation of all coronary arteries. Although a relationship between vaccinations and Kawasaki disease has been suggested, there is no strong evidence of an increased risk or causal …
