Brucella endocarditis is a rare but fatal complication of Brucellosis, it causes destructive valvular lesions. The aortic valve is the most common affected site. We present a case of Brucella endocarditis with aortic root abscess, the patient received a prolonged combination of antibiotic therapy, and underwent aortic valve replacement. After one and a half years of follow up, the patient is still without signs of recurrence. The high mortality in Brucella endocarditis can be overcome by early diagnosis and aggressive therapy.

Respiratory syncytial virus RSV, a nonsegmented, single stranded ribonucleic acid virus, infects one-half of all infants within the first year of life. Respiratory syncytial virus possesses pathogenetic qualities that may be attributed to the interplay of viral and host-specific factors including virus strains of different virulence, size of the inoculum, family history of asthma or airway hyper-reactivity and immunologic anomalies of the host. Inflammatory cell recruitment and activation occur in response to RSV infection of epithelial cells. Epithelial cells initiate the inflammatory response to RSV by elaborating a wide variety of cytokines and chemokines that trigger further inflammatory responses. Treatment …

In health care today, scientific and technological frontiers are expanding at unprecedented rates, even as economic and financial pressures shrink profit margins, intensify competition, and constrain the funds available for investment. Therefore, the world today has more economic, and social opportunities for people than 10 or 100 years since globalization has created a new ground somewhat characterized by rapid economic transformation, deregulation of national markets by new trade regimes, amazing transport, electronic communication possibilities and high turnover of foreign investment and capital flow as well as skilled labor. These trends can easily mask great inequalities in developing countries such as …

The human immunodeficiency virus HIV type 1 has evolved as one of the most important global infectious pathogens. Although the virus had initially emerged among certain high risk groups in developed countries, it quickly gained momentum in developing countries threatening most population groups. The first case of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was diagnosed in 1984. Twenty years later, by the end of 2003, 1509 patients have been reported to have acquired HIV 1. The majority of the early infected patients have acquired HIV 1 from blood product transfusion. Subsequently, the most prevalent mode of transmission …

Isolation Versus Quarantine And Alternative Measures To Control Emerging Infectious Diseases, Fahad A. Al-Ateeg
Saudi Medical Journal
In the past 25 years, the world has witnessed the emergence and re-emergence of many infectious diseases. In the early stages of their emergence, isolation and quarantine may be the only and last resort to effectively control infectious diseases when we are confronted with limited or no knowledge of a newly identified and previously unknown contagious disease, which causes a serious public health threat either locally or internationally. The article traces back the origins of isolation and quarantine; defines precisely the terms isolation and quarantine as they are currently used in the modern era; compare and contrast these terms; identifies …

Salmonellosis And Ulcerative Colitis. A Causal Relationship Or Just A Coincidence, Ali O. Karaoglu, Vahit Yukselen, Gunay T. Ertem, Muhan Erkus
Saudi Medical Journal
Coincidence of salmonellosis and ulcerative colitis is a rare clinical problem. Salmonella infection was reported to complicate the ulcerative colitis, as either facilitating its occurrence or activation. In this article, we present a case with salmonellosis whose clinicopathological findings also suggested ulcerative colitis. The patient improved rapidly after taking additional mesalazine to norfloxacin treatment. We conclude that salmonella infection might have either been coincidentally present or might have triggered an early ulcerative colitis in this patient who did not have history of inflammatory bowel diseases. In case of persistent severe diarrhea despite appropriate treatment, the possibility of a coincident inflammatory …
