Ethical Guidelines In Genetics And Genomics. An Islamic Perspective, Aida I. Al-Aqeel
Ethical Guidelines In Genetics And Genomics. An Islamic Perspective, Aida I. Al-Aqeel
Saudi Medical Journal
We are at a time of unprecedented increase in knowledge of rapidly changing technology. Such biotechnology especially when it involves human subjects raises complex ethical, legal, social and religious issues. A World Health Organization expert consultation concluded that "genetics advances will only be acceptable if their application is carried out ethically, with due regard to autonomy, justice, education and the beliefs and resources of each nation and community." Public health authorities are increasingly concerned by the high rate of births with genetic disorders especially in developing countries where Muslims are a majority. Therefore, it is imperative to scrutinize the available …

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate immunity against measles and its relation with some variables among healthy subjects in 3 cities in Turkey. METHODS: We carried out a cross-sectional study on measles antibody titers in the serum samples of 712 people from Antalya, 696 from Diyarbakir and 667 from Samsun, Turkey using particle agglutination test between February 2000 and October 2001. The study groups, informed and asked for their consent by midwives, consisted of randomly selected subjects of all ages older than 6 months. We implemented the study in 3 steps: physical examination, interview and blood collection. RESULTS: We considered titers of >=1:16 …

A Rare Presentation Of Hydatid Cyst, Nuran Sabir, Basak Yildirim, Banu Cetin, Mustafa Sengul, Erkan Alatas
Saudi Medical Journal
Hydatid disease, although known to occur in most body areas, is extremely rare in the female reproductive system. There are different modes of presentation for the disease; however, we report and discuss a case presented with cystic vesicles passing through the vagina, which is considered as a rare presentation for secondary involvement of the uterus and both ovaries. We confirmed diagnosis with radiological examinations and serological tests. We operated on the patient, and studied the excised cysts microscopically. The gynecologist should be aware of hydatid cyst when vaginally passing a grape like vesicle is presented by the patient.

OBJECTIVE: We determined the antibiotic sensitivities of uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) strains isolated from the urine of patients who have recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs). METHODS: Our study was carried out between November 2000 and January 2002 at the Infectious Diseases Clinic, Istanbul Haydarpasa Numune Hospital, Istanbul, Turkey. We compared the virulence factors (fimbrial adhesion, hemolysin production, motility property) of 50 strains of Escherichia coli (E. coli) isolated from urine with the same properties of 25 strains of E. coli isolated from stool specimens of healthy individuals. In addition, we detected the virulence factors of UPEC strains using a microbiological …

OBJECTIVE: Toxoplasma is a globally distributed pathogen for humans and animals. In situations of immunodeficiency, Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) emerges as a life-threatening infection. Toxoplasma gondii is transmitted parenterally, flourish in state immunosuppression and, most toxoplasma infections are asymptomatic. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the prevalence of anti-T. gondii antibodies in hemodialysis patients with chronic renal failure. We undertook a prospective study of our maintenance hemodialysis patients to determine whether these sources posed a risk for transmission of T. gondii. METHODS: This study was carried out on patients undergoing regular hemodialysis in the dialysis units (Hemodialysis Center …

Asymptomatic Pons Tuberculoma In An Infant With Miliary Tuberculosis, Gulnar Uysal, Tugba Gursoy, Umut Altunc, Akif Guven
Saudi Medical Journal
Miliary tuberculosis is caused by the hematogenous spread of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and consists of 1.5% of all tuberculosis cases. It is seen mostly in infants because of the immature immune system, and central nervous system CNS involvement is not rare. Tuberculomas are rarely seen in the localized form of CNS tuberculosis, and only 4% are localized in the brain stem. We report a 4.5-month-old infant who deteriorated during follow-up with the diagnosis of cytomegalovirus pneumonia, and afterwards received the diagnosis of miliary tuberculosis. Although the baby had no neurologic abnormality and cerebrospinal fluid findings were normal, cranial MRI revealed contrast …

Disseminated Candida Albicans Infection In An Immunocompetent Host, Tarig S. Al-Khuwaitir, Suphia M. Sherbeeni, Abdurahman M. Al-Mogheiri, Mohammed N. Al-Oumi
Saudi Medical Journal
Candida albicans CA is an opportunistic fungus, which lives in close association with its human host. Immuno-competence is the barrier to its tendency to invade. Normal skin, commensal bacteria and neutrophils are the first hurdles and once broken down by indwelling catheters, antibiotics or ablative chemotherapies, dissemination can occur with grave consequences. We describe a young patient with apparent full immune competence, who suffered from disseminated CA infection, her presentation, diagnosis and therapy with amphotericin B deoxycholate, which lead to her complete recovery and return to a productive life.
