Exploring Low Birth Weight In The Metro Atlanta Area Using The Urban Institute’S Social Mobility Dashboard, Jason Davis, David Pena, Lisa Holland-Davis
The Journal of Public and Professional Sociology
Infant birth weight is the foundation for childhood and adult health outcomes, and health, according to the Urban Institute, is an important predictor of upward social mobility. Prior studies have found that infants with low birth weight are susceptible to a host of physical, cognitive, and social deficiencies that can adversely impact the ability to achieve upward mobility. The current study utilizes the Urban Institute's Mobility Metrics to explore low infant birth rates among the 11 counties that comprise the Metro Atlanta area. We focus on the average rate of low birth weight from 2021-2023 overall and disaggregated by mothers’ …

Background/Objectives: Antimicrobial resistance in pediatric infections presents a worsening global public health challenge, with antimicrobial resistance (AMR) accounting for more than one million deaths annually and disproportionately affecting children younger than 5 years of age. Neonates and critically ill children face heightened risk owing to immature immunity, frequent healthcare exposures, and limited therapeutic options. This review synthesizes evidence on the epidemiology, mechanisms of resistance, clinical outcomes, and management of AMR across the full pediatric age range. Methods: PubMed/MEDLINE and Google Scholar were searched for literature from 2014 to 2026 using terms covering antibiotic resistance, pediatric populations, and key …
How Do Veterans Describe Their Experiences With Homelessness In Rural Areas Within Virginia?, V'Tessa J. Watson
How Do Veterans Describe Their Experiences With Homelessness In Rural Areas Within Virginia?, V'Tessa J. Watson
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Homelessness is a complex issue affecting individuals across the United States and can be understood as a significant public health concern. Veterans are not exempt from this crisis; in fact, veteran homelessness has increased nationwide since the pandemic. In Virginia alone, it is estimated that over 400 veterans are experiencing homelessness, although this figure remains approximate. Previous studies have failed to incorporate veterans’ perspectives on this issue; therefore, the purpose of this phenomenological study is to describe veterans' experiences of homelessness in rural areas throughout Virginia.
Twelve veterans participated in this study, which employed a semi-structured interview approach. A criterion …

Oncogenic viruses cause high-risk cancers in humans and are responsible for nearly 20% of all cancer cases worldwide. Currently, very limited data exist in the realm of wastewater-based viral epidemiology (WBE) for cancer-causing viruses, with existing studies using targeted approaches (i.e., PCR-based approaches) that lack genomic resolution. In this study, we used a hybrid-capture approach to detect, filter, and sequence all known oncogenic virus signals from wastewater samples collected over 3 years (May 2022-May 2025) in 16 Texas cities, covering nearly 25% of the state's population. Once sequenced, we used custom computational tools designed for wastewater metagenomics to assign reads …

Adaptive Intervention Strategies In Co-Evolving Multiplex Networks: A Reinforcement Learning Approach To Real-Time Misinformation Containment, Anjali Ashokrao Bhadre Dr., Harshvardhan Prabhakar Ghongade Dr.
Northeast Journal of Complex Systems (NEJCS)
The growing transmission of misinformation via social media creates serious challenges to public health, democracy and social cohesion. To date, methods used to contain misinformation rely upon static representations of networks and set rules for interventions. In contrast, this study presents the first Multiplex Adaptive Reinforcement Intervention Network (MARIN), a framework for real-time adaptive intervention in the context of dynamic misinformation transmission using co-evolving multiplex networks and deep reinforcement learning. Unlike past studies that have assumed static network structures, MARIN has the ability to allow for dynamic changes in network topology as a result of both misinformation transmission and intervention …

Vaginitis is one of the most common women's health problems, and its severity increases in pregnant women with gestational diabetes due to higher susceptibility to infection and increased rates of antibiotic resistance. The research problem: The increasing prevalence of multidrug-resistant isolates of Klebsiella pneumoniae and its association with AcrAB-TolC ejaculation pumps limits treatment efficacy, while the effect of green-method nanoparticles on gene expression of these pumps remains unclear. This paper aimed to detect the acrA and acrB genes in K. pneumoniae isolates and evaluate the effect of zinc oxide nanoparticles prepared with garlic and rosemary extracts on their gene expression. …

Background/aim: Parenteral feeding is used in critically ill patients when enteral nutrition is inadequate or intolerable, and the gastrointestinal tract is not functioning properly. Lipid emulsions play a major role in parenteral nutrition because they supply necessary fatty acids and a high-calorie density. We investigated the effects of parenteral lipid emulsions on mesenteric perfusion, inflammation-induced oxidation, and organ damage in lipopolysaccharide-induced mice endotoxemia model.
Materials and methods: In septic mice, organ damage induced by lipopolysaccharide was assessed by histopathology and biochemical examination. Additionally, an ultrasonic blood flowmeter was used to measure the impact of lipid emulsions on mesenteric blood flow. …

Hand hygiene is the cornerstone of infection prevention in healthcare settings and is particularly critical in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) where patients are highly vulnerable due to immature immune systems and frequent exposure to invasive procedures. Healthcare associated infections (HAIs) remain a significant cause of morbidity and mortality among neonates. Evidence consistently identifies proper hand hygiene as the single most effective intervention to reduce HAIs in NICUs. Despite its simplicity, compliance among healthcare workers is often suboptimal, influenced by factors such as workload and accessibility of hand hygiene resources.

Background: Infective endocarditis (IE) results from bacterial adhesion to endocardial tissue and valvular apparatus. While viridans group streptococci and Enterococcus species are associated with subacute disease, Staphylococcus aureus, including methicillin-resistant strains (MRSA), is a leading cause of more acutely destructive presentations. The entry of these pathogens can occur through surgical and dental procedures, intravenous drug use, or less apparent etiology. Classic peripheral stigmata (Osler nodes, Janeway lesions, splinter hemorrhages, Roth spots) are now uncommon but clinically meaningful. Current guidelines emphasize rapid multimodality imaging to detect cerebral and systemic emboli in symptomatic IE. We present a 50-year-old man with S. aureus …

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: HIV-1-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND) manifest in 15% to 50% of people with HIV, impairing learning and memory and executive function. The chronic generation of HIV-1 Transactivator of transcription (Tat) likely contributes to HAND via direct neuronal toxicity and glial-mediated toxicity. This review summarizes our current understanding of how chronic Tat generation from microglia and astrocytes promote glutamate excitotoxicity.
RECENT FINDINGS: In recent years, the indirect effects of Tat through the activation of glial cells have gained significant interest. This review highlights microglia and astrocytes as HIV-1 reservoirs that release Tat protein in the central nervous system. Specific …

Escaping Quarantine: Marine Hospitals, The Constitution Act, 1867 And Canada’S First Federal Health Care Program, Dan Dwyre
Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies
Previous scholarship has argued that the enumeration of marine hospitals as a federal head of power in the Constitution Act, 1867 reflected a national concern over immigration and quarantine. This article disputes that. Using primary sources, this paper demonstrates that Canadian marine hospitals were established in port communities to provide for the general health of itinerant merchant sailors, who would otherwise be a burden on local hospitals and charitable organizations. The article concludes that marine hospitals can be viewed in retrospect as one of Canada’s first federal health care programs.

Aid As Leverage: How Humanitarian Assistance Shapes The Health Power Dynamics In Eastern Democratic Republic Of Congo, Emmanuella K. Mbuyu
University Honors Theses
This paper examines humanitarian aid in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, where it serves as both relief and a force reshaping local power dynamics within ongoing conflict. Humanitarian organizations provide essential services in contexts of state collapse, but aid delivery is deeply embedded in systems of coercion, negotiation, and external influence. Drawing on critical humanitarianism and the aid economy, this study analyzes how humanitarian access is negotiated, how donor priorities shape definitions of need, and how temporary interventions create dependency and instability. The paper explores how humanitarian action can reinforce alternative structures of authority, particularly in weak or absent …

Gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma is an indolent extranodal B-cell lymphoma that arises in close association with chronic Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection and represents a unique paradigm of infection-driven oncogenesis. Persistent H. pylori colonization induces organized lymphoid tissue within the normally lymphoid-poor gastric mucosa, promoting sustained antigen-dependent T-cell-mediated B-cell proliferation and eventual clonal transformation. In contrast to many other lymphoid malignancies, early-stage gastric MALT lymphoma often regresses following microbial eradication, highlighting the central role of antigenic stimulation in disease pathogenesis. This review provides a contemporary overview of H. pylori-associated gastric MALT lymphoma, integrating epidemiology, molecular …
