Fast Transactive Control For Frequency Regulation In Smart Grids With Demand Response And Energy Storage, Andrew Ly, Saeid Bashash
Fast Transactive Control For Frequency Regulation In Smart Grids With Demand Response And Energy Storage, Andrew Ly, Saeid Bashash
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
This paper proposes a framework for controlling grid frequency by engaging the generation-side and demand-side resources simultaneously, via a fast transactive control approach. First, we use a proportional frequency-price relation to build and analyze a transactive frequency droop controller for a single-area power grid. Then, we develop a transactive demand response system by incorporating a large population of thermostatically controlled air conditioning loads. A proportional-integral controller is used to adjust the setpoint temperature of the air conditioners based on price variations. A battery storage system is then developed and augmented to the system to capture the energy arbitrage effects. A …

Meteorological Profiling In The Fire Environment Using Uas, Matthew J. Brewer, Craig B. Clements
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
With the increase in commercially available small unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), new observations in extreme environments are becoming more obtainable. One such application is the fire environment, wherein measuring both fire and atmospheric properties are challenging. The Fire and Smoke Model Evaluation Experiment offered the unique opportunity of a large controlled wildfire, which allowed measurements that cannot generally be taken during an active wildfire. Fire–atmosphere interactions have typically been measured from stationary instrumented towers and by remote sensing systems such as lidar. Advances in UAS and compact meteorological instrumentation have allowed for small moving weather stations that can move with …
A Micro-Scale Analysis Of Cycling Demand, Safety, And Network Quality, Sherry Ryan, Ana Garate, Diane Foote
A Micro-Scale Analysis Of Cycling Demand, Safety, And Network Quality, Sherry Ryan, Ana Garate, Diane Foote
Mineta Transportation Institute
This research uses a unique database of cycling volumes from the San Diego region to estimate cycling demand and cycling collision models. Continuous cycling count data collected from 34 automated counters are used to extrapolate over 1,400 short duration counts to average annual daily bicycle volumes (AADB). Network characteristics, built environment, and socio-economic characteristics are primary independent variables employed in the modeling. A key contribution of this research is to incorporate both a whole-network measure (betweenness centrality) and a network quality measure (LTS) in estimating cycling volumes. This research also improves upon cycling risk assessment by using more rigorous exposure …

Mineta Transportation Institute
The intent of this study is to assess the readiness, resourcing, and structure of public transit agencies to identify, protect from, detect, respond to, and recover from cybersecurity vulnerabilities and threats. Given the multitude of connected devices already in use by the transit industry and the vast amount of data generated (with more coming online soon), the transit industry is vulnerable to malicious cyber-attack and other cybersecurity-related threats. This study reviews the state of best cybersecurity practices in public surface transit; outlines U.S. public surface transit operators’ cybersecurity operations; assesses U.S. policy on cybersecurity in public surface transportation; and provides …

Automatic Traffic Monitoring And Management For Pedestrian And Cyclist Safety Using Deep Learning And Artificial Intelligence, Mohammad Pourhomayoun
Mineta Transportation Institute
In this project, we have designed and developed an effective end-to-end system based on advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI), machine learning, and computer vision to automatically monitor, detect, track, and count pedestrians and bicyclists. The main objective of this project is to improve the safety of pedestrians and bicyclists, by applying self-sensed and AI-powered systems to monitor and control the flow of pedestrians/bicyclists. The developed system includes algorithms for detecting the pedestrians and bicyclists, as well as algorithms for tracking and counting the pedestrians. We evaluated the developed system on real videos captured by actual traffic cameras in the city of …

Will Ride-Hailing Enhance Mobility For Older Adults? A California Survey, Asha Weinstein Agrawal, Manish Shirgaokar, Aditi Misra, Martin Wachs, Bonnie Dobbs
Mineta Transportation Institute
Ride-hailing services such as Lyft and Uber offer a potential mobility option for the growing numbers of aging Californians who risk social and economic isolation if they cannot drive for health or financial reasons. They could also serve older adults who currently have mobility options but would prefer a ride-hailing alternative for at least some trips.
This study addressed whether and how older Californians use ride-hailing, as well as the potential of this travel mode to meet the needs of older adults now and in the coming decade. An online survey was completed by 2,917 California adults aged 55 and …

The Altamont Pass commuter survey study examines commuters’ perceptions and behaviors towards public transportation during 2019-2020. Results are compared with surveys conducted in 2000 and 2006 to investigate whether there have been any longitudinal changes in the perceptions and behaviors of Altamont Pass commuters over the twenty-year interval. As the previous surveys do, this study focuses on the same three counties, namely, San Joaquin, Stanislaus, and Merced that comprise the Northern San Joaquin Valley (NSJV). When compared with the previous surveys, these findings reveal some significant differences of responses to most questions, and minor differences of responses to other questions, …

Find Me If You Can: Aligning Users In Different Social Networks, Priyanka Kasbekar, Katerina Potika, Chris Pollett
Faculty Publications, Computer Science
Online Social Networks allow users to share experiences with friends and relatives, make announcements, find news and jobs, and more. Several have user bases that number in the hundred of millions and even billions. Very often many users belong to multiple social networks at the same time under possibly different user names. Identifying a user from one social network on another social network gives information about a user's behavior on each platform, which in turn can help companies perform graph mining tasks, such as community detection and link prediction. The process of identifying or aligning users in multiple networks is …
