Safe Routes to School (SRTS) programs aim to increase the share of students who commute to school by active modes (e.g., walking and cycling). The goal of this work was to assess the effectiveness of SRTS programs. Towards that end, we analyzed the California Household Travel Survey (CHTS) data from the four counties in the San Francisco Bay area. We estimated logistic regression model(s) to predict the likelihood that a child commutes to school by active modes based on the presence of an SRTS program and controlling for individual, household, and tract characteristics. Findings indicate that longer trip distance and …

Visualizing Strange Metallic Correlations In The Two-Dimensional Fermi-Hubbard Model With Artificial Intelligence, Ehsan Khatami, Elmer Guardado-Sanchez, Benjamin M. Spar, Juan Felipe Carrasquilla, Waseem S. Bakr, Richard T. Scalettar

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Strongly correlated phases of matter are often described in terms of straightforward electronic patterns. This has so far been the basis for studying the Fermi-Hubbard model realized with ultracold atoms. Here, we show that artificial intelligence (AI) can provide an unbiased alternative to this paradigm for phases with subtle, or even unknown, patterns. Long- A nd short-range spin correlations spontaneously emerge in filters of a convolutional neural network trained on snapshots of single atomic species. In the less well-understood strange metallic phase of the model, we find that a more complex network trained on snapshots of local moments produces an …

Keck Cosmic Web Imager (Kcwi) Spectra Of Globular Clusters And Ultracompact Dwarfs In The Halo Of M87, Duncan A. Forbes, Anna Ferre-Mateu, Mark Durre, Jean P. Brodie, Aaron J. Romanowsky

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Using the Keck Cosmic Web Imager, we obtain spectra of several globular clusters (GCs), ultracompact dwarfs (UCDs), and the inner halo starlight of M87, at a similar projected galactocentric radius of ∼5 kpc. This enables us, for the first time, to apply the same stellar population analysis to the GCs, UCDs, and starlight consistently to derive ages, metallicities, and alpha-element abundances in M87. We find evidence for a dual stellar population in the M87 halo light, i.e. an ∼80 per cent component by mass that is old and metal-rich and a ∼20 per cent component that is old but metal-poor. …
