Relative Impacts Of Different Grade Scales On Student Success In Introductory Physics, David J. Webb, Cassandra A. Paul, Mary A. Chessey

Faculty Publications

In deciding on a student’s grade in a class, an instructor generally needs to combine many individual grading judgments into one overall judgment. Two relatively common numerical scales used to specify individual grades are the 4-point scale (where each whole number 0–4 corresponds to a letter grade) and the percent scale (where letter grades A through D are uniformly distributed in the top 40% of the scale). This paper uses grading data from a single series of courses offered over a period of 10 years to show that the grade distributions emerging from these two grade scales differed in many …

Such messages are also received by people with visual impairment and would require a certain information literacy capability for them to choose and filter these offers. This study attempts to dig information on how the visually impaired people would perceive loan/financial offers received from SMS and e-mails. We use a descriptive method with qualitative data extracted from in-depth interviews of the respondents. The respondents are visually impaired people that …

Machine Learning Discovery Of Computational Model Efficacy Boundaries, Michael S. Murillo, Mathieu Marciante, Liam G. Stanton

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Computational models are formulated in hierarchies of variable fidelity, often with no quantitative rule for defining the fidelity boundaries. We have constructed a dataset from a wide range of atomistic computational models to reveal the accuracy boundary between higher-fidelity models and a simple, lower-fidelity model. The symbolic decision boundary is discovered by optimizing a support vector machine on the data through iterative feature engineering. This data-driven approach reveals two important results: (i) a symbolic rule emerges that is independent of the algorithm, and (ii) the symbolic rule provides a deeper understanding of the fidelity boundary. Specifically, our dataset is composed …
