Convenient Tail Bounds For Sums Of Random Tensors, Shih Yu Chang, Wen Wei Lin Jun 2022

Convenient Tail Bounds For Sums Of Random Tensors, Shih Yu Chang, Wen Wei Lin

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

This work prepares new probability bounds for sums of random, inde-pendent, Hermitian tensors. These probability bounds characterize large-deviation behavior of the extreme eigenvalue of the sums of random tensors. We extend Laplace transform method and Lieb’s concavity theorem from matrices to tensors, and apply these tools to generalize the classical bounds associated with the names Chernoff, Ben-nett, and Bernstein from the scalar to the tensor setting. Tail bounds for the norm of a sum of random rectangular tensors are also derived from corollaries of random Hermitian tensors cases. The proof mechanism can also be applied to tensor-valued martingales and tensor-based …

Oceanic Zircon Records Extreme Fractional Crystallization Of Morb To Rhyolite On The Alarcon Rise Mid-Ocean Ridge, Ryan Portner, Brian M. Dreyer, David A. Clague, Nathan R. Daczko, Paterno R. Castillo

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

The first known occurrence of rhyolite along the submarine segments of the mid-ocean ridge (MOR) system was discovered on Alarcon Rise, the northernmost segment of the East Pacific Rise (EPR), by the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute in 2012. Zircon trace element and Hf and O isotope patterns indicate that the rhyolite formed by extreme crystal fractionation of primary mid-ocean ridge basalt (MORB) sourced from normal to enriched MOR mantle with little to no addition of continental lithosphere or hydrated oceanic crust. A large range in zircon ϵHf spanning 11 ϵ units is comparable to the range of whole rock …

Broadcast Dimension Of Graphs, Jesse Geneson, Eunjeong Yi Jun 2022

Broadcast Dimension Of Graphs, Jesse Geneson, Eunjeong Yi

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

In this paper we initiate the study of broadcast dimension, a variant of metric dimension. Let G be a graph with vertex set V (G), and let d(u, w) denote the length of a u − w geodesic in G. For k ≥ 1, let dk (x, y) = min{d(x, y), k +1}. A function f: V (G) → Z+ ∪{0} is called a resolving broadcast of G if, for any distinct x, y ∈ V (G), there exists a vertex [Formula Presented]. The broadcast dimension, bdim(G), of G is the minimum of [Formula Presented] over all resolving broadcasts of …

New Efficient Approach To Solve Big Data Systems Using Parallel Gauss–Seidel Algorithms, Shih Yu Chang, Hsiao Chun Wu, Yifan Wang Jun 2022

New Efficient Approach To Solve Big Data Systems Using Parallel Gauss–Seidel Algorithms, Shih Yu Chang, Hsiao Chun Wu, Yifan Wang

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

In order to perform big-data analytics, regression involving large matrices is often necessary. In particular, large scale regression problems are encountered when one wishes to extract semantic patterns for knowledge discovery and data mining. When a large matrix can be processed in its factorized form, advantages arise in terms of computation, implementation, and data-compression. In this work, we propose two new parallel iterative algorithms as extensions of the Gauss–Seidel algorithm (GSA) to solve regression problems involving many variables. The convergence study in terms of error-bounds of the proposed iterative algorithms is also performed, and the required computation resources, namely time-and …

Marine protected area (MPA) designs, including large-scale MPAs (LSMPAs; >150,000 km2), mobile MPAs (fluid spatiotemporal boundaries), and MPA networks, may offer different benefits to species and could enhance protection by encompassing spatiotemporal scales of animal movement. We sought to understand how well LSMPAs could benefit nine highly-mobile marine species in the tropics now and into the future by: 1) evaluating current range overlap within a LSMPA; 2) evaluating range overlap under climate change projections; and 3) evaluating how well theoretical MPA designs benefit these nine species. We focused on Palmyra Atoll and Kingman Reef, a 2000 km2 area within the …

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Extreme precipitation poses a major challenge for local governments, including the City and County of San Francisco, California, as flooding can damage and destroy infrastructure and property. As the climate continues to warm, reliable future precipitation projections are needed to provide the best possible information to decision makers. However, future changes in the magnitude of extreme precipitation are uncertain, as current state-of-the-art global climate models are typically run at relatively coarse horizontal resolutions that require the use of convective parameterization and have difficulty simulating observed extreme rainfall rates. Here, we performed ensembles of convection-permitting regional climate model simulations to investigate …

Meta-Algorithms In Machine Learning, Vishnu Pendyala

Open Educational Resources

This presentation explores how to make the best of models impacted by bias and variance. Meta-learning minimizes loss. Ensemble methods, including Bagging, Adaboost, Random Forest, Gradient Boosting, and Stacking, are discussed. These methods perturb data (X or Y) using techniques like bootstrap sampling, k-fold sampling, weighted sampling, and random subspaces. Models are generated in parallel or sequentially, with aggregation strategies such as mean, mode, weighted response, and metamodel. The presentation also touches upon deep learning and one-shot learning, and explains how distances become less meaningful in high dimensions.

The Role Of Ions In Irradiated Astrophysical O2 Ice, Kristen J. Darnell May 2022

The Role Of Ions In Irradiated Astrophysical O2 Ice, Kristen J. Darnell

Master's Theses

Cosmic ices contain ions produced by irradiation from cosmic rays and UVphotons, yet solid-phase ion-ice reactions are currently ignored in all astrochemical models, even though gas-phase ion-molecule reactions are arguably the single-most important class of reactions in astrochemistry. Thus, developing a model that includes solid-phase ion-ice reactions is essential to accurately model interstellar ice chemistry, especially given the recent launch of the James Webb Space Telescope. To fill this gap, we have compiled a solid-phase chemical network for use in a rate-based irradiated ice astrochemical model which, for the first time, includes ionic species produced via the photoionization of the …

The Influence Of Happiness On The Perception Of Ingroup And Outgroup Stereotypes, Diego R. Gómez

Master's Theses

An important social issue that influences judgments between ingroups and outgroups is how moods influence stereotype judgments. For instance, research on moods has provided evidence that happiness increases stereotype judgments. However, research has not considered the impact of individuals’ ingroup membership and how it may moderate these effects. The purpose of this study was to explore the potential moderating role that ingroup membership may have on the effects of happiness on stereotype judgments. University student participants in a happy or neutral induced mood completed a disciplinary task to assess guilt of either a Hispanic or non-Hispanic suspect of an assault …

Steric Effect On Benzyl Ether Olefines Under Sadmet Polymerization, Su Hu May 2022

Steric Effect On Benzyl Ether Olefines Under Sadmet Polymerization, Su Hu

Master's Theses

Acyclic diene metathesis (ADMET) polymerization, a type of olefin cross metathesis, is a step-growth and condensation polymerization that can be used to synthesize hydrocarbon polymers with diverse functional groups. Traditional ADMET with symmetric α,ω-dienes is not selective and can only form homopolymers or statistical copolymers. Changing to monomers with acrylate functional groups allows selective reactivity to form block and alternating polymers. In this project, we want to explore other functional groups that result in selective reactivity to form advanced polymer architectures via what we have termed selective acyclic diene metathesis (SADMET) polymerization. Developing new functionalized monomers for SADMET polymerization allows …

Mechanical Stabilization By Cyclic Compression Of Composite Polymer Electrolytes For Lithium-Ion Batteries, Nishad Mulay May 2022

Mechanical Stabilization By Cyclic Compression Of Composite Polymer Electrolytes For Lithium-Ion Batteries, Nishad Mulay

Master's Theses

Composite polymer electrolytes (CPEs) for lithium-ion batteries provide an effectivebalance of ionic conductivity, mechanical robustness, and safety. Loss of charge capacity, however, is caused by multiple contributing factors, such as dendrite formation, changes in polymer crystallization, and reconfiguration of porous electrodes. In this thesis we specifically examine mechanical changes in the composite electrolyte layer. The hypothesis of this investigation is that the addition of rigid particles to a polymer electrolyte counteracts the fatigue softening effect caused by cyclic dimensional changes, as would be experienced during charge and discharge cycles. We apply cyclic compression to mimic stress cycling that is caused …
