Abstract

An institution cannot exist and function properly without the presence of a library because the services provided by an academic library reflect the quality of the institution. This paper attempts to present a brief overview of the concept of library, research data, Research Data Management (RDM) and its constraints as well as the roles of academic libraries. These roles has experienced new paradigm shift, unprecedented reshaping and alterations as a result of emerging waves of information communication technology (ICT) and its accompanying sustainable and disruptive technologies. Scholars are now producing, storing and disseminating digital data in much larger volumes …

Cooperative Filtering And Parameter Identification For Advection-Diffusion Processes Using A Mobile Sensor Network, Jie You, Ziqiao Zhang, Fumin Zhang, Wencen Wu

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

This article presents an online parameter identification scheme for advection-diffusion processes using data collected by a mobile sensor network. The advection-diffusion equation is incorporated into the information dynamics associated with the trajectories of the mobile sensors. A constrained cooperative Kalman filter is developed to provide estimates of the field values and gradients along the trajectories of the mobile sensors so that the temporal variations in the field values can be estimated. This leads to a co-design scheme for state estimation and parameter identification for advection-diffusion processes that is different from comparable schemes using sensors installed at fixed spatial locations. Using …

How Ethnic Studies Faculty Use Streaming Video: Instructional Needs, Applications, And Challenges, Keri Prelitz, Nick Szydlowski, Mantra Roy, Anthony Davis, Ann Agee, Emily K. Chan

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

While there have been studies on faculty use of streaming video resources in academic libraries, none have focused on the specific needs of ethnic studies faculty. Using a thematic analysis of semi-structured interviews with 13 ethnic studies faculty from two public university campuses, this study found that faculty engagement with video is based upon a pedagogical strategy that responds to the specific demands and goals of ethnic studies curricula, while centering on student needs by using free resources whenever possible. Within this paradigm, faculty choose from three categories of content: key primary and secondary sources; flexible supporting sources; and current …

Moral Economies For Water: A Framework For Analyzing Norms Of Justice, Economic Behavior, And Social Enforcement In The Contexts Of Water Inequality, Melissa Beresford, Amber Wutich, Dustin Garrick, Georgina Drew Mar 2023

Moral Economies For Water: A Framework For Analyzing Norms Of Justice, Economic Behavior, And Social Enforcement In The Contexts Of Water Inequality, Melissa Beresford, Amber Wutich, Dustin Garrick, Georgina Drew

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Over the past two decades, scholars have invoked E. P. Thompson's and James Scott's concept of a “moral economy” to explain how people mobilize notions of justice to make claims to water. We draw together 20 years of literature to assess the state-of-the-art present in research on moral economies for water. We trace the historical foundations of the moral economies concept and its relevance to water; define the three basic components of a moral economy for water—(1) shared understandings of justice, (2) normative economic practices, (3) social pressure mechanisms—and provide examples of how they manifest globally. We then discuss how …

Prediction Of State Of Health Of Lithium-Ion Battery Using Health Index Informed Attention Model, Yupeng Wei Mar 2023

Prediction Of State Of Health Of Lithium-Ion Battery Using Health Index Informed Attention Model, Yupeng Wei

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

State-of-health (SOH) is a measure of a battery’s capacity in comparison to its rated capacity. Despite numerous data-driven algorithms being developed to estimate battery SOH, they are often ineffective in handling time series data, as they are unable to utilize the most significant portion of a time series while predicting SOH. Furthermore, current data-driven algorithms are often unable to learn a health index, which is a measurement of the battery’s health condition, to capture capacity degradation and regeneration. To address these issues, we first present an optimization model to obtain a health index of a battery, which accurately captures the …

Drifting Towards Users’ Doorsteps: Domesticating Academic Library Services, Grace Arerosuoghene Arerosuoghene Dada Mrs

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Library is the heartbeat of research and development in the educational sector. However, since the digital transformation, library patronage had swayed like a pendulum creating gaps in patronage. Expanding (to schools) and extending (to host communities) the tenets of academic librarianship to far reaching ends is imperative to improving library services and increasing patronage. This study attempts to extract from heads of household and librarians, their opinion on domesticating some library services through inclusion of new services for students within and outside the library/school environment, obviously to salvage patronage and contribute to learning performance of students. The survey design was …

The paper sought to evaluate the knowledge-sharing practices of student-teachers in Colleges of Education in Ghana. Specifically, the paper set out to find out the attitude of student-teachers toward knowledge sharing; investigate factors that inhibit knowledge sharing; assess the type of information they shared and explored the mode through which student-teachers preferred to share information. The study employed the descriptive research design and engaged a total population of 600 student-teachers in the Colleges of education in Ghana. Statistical Package for …

Evaluating Automated Truck Platoon (Atp) Deployment For The Los Angeles–Inland Empire Trade Corridor Enhancement, Shailesh Chandra, Aastha Chaudhary, Prakhar Srivastava, Jose Torres-Aguilera Mar 2023

Evaluating Automated Truck Platoon (Atp) Deployment For The Los Angeles–Inland Empire Trade Corridor Enhancement, Shailesh Chandra, Aastha Chaudhary, Prakhar Srivastava, Jose Torres-Aguilera

Mineta Transportation Institute

The California Freight Mobility Plan 2020 lists the Los Angeles-Inland Empire trade corridor region as a prominent industrial hub experiencing an increase in freight flows. The California Freight Mobility Plan also regards automated truck platoon (ATP) as an emerging opportunity to minimize congestion on the trade corridor routes. Percentage change in accessibility from 2022 (“without” ATP) to 2040 (“with” ATP) is calculated for the eighteen industry sectors of the Los Angeles-Inland Empire trade corridor. The application of the accessibility formulation was carried out with data on travel time from I-710 and I-10 within Los Angeles County. The findings suggest that …

Attention-Based Data Analytic Models For Traffic Flow Predictions, Kaushal Kumar, Yupeng Wei Mar 2023

Attention-Based Data Analytic Models For Traffic Flow Predictions, Kaushal Kumar, Yupeng Wei

Mineta Transportation Institute

Traffic congestion causes Americans to lose millions of hours and dollars each year. In fact, 1.9 billion gallons of fuel are wasted each year due to traffic congestion, and each hour stuck in traffic costs about $21 in wasted time and fuel. The traffic congestion can be caused by various factors, such as bottlenecks, traffic incidents, bad weather, work zones, poor traffic signal timing, and special events. One key step to addressing traffic congestion and identifying its root cause is an accurate prediction of traffic flow. Accurate traffic flow prediction is also important for the successful deployment of smart transportation …

Declines in eelgrass, an important and widespread coastal habitat, are associated with wasting disease in recent outbreaks on the Pacific coast of North America. This study presents a novel method for mapping and predicting wasting disease using Unoccupied Aerial Vehicle (UAV) with low-altitude autonomous imaging of visible bands. We conducted UAV mapping and sampling in intertidal eelgrass beds across multiple sites in Alaska, British Columbia, and California. We designed and implemented a UAV low-altitude mapping protocol to detect disease prevalence and validated against in situ results. Our analysis revealed that green leaf area index derived from UAV imagery was a …
