Interview: Brenda Laurel, Jason Challas

SWITCH

This interview with Brenda Laurel, Virtual Reality (VR) author and thinker, discusses the applications and challenges of VR. Creating an emphatic experience using VR technology is possible, but the challenge lies in designing an environment that models the senses to stimulate emotions. VR enables experiences of different genders, but physiological differences between the sexes exist and are important to understand. However, technology used to create the environment and simulation of physical objects in VR is only in the developmental stage. Laurel believes in the importance of keeping the mind grounded in the physical body, in order to strengthen the appreciation …

A Study Of The Community Of Willow Glen San Jose, California, Darrell Alvin Hoff May 1995

A Study Of The Community Of Willow Glen San Jose, California, Darrell Alvin Hoff

Master's Projects

Since the onset of the industrial revolution, cities across the U.S. have been confronted by a paradox that positions economic growth and prosperity against human living conditions and environment. This paradox seems to arise when the factors of industrialization which sustain and boost economic prosperity are also the cause of adverse side effects, detrimental to the social and physical surroundings of the region benefiting economically from this industrialization.

The problems created by industrialization, in most cases, have been the result of combinations of elements necessary for industry to fuel growth. For example, at the turn of the century large increases …

Evaluating Environmental Inequity Using Gis And 1990 U.S. Census Data: A Study Of Silicon Valley, Marc Schlossberg May 1995

Evaluating Environmental Inequity Using Gis And 1990 U.S. Census Data: A Study Of Silicon Valley, Marc Schlossberg

Master's Projects

This report investigates the spatial dynamics of environmental racism by analyzing the demographic characteristics of communities located near toxic Superfund sites in Silicon Valley (Santa Clara County). While previous environmental justice research has largely relied on broad geographic scales—such as zip codes and census tracts—these measurements often fail to accurately capture the localized, concentrated impact of toxic dispersion. To address this methodological flaw, the study utilizes Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and 1990 U.S. Census block-level data to provide a more precise, homogeneous representation of affected populations. The report is divided into two primary sections: an evaluation of environmental inequity surrounding …

Planning For Conflict: Citizen Participation Guidelines, Elizabeth M. Gordon May 1995

Planning For Conflict: Citizen Participation Guidelines, Elizabeth M. Gordon

Master's Projects

This report explores the challenge of implementing affordable and low-income housing in the face of organized community opposition, specifically the NIMBY (Not In My Back Yard) phenomenon. While local governments mandate public participation, these processes are frequently co-opted by residents seeking to exclude specific social groups or inflate property values, often resulting in the derailment of viable housing projects. To overcome these barriers, the study argues that urban planners must proactively manage the participation process by educating citizens on their community responsibilities, mediating conflicts, and distinguishing genuine public concerns from exclusionary tactics. The report outlines the theoretical and legal frameworks …

Ethernet Switching Host Simulator, Janaki L. Gullapalli May 1995

Ethernet Switching Host Simulator, Janaki L. Gullapalli

Master's Projects

The Ethernet Switching Host Simulator (EshSim) is a C++ program running on Solaris workstation with an XView-Open windows user interface. It simulates the software features of the Ethernet Switching Host (ESH) hardware and will be used to test the Ethernet Switching Host Manager (EshMgr) software during development until the ESH hardware becomes available.

EshSim has Ethernet to Asynchronous transfer mode Interface Controller (ENIAC) registers which are setup with specific Virtual Circuit Identifiers (VCI). EshSim generates ethernet packets from the user interface and uses VCIs to send the packets. Depending on the Content Accessible Memory (CAM) setup of the packet's source …

Software Metrics Analysis Tool, Gregory G. Berglund May 1995

Software Metrics Analysis Tool, Gregory G. Berglund

Master's Projects

The Software Metrics Analysis Tool is a set of Microsoft Excel files to help the
software project manager in the daily management of a software project. The
metrics have been selected based on the availability from current measures,
and their significance to the software development process. Five main areas of
measurements are taken: financial cost data (labor hours and dollars), schedule
(milestone) data, size (lines-of-code) data, inspection data, and error (Software
Problem/Change Report) data. This tool will help the software manager in the
analysis of these metrics and to provide insight into the software process and
possible problem areas. Through …

The City Of Monte Sereno General Plan Update, Whitney A. Hudson May 1995

The City Of Monte Sereno General Plan Update, Whitney A. Hudson

Master's Projects

The purpose of this report is to prepare a preliminary assessment of Monte Sereno's
current General Plan and provide a guide for a comprehensive update. The current Plan was
written in 1982, with the provision that it was to be updated every five (5) years. It is a
widely accepted planning standard that a city should comprehensively review their Plan
every five years to determine whether it is still in harmony with community values and
conditions. There have been no revisions to Monte Sereno's current Plan, with the exception
of the Housing Element in 1991. Due to the significant time …

The Potential For Wetlands Regulatory Authority At The Local Level In Contra Costa County, California, Roberta Goulart May 1995

The Potential For Wetlands Regulatory Authority At The Local Level In Contra Costa County, California, Roberta Goulart

Master's Projects

The potential for protection of wetland resources using regulatory mechanisms at the local government level was explored by Contra Costa County, California, as a method to implement new General Plan (1991) policy. Strong policy guidance endorsing protection of wetland resources resulted in a number of questions related to the effectiveness of existing regulations, in turn prompting a new level of understanding related to current regulations and their effects on land use considerations. Over a three year period, a draft wetlands protection ordinance was developed, discussed and significantly revised, evolving as part of an extended public process. Although the ordinance was …

The Congestion Management Program Deficiency Plan Development, Patrick Lee Tyner May 1995

The Congestion Management Program Deficiency Plan Development, Patrick Lee Tyner

Master's Projects

Traffic congestion results in wasted time and lowered productivity.
Less measurable, but equally negative, consequences of traffic congestion
include a rise in personal stress among drivers during gridlock and a
perceived deterioration in quality of life for urban and suburban Californians.
The California Congestion Management Program (CMP) is the means by
which local traffic conditions in urbanized counties can be analyzed to
maintain an acceptable level of operating performance within local
jurisdictions. The CMP statutes require that local jurisdictions, under
certain conditions, develop deficiency plans or plans outlining specific actions,
approved by the local air quality district, that address the …

The Effects Of Light Rail Transit On Urban Density And Property Values, Christopher E. Ferrell May 1995

The Effects Of Light Rail Transit On Urban Density And Property Values, Christopher E. Ferrell

Master's Projects

The post-World War II era has seen an incredible and seemingly unstoppable expansion of North American cities. This expansion has taken place at two distinct levels: First, there has been a general growth of population, continuing a trend started at the beginning of the industrial revolution. Mechanized farming requires less labor in rural areas and provides a greater surplus of agricultural goods for the growth of cities. Cities have been growing at phenomenal rates as people come from rural areas looking for work. Industrial growth and innovation provides machines for the growth of farming production and other industries. Second, there …

Simple Network Manager, Sandhya Vissamsetti May 1995

Simple Network Manager, Sandhya Vissamsetti

Master's Projects

Increasingly organizations are relying on the network for sharing information and

resources. As the size and complexity of networks increase, so do problems
associated with network management. Simple Network Manager(SNM) is a
network management application that allows the Network Managers to evaluate
and control system performance of all network devices that support Simple
Network Management Protocol(SNMP). SNM's open architecture enables it to
manage SNMP-based multi-vendor equipment supporting both vendor specific
and standard Management Information Base(MIB).

SNM provides an easy-to-use graphical user interface to select the operational
parameters of a network device from the MIB. On user query, the application
retrieves …
