Software Time To Market, W. Vincent Tsai
Software Time To Market, W. Vincent Tsai
Master's Projects
This engineering management research report addresses the critical challenge of balancing fast time-to-market with high product quality in software development. While manufacturing sectors have successfully accelerated product development using modern management approaches like concurrent engineering and total quality management, the software industry continues to struggle with delays, cost overruns, and defect-heavy releases.
To address this gap, the study investigates the determining factors that dictate the optimal balance between rapid release cycles and zero-defect software. By utilizing environmental assessments and a quantitative analysis tool, the report provides a strategic framework for software product managers to evaluate external competitive factors, internal company …

On Primitive Bch Codes With Unequal Error Protection Capabilities, Robert H. Morelos-Zaragoza, Shu Lin
On Primitive Bch Codes With Unequal Error Protection Capabilities, Robert H. Morelos-Zaragoza, Shu Lin
Faculty Publications
Presents a class of binary primitive BCH codes that have unequal-error-protection (UEP) capabilities. The authors use a previous result on the span of their minimum weight vectors to show that binary primitive BCH codes, containing second-order punctured Reed-Muller (RM) codes of the same minimum distance, are binary-cyclic UEP codes. The values of the error correction levels for this class of binary LUEP codes are estimated.

SWITCH
An article about how photographic and electronically created pictures mediate and determine social reality, which is one of the most complicated concerns of our time. Definitions of media, the individual's position and responsibilities in society, and the nature of the photographic picture are all on the table. Gary Garrels, Jim Lewis, Christopher Phillips, Sandra S. Phillips, Abigail Solomon-Godeau, Robert R. Riley, and John Weber analyze the work of fifteen postwar artists working in a variety of media to answer these issues. The article starts with a third person point of view about the subject. As the article progresses, it shifts …
The Effect Of Domain Knowledge On Elementary School Children's Search Behavior On An Information Retrieval System: The Science Library Catalog, Sandra Hirsh
Faculty Publications
Few information retrieval systems are designed with children’s special needs and capabilities in mind. We need to learn more about children’s information-seeking behavior in order to provide them with information-based tools which support exploratory learning. This dissertation examines children’s search behavior on a hypertext-based automated library catalog designed for elementary school children. The focus of this research is on the effect of domain knowledge on children’s search performance, search behavior, and learning as they look for science books on this system. Reseaxch has shown that level of domain knowledge in~luences the way people search for information. Data was collected through …
