Edurag: Improving Ai Teaching Assistants With Retrieval-Augmented Generation, Geethika Vadlamudi
Master's Projects
This paper is based on the emerging need for AI-driven teaching assistants to deliver personalized, effective, and responsive educational assistance. Earlier proposals for educational technology such as rule-based systems and adaptive learning platforms have been limited by the lack of flexibility, domain accuracy, and slow, non-interactive support. With the launch of large language models (LLMs) like GPT-3, GPT-4, they have demonstrated that they can generate the kind of human-responsive text. When it comes to more substantive education matters, though, such models suffer from domain accuracy, in addition to whether accurate information can be imparted. And that is where the aspect …

Large Language Models For Bacterial Genomic Analysis, Manvendra Chavan
Master's Projects
Identification of bacterial gene sequences with agricultural applications has the potential to transform agricultural biotechnology. These genes can be used in environmentally friendly pest control strategies. One such use case is identifying genes with potential insecticidal properties. With an increasing number of genomic information and decreasing numbers of available annotated sequences, finding new insecticidal genes has become more challenging. The traditional methods relying on sequence alignment and annotated databases are not effective in detecting functionally relevant genes lacking close homology to known cases. This project investigates the data-driven classification of genes by sequence modeling. This research is focused on learning DNA …
Collaborative Governance In Practice: Evaluating Intergovernmental Relations Through The Santa Clara County Healthy Cities Initiative, Astrid J. Robles
Collaborative Governance In Practice: Evaluating Intergovernmental Relations Through The Santa Clara County Healthy Cities Initiative, Astrid J. Robles
Master's Projects
In the United States, intergovernmental relations (IGR) is rooted in the principles of American federalism, which focuses on the constitutional power dynamics between national, state, and local governments. While federalism outlines the structural framework, IGR specifically focuses on how federal, state, and local governments interact administratively, financially, and politically within the federal system. Beginning in the 1960’s, governments across the U.S. began to rely on non-governmental and private sector organizations for program implementation (Boyd & Fauntroy, 2000). This shift gave rise to the concept of collaborative governance, which expanded the scope of IGR by incorporating traditionally excluded groups from the …
Educator Perspectives Of High School Long-Term English Learners, Martin Gutierrez Jr.
Educator Perspectives Of High School Long-Term English Learners, Martin Gutierrez Jr.
Dissertations
This qualitative study was twofold. The study began by exploring how educators perceive students who are Long Term English Learners (LTELs) and then moved to an autoethnographic examination of the researcher’s own secondary school experiences as an LTEL. The research reviewed teacher and administrator perceptions by focusing on three high school teachers who taught Long Term English Learners during the study period to understand the reclassification process. The researcher interviewed a district-level administrator to understand institutional policies and procedures that determine LTEL student identification and reclassification processes. The researcher presented their autoethnographic narrative to explore how holistic measures support multilingual …
Second Thoughts? Czerny, Beethoven, And The Ninth Symphony’S Choral Finale, Mark Evan Bonds
Second Thoughts? Czerny, Beethoven, And The Ninth Symphony’S Choral Finale, Mark Evan Bonds
The Beethoven Journal
Sometime after the premiere of the Ninth Symphony, according to Carl Czerny, Beethoven told a small circle of friends that he had made a “wrong choice” in writing a choral finale, that he was resolved to write a purely instrumental finale in its place, and that he already had an idea in his head for the new finale. Czerny never committed this report to writing, but he did transmit it orally to three others who did: Leopold von Sonnleithner, Otto Jahn, and Gustav Nottebohm. Anton Schindler would later deny the report, but the available evidence strongly supports the veracity of …

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Computing educators' emotion display is regulated by various norms and conventions. These (unwritten) rules affect which emotions educators feel comfortable expressing to different extents when students can perceive such displays. We draw on emotions and norms literature to investigate higher education computing educators' perceptions of what kinds of norms they have as criteria when considering which emotions they are (not) comfortable showing when teaching. Based on the qualitative content analysis of 22 interviews with computing educators from seven countries, we present various–sometimes connected or conflicting–norms that influence emotion display. These norms comprise moral, national, societal, professional, and affiliation norms that …

Rondo: A Minimal Single Page Application For Digital Exhibits, Nick Szydlowski
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Minimal computing is a promising conceptual framework for digital humanities infrastructure, but the static site architecture most commonly associated with minimal computing can present a steep learning curve, particularly in a workshop or classroom context. This article introduces Rondo, a new minimal framework for digital exhibits which requires no software installation or command line interaction. Rondo differentiates itself from static site tools by adopting a single page application architecture with data stored in a Google Sheet, but it includes tools to disconnect from Google Sheets and create a static site with no external dependencies. Rondo’s reliance on Google Sheets reflects …
A Unifying Double-Reference Approach To Semantic Paradoxes: From The White-Horse-Not-Horse Paradox And The Ultimate-Unspeakable Paradox To The Liar Paradox In View Of The Principle Of Noncontradiction, Bo Mou
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
The purpose of this study is to suggest and explain an engaging approach to three distinct types of (alleged or genuine) semantic paradoxes, the White-Horse-Not-Horse Paradox, the Ultimate-Unspeakable Paradox, and the Liar Paradox, in a unifying way that is sensitive to distinct features of them. Although the three types of semantic paradoxes address distinct types of objects, and although their seemingly paradoxical features are different (alleged or genuine), their distinct structures and contents can be understood and treated on the same common ground, which is jointly conceived in people's pretheoretic understandings of truth and of the double-reference feature of people's …

Malware attacks have a significant negative impact on organizations of varied scales in the field of cybersecurity. Recently, malware researchers have increasingly turned to machine learning techniques to combat sophisticated obfuscation methods used in malware. However, collecting a diverse set of malware samples with various obfuscation techniques is challenging and often takes years, especially for newly developed malware. This issue is further compounded by a well-known limitation of machine learning models: their poor performance when training data is scarce. In this paper, we propose a new system for generating synthetic malware samples to augment imbalanced malware dataset. Our approach decomposes …
“They're Like Slash”: Multimodality And Embodied Agency In Students' Critical Engagements With Texts, María José Aragón, Meghan Corella, Nora W. Lang
“They're Like Slash”: Multimodality And Embodied Agency In Students' Critical Engagements With Texts, María José Aragón, Meghan Corella, Nora W. Lang
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Despite recent calls to more fully incorporate multimodal perspectives into literacies research, there is still limited scholarship examining how students critically engage in reading activities by drawing on embodied practices. Racially and linguistically minoritized students are particularly disadvantaged by dominant logocentric and developmentalist approaches, which privilege oral and written discourse and often position these students as less capable of performing complex literacy practices. Drawing from three independent ethnographic studies, our multimodal interactional analysis examines how students of a range of ages and raciolinguistic backgrounds use embodied actions and other semiotic resources to agentively navigate text, task, and ideological constraints in …

Discharge of calved ice, runoff and mixing driven by subglacial discharge plumes likely have consequences for marine biogeochemistry in Disko Bay, which hosts the largest glacier in the northern hemisphere, Sermeq Kujalleq. Glacier retreat and increasing runoff may impact the marine silica cycle because glaciers deliver elevated concentrations of dissolved silica (dSi) compared to other macronutrients. However, the annual flux of dSi delivered to the ocean from the Greenland Ice Sheet is poorly constrained because of difficulties distinguishing the overlapping influence of different dSi sources. Here we constrain silica dynamics around Disko Bay, including the Ilulissat Icefjord and four other …

Measurement Resolution Enhanced Coherence For Lattice Fermions, Hilary M. Hurst, Yik Haw Teoh, I. B. Spielman
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Weak measurement enables the extraction of targeted information from a quantum system while minimizing decoherence due to measurement backaction. However, in many-body quantum systems, backaction can have unexpected effects on wave-function collapse. We theoretically study a minimal many-particle model consisting of weakly measured noninteracting fermions in a one-dimensional lattice. Repeated measurement of the on-site occupation number with single-site resolution stochastically drives the system toward a Fock state, regardless of the initial state. This need not be the case for measurements that do not, even in principle, have single-site spatial resolution. We numerically show for systems with up to 16 sites …

Script training is a speech-language intervention designed to promote fluent connected speech via repeated rehearsal of functional content. This type of treatment has proven beneficial for individuals with aphasia and apraxia of speech caused by stroke and, more recently, for individuals with primary progressive aphasia (PPA). In the largest study to-date evaluating the efficacy of script training in individuals with nonfluent/agrammatic primary progressive aphasia (nfvPPA; Henry et al., 2018), robust treatment effects were observed, with maintenance of gains up to one year post-treatment. However, outcomes were constrained to measures of script accuracy, intelligibility, and grammaticality, providing a limited view of …

Environmental factors shape subsurface microbial ecosystems, and well-characterized sites are ideal for determining how environmental parameters shape sediment communities. Sediments from eight geologically and thermally distinct sites were drilled during International Ocean Discovery Program Expedition 385 in Guaymas Basin, an expedition focused on the hydrothermal deep biosphere. Using high-throughput 16S ribosomal nucleic acid sequencing, cell counts, phylogenetics, metatranscriptomics, and mineralogical/elemental X-ray spectroscopy, we examine linkages and feedbacks between mineral composition, temperature, geochemistry, and microbial populations. We show subsurface life is dominated by heterotrophic, cosmopolitan prokaryotes that thrive within a range of sediments and temperature conditions across Guaymas Basin. Hydrothermally-affiliated lineages …
Developing An Roi Assessment Model For Employee Development Programs Implemented By California Transit Agencies, Tyler Reeb, Susan Gallagher
Developing An Roi Assessment Model For Employee Development Programs Implemented By California Transit Agencies, Tyler Reeb, Susan Gallagher
Mineta Transportation Institute
The objective of this research is to determine the extent to which transit agencies in California are implementing Return on Investment (ROI) assessments or otherwise evaluating the value and effectiveness of the employee development programs they administer, what cost and performance data they collect and track, and what resources or support are needed to support ROI assessment efforts. Transit agencies will necessarily incur expenses in efforts to improve the recruitment, retention, and morale of employees, but will struggle to solicit adequate funding unless they are able to demonstrate the value of such efforts to a broader audience. Thus, developing and …

The Indirect Benefits Of A Transit Apprenticeship And Its Potential Value As A Flexible Postsecondary Pathway, Kathleen F. Mcconnell, Priya Raman
The Indirect Benefits Of A Transit Apprenticeship And Its Potential Value As A Flexible Postsecondary Pathway, Kathleen F. Mcconnell, Priya Raman
Mineta Transportation Institute
The transit sector has begun to embrace apprenticeships as a worthwhile training model. Apprenticeships may also address young people’s interest in career advancement opportunities, an additional benefit to the transit sector as it replaces an aging workforce and resolves other recruitment challenges. Apprenticeships that emphasize both technical and soft skills invest in career advancement by offering employees the chance to develop “cross-cutting competencies.” A highly developed model of this approach is found in the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority Joint Workforce Initiative (JWI), which formally recognizes skills acquisition with accredited certificates. Further development of this model would find support in …

Right Turn On Red: Energy-Saving Measure Or Unsafe Maneuver?, Bruce Appleyard, Anurag Pande, Joseph Gibbons, Shams Tanvir, Megan Honey, Nell Ahangarfabrik, Mario Carbajal, Madison Swayne
Mineta Transportation Institute
There is a growing interest in prohibiting right turn on red (RTOR) policies in the name of pedestrian and bicycle safety but there is not enough research on the subject to help agencies make informed decisions. When Congress passed the Energy Policy and Conservation Act of 1975, they included a provision requiring states to permit right turns on red lights as an energy-saving measure to receive federal assistance for mandated conservation programs. Since 1980, all states have permitted right turns on red as a general rule. More research is needed to help guide state policies that can support jurisdictions in …

Predevelopment revolving loan funds (PDRLFs) are pools of money from which loans are made and to which loan repayments flow in. They are a part of revolving loan funds (RLFs) that are extensively used in the US to support small businesses and housing. However, PDRLFs' use for funding affordable housing is little-studied. This paper begins to fill this research gap through a literature review and case studies to better understand the key features and the ways to strengthen affordable housing-focused PDRLFs. Finally, it suggests key strategies to strengthen them further, which include flexible funding by the state and federal governments …
The Effects Of Stress On Attentional Networks, Alice Tsvinev
The Effects Of Stress On Attentional Networks, Alice Tsvinev
Master's Theses
The human brain has developed mechanisms to aid our survival, including attentional networks and stress response. Attentional shifts allow humans to react accordingly to their environment, following innate processes like fight or flight. Prolonged exposure to acute stress interferes with such cognitive processes as attention and working memory, impacting attentional systems. The present study examined the effects of acute stress on visual attention processes, specifically focusing on the orienting, alerting, and executive attention networks. 49 participants were randomly placed in either a stress or non-stress condition, then asked to reflect on either stressful or positive moments in their lives, respectively. …
