Neoliberal capitalism has undoubtedly impacted every sphere of public education in the United States. As faculty are pushed towards identity-neutral modalities of instruction, students who identify as transgender, non-binary, or other expansive gender identities (trans) are forced to reckon with implicit and explicit power dynamics in classrooms that prioritize White, cisheteropatriarchal modes of knowledge production in nuanced ways. This qualitative study explores the ways neoliberal capitalism impacts the curricular experiences of trans students by centering the power dynamics they encounter through interactions with their professors and their peers. The first noble truth in Buddhism points toward a purely phenomenal experience. Though purely qualitative in nature, the experience of suffering has an existential aspect. As stated in the second noble truth, suffering has a cause that relates to our situatedness in the world. Arguably, there is a Eurocentric problem in philosophical practice, which, among many other things, has unwarrantedly given Western analytic philosophy an identity power that governs our collective social imagination regarding the ideal philosophy. In this paper, I argue that in both the African and Western philosophical communities, this identity power makes it such that the African analytic philosopher is the victim of different forms of epistemic injustice. In the African community, he is a victim of epistemic withdrawal and epistemic meekness; in the Western community, he is a victim of epistemic gatekeeping. Over 30 school librarians across the U.S. and Canada and who had been nominated by their peers for their excellence were interviewed as a part of the AliveLibrary Project at San Jose State University. The major question was “What are the major characteristics of world class school librarians.” Each was read and rated by three researchers, and in several rounds resulted in eight major characteristics that seem to undergird high impact on teaching and learning across a wide spectrum of locations, affluence, diversity, and communities.

In modern car manufacturing, collaborative robots (cobots) work with human operators during shared workcell interactions to maximize production speed and flexibility. Collaboration between humans and robots is safe and effective only when operator intent recognition via a single wrist-worn inertial measurement unit (IMU) is accurate and low-latency. This thesis develops an IMU-only intent recognition pipeline, and is evaluated on three datasets: the public OPPORTUNITY dataset, the Sony Smartwatch Gesture dataset and a custom Samsung Galaxy watch 6 dataset. Applications of ubiquitous computing, including health monitoring, sports analytics, and ambient-assisted living, rely on Human Activity Recognition (HAR) using wearable sensors. However, model robustness is challenged by missing sensor values, class imbalance, inter-subject variability, and temporal noise. This work proposes a complete HAR pipeline that addresses these challenges through sampling, time-series augmentation, dynamic feature handling, and GAN-PCA-based imputation. Built on the DeepSense architecture, the model integrates convolutional feature extraction with bi-GRUs for temporal modeling. The system is evaluated using 5-fold cross-validation, subject-aware holdout, and LOSEO strategies on the Opportunity dataset. An increasing number of studies find that water sharing—the non-market transfer of privately held water between households—is a ubiquitous informal practice around the world and a primary way that households respond to water insecurity. Yet, a key question about household water sharing remains: is water sharing a viable path that can help advance household water security? Or should water sharing be understood as a symptom of water insecurity in wait for more formalized solutions? This report addresses the sensitivity and reliability of the sustainability rating systems by comparing each category’s verified scores with its respective submitted scores to evaluate how points are awarded for infrastructure projects, examine which categories present the most challenges for verification, and identify the best category for verification in the sustainability rating system. The authors conducted three analyses using credit score data obtained from fourteen actual civil infrastructure projects certified under Envision. In collaboration with the Japanese American Museum of San José, California, we examined their exhibit of WWII-era incarceration of Japanese Americans to understand how the presentation of different positionalities (e.g., Japanese/American, loyal/disloyal) engage with and contest the terms of incarceration and internal politics within the Japanese American community. In our analysis, we focus on the reproduction and contestation of particular narratives of power and identity and treat the memorial exhibit as a variety of community-based “trauma portfolio” that unsettles state bureaucratic constructions of suffering and (in)justice. Research is beginning to find that many BDSM (bondage/discipline, domination/submission, sadism/masochism) practitioners experience benefits beyond sexual pleasure. Additionally, given the relationship between pain and pleasure common in BDSM, there may be certain unanticipated benefits for practitioners reporting chronic pain (PRCP). We conducted an online survey of an international convenience sample of BDSM practitioners (N = 525). Participants were asked about self-perceived benefits and challenges related to participating in BDSM with CP. Inclusive school policies and youth advocacy could promote well-being and positive development among youth of diverse sexual orientations and gender identities. Utilizing three waves of data over a 6-month period, we tested a three-level multilevel model on the extent to which youth’s advocacy in gender-sexuality alliances (GSAs; school clubs affirming youth identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning or with other expansive sexual orientations or gender identities [LGBTQ+]) and attending schools that more thoroughly implemented LGBTQ+ inclusive policies and practices were associated with youth’s self-worth. Changing fire regimes have important implications for biodiversity and challenge traditional conservation approaches that rely on historical conditions as proxies for ecological integrity. This historical-centric approach becomes increasingly tenuous under climate change, necessitating direct tests of environmental impacts on biodiversity. At the same time, widespread departures from historical fire regimes have limited the ability to sample diverse fire histories. We examined 2 areas in California's Sierra Nevada (USA) with active fire regimes to study the responses of bird, plant, and bat communities to a broad spectrum of temporal, spatial, and severity patterns of fire. Commentators on Adam Smith’s Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations often characterize Smith as a proponent of government in multiple areas, including security in person, property, contract, and some public goods. However, Smith understood government more expansively than people today. In volume I, book III, chapters I–IV, Smith describes the evolution of merchant towns in England that led to “good governance” that dismantled the feudal system. Managing personal data, including notes, calendar events, to-do lists, and other personal information, has become increasingly complex and challenging. In response to this issue, I propose a framework using RAG that enables a large language model (LLM) to efficiently query this data without requiring training on the personal data itself. Conventional retrieval systems, including those leveraging vector-based retrievalaugmented generation (RAG), are effective at handling basic queries but struggle to deliver coherent global abstractions, integrate diverse knowledge sources, and account for temporal nuances. The Human Cell Atlas (HCA) created a reference map of all human cells. My project uses the Tabula Sapiens dataset, developed under HCA and based on single-cell RNA sequencing data, to explore cell type and tissue diversity. I performed experiments using the Elbow method and a formula based on dataset observations to determine the number of clusters, then applied k-means clustering on two representative subsets of the All Cells dataset. Clusters were selected for analysis using Shannon’s Diversity Index and Pielou’s Evenness. Big Data infrastructure growth has produced overwhelming metadata volumes which create extensive problems for spatial indexing and both system scalability and database queries. Traditional solutions consisting of R-trees and conventional Bloom filters manage to provide either range query support or approximate membership testing, yet they face performance issues when used at large-scale metadata management. This research proposes Hierarchical Bloom Filter Tree (HBFT) as an improved framework that integrates hierarchical spatial partitioning with partitioned, scalable, cuckoo, and striped Bloom filter variants based on existing studies in hierarchical and probabilistic indexing.
