A History And Analysis Of Growth Management, Claire Marie Twomey
A History And Analysis Of Growth Management, Claire Marie Twomey
Master's Projects
Growth management is one of the most prevalent planning challenges of the 1990s. Strategies for growth management have been developing for the past twenty years. The unfettered growth of post-World War II America has been coming under increased scrutiny in the recent past. Residents now see that uncontrolled growth must be contained. Over the past twenty years, planners have been using growth management as “a tool used by government to control the rate, amount, location, timing and type of development.” These techniques can be used to channel, minimize or control growth. Growth management is a comprehensive planning method to be …

Increase In Fluorescence Intensity Of 16s Rrna In Situ Hybridization In Natural Samples Treated With Chloramphenicol, Cleber C. Ouverney, Jed A. Fuhrman
Increase In Fluorescence Intensity Of 16s Rrna In Situ Hybridization In Natural Samples Treated With Chloramphenicol, Cleber C. Ouverney, Jed A. Fuhrman
Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences
Despite the numerous advantages of fluorescent in situ hybridization for the identification of single prokaryotic cells with 16S rRNA probes, use of the technique with natural samples, especially those from the marine environment, is still problematic. The low percentage of fluorescently labeled cells constitutes the primary problem for in situ hybridization of natural samples, probably due to low cellular rRNA content. This study represents an attempt to improve detection of marine prokaryotes by increasing cellular rRNA content without changing the species composition. Cells from three California coastal sites were treated with chloramphenicol, an inhibitor of protein synthesis and rRNA degradation, …

Flexible Zoning: A Detailed Study, John Channing Timmis
Flexible Zoning: A Detailed Study, John Channing Timmis
Master's Projects
The origin of zoning in America dates back to 1916, when the nation s first comprehensive zoning ordinance was adopted by New York City. This was a time when incompatibie iand uses such as housing and heavy industriai uses were in ciose proximity to one another. A close spatial arrangement between such incompatible uses inevitably led to deleterious effects on the public’s health, welfare and safety. New York City’s zoning ordinance acted as a catalyst in the creation of the 1922 Standard State Zoning Enabling Act. which became a model for local zoning controls throughout the country.

The City of Avondale, Arizona, is a rural community sixteen miles west of Phoenix. Avondale has been known for its agricultural lands, but in the past decade, the town begun a transition towards being a suburb of the Phoenix Metropolitan Area. Now, Avondale is the residence of 23,000 people. In 1990, the City of Avondale established its first zoning ordinance. Today, the City is expecting another 11,000 single family homes by the year 2000, and is in the process of adopting its third specific plan. The following section represents the background and profile for the City of Avondale in attempt …
