Sexual Differences In A Californian Hunter-Gatherer Population, Elizabeth Weiss
Sexual Differences In A Californian Hunter-Gatherer Population, Elizabeth Weiss
Faculty Publications, Anthropology
This project examined the skeletal remains of a 3, 000-year-o/d preagricultural population to determine whether a sexual division of labor existed. Cortical bone remodels itself throughout an individual's lifetime in response to the stresses experienced by activity patterns. Cortical bone morphology, therefore, discloses the nature of the stresses caused by different activity patterns. Computer tomography was used to obtain femoral cross-sections for 30 females and 34 males, taken at two levels along the diaphysis of the bone in order to determine the direction from which the major bending stresses are created. Student's t-tests and Analysis of Variance were used to …
Rna Bulge Entropies Correlate With Peptide Binding Strengths For Hiv-1 And Biv Tar Rna Because Of Improved Conformational Access, Brooke Lustig, I Baharand, R L. Jernigan
Rna Bulge Entropies Correlate With Peptide Binding Strengths For Hiv-1 And Biv Tar Rna Because Of Improved Conformational Access, Brooke Lustig, I Baharand, R L. Jernigan
Faculty Publications, Chemistry
For the binding of peptides to wild-type HIV-1 and BIV TAR RNA and to mutants with bulges of various sizes, changes in the ΔΔG values of binding were determined from experimental Kd values. The corresponding entropies of these bulges are estimated by enumerating all possible RNA bulge conformations on a lattice and then applying the Boltzmann relationship. Independent calculations of entropies from fluctuations are also carried out using the Gaussian network model (GNM) recently introduced for analyzing folded structures. Strong correlations are seen between the changes in free energy determined for binding and the two different unbound entropy calculations. The …
Battery-Operated Atomic Force Microscope, Burford J. Furman, J. Christman, M. Kearny, F. Wojcik, M. Tortonese
Battery-Operated Atomic Force Microscope, Burford J. Furman, J. Christman, M. Kearny, F. Wojcik, M. Tortonese
Faculty Publications, Mechanical Engineering
The design of a battery-operated atomic force microscope (AFM) using a piezoresistive cantilever is described. The AFM is designed so that all power to drive the scanning tube and detection electronics comes from a self-contained battery. The prototype AFM uses a 6 V, Ni–Cd, camcorder battery, however, any battery that supplies between 6 and 12 V may be used. Scanner control and data acquisition are implemented using commercially available software running on an external computer. The prototype AFM achieves a scan area of 53 by 53 μm, consumes 1.8 W of power, and can scan continuously for about 7 h …
Interview With Manuel Delanda, Switch Staffs
Interview With Manuel Delanda, Switch Staffs
SWITCH
An interview with philosopher Manuel De Landa and SJSU CADRE students, Brett Stalbaum, Matt Hoessli, Geri Wittig, Kristin Cully, Geoffrey Bruce, Anne-Marie Schleiner. De Landa's work focuses on the use of networks as a medium of expression. The discussion traces networking technology, including machine intelligence or artificial intelligence’s evolution from military to civilian contexts. They discuss, "One Thousand Years of Nonlinear History", De Landa's most recent book at that time that shows the history of the world from a non-anthropocentric view to make the worldview more inclusive as a self-organized and dynamical system that is unaffected by the hierarchical perspective …
