Status Of E-Theses Repositories With Special Reference To India, Shantashree Sengupta

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Introduction

In the past, researchers were not able to access all the scholarly literature published across the world due to lack of proper communication technologies. With the advent of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), this problem is solved to a major extent and the results of the research going throughout the world is made available to the public without any restriction. The researchers adopted Budapest Open Access Initiative (BOAI) in 2002 and with the help of Open Access (OA) made the research literature available to the world wide user community.

The Open Access Movement

Characterization Of Muscle Spindle Afferents In The Adult Mouse Using An In Vitro Muscle-Nerve Preparation, Katherine Wilkinson, H. E. Kloefkorn, S. Hochman Jun 2012

Characterization Of Muscle Spindle Afferents In The Adult Mouse Using An In Vitro Muscle-Nerve Preparation, Katherine Wilkinson, H. E. Kloefkorn, S. Hochman

Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences

We utilized an in vitro adult mouse extensor digitorum longus (EDL) nerve-attached preparation to characterize the responses of muscle spindle afferents to ramp-and-hold stretch and sinusoidal vibratory stimuli. Responses were measured at both room (24°C) and muscle body temperature (34°C). Muscle spindle afferent static firing frequencies increased linearly in response to increasing stretch lengths to accurately encode the magnitude of muscle stretch (tested at 2.5%, 5% and 7.5% of resting length [Lo]). Peak firing frequency increased with ramp speeds (20% Lo/sec, 40% Lo/sec, and 60% Lo/sec). As a population, muscle spindle afferents could entrain 1:1 to sinusoidal vibrations throughout the …

An Exploratory Study Of Online Information Regarding Colony Collapse Disorder, Meredith K. Boehm May 2012

An Exploratory Study Of Online Information Regarding Colony Collapse Disorder, Meredith K. Boehm

School of Information Student Research Journal

The cause or causes of Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) are uncertain. CCD defines specific characteristics of the nationwide deaths of honey bee colonies in the last decade. Adult bees often disappear from the hive and die, leaving the colony weak and vulnerable to disease. Environmental scientists and agriculturalists have developed many different theories about CCD and its origins. The different theories create challenges regarding the effective dissemination of information about CCD to the different realms of public information seekers. There is a need for an exploration of the online communication of CCD information using federal environmental agency web resources. CCD …

Visualizing Evolution In Real-Time Method For Strain Engineering, Luis Reyes, James Winkler, Katy Kao May 2012

Visualizing Evolution In Real-Time Method For Strain Engineering, Luis Reyes, James Winkler, Katy Kao

Faculty Publications

The adaptive landscape for an industrially relevant phenotype is determined by the effects of the genetic determinants on the fitness of the microbial system. Identifying the underlying adaptive landscape for a particular phenotype of interest will greatly enhance our abilities to engineer more robust microbial strains. Visualizing evolution in real-time (VERT) is a recently developed method based on in vitro adaptive evolution that facilitates the identification of fitter mutants throughout the course of evolution. Combined with high-throughput genomic tools, VERT can greatly enhance the mapping of adaptive landscapes of industrially relevant phenotypes in microbial systems, thereby expanding our knowledge on …

Extreme climatic events (ECEs) – such as unusual heat waves, hurricanes, floods, and droughts – can dramatically affect ecological and evolutionary processes, and these events are projected to become more frequent and more intense with ongoing climate change. However, the implications of ECEs for biological invasions remain poorly understood. Using concepts and empirical evidence from invasion ecology, we identify mechanisms by which ECEs may influence the invasion process, from initial introduction through establishment and spread. We summarize how ECEs can enhance invasions by promoting the transport of propagules into new regions, by decreasing the resistance of native communities to establishment, …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Introduction

Information Technology (IT) has had a positive impact on health care delivery system worldwide, particularly in the areas of disease control, diagnosis, patient management, teaching and learning. Anuobi (2004) pointed out that man has scientifically placed himself in an environment that is global and digital, which predisposes him to constant use of information, its location notwithstanding. Shanahan (2006) believes that the health care industry is in a state of constant and rapid change and due to the increase in scientific knowledge and rapid technological advances, there has been a growing emphasis on the physicians need to efficiently access, retrieve, …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Introduction

India invests a huge amount of money and time for the production of doctorates to meet its R&D needs. Evaluation of research institutions is very important for their ranking, proper funding, grant releasing etc. Very few studies have been made to compare and evaluate the research output of the universities and R&D organizations of West Bengal. In recent past NAAC started evaluation of overall activities of the universities of our country. In a 5 to 1 star ranking by NAAC, The University of Burdwan received four-star status, which is later revised to B+. The University of Burdwan was established …

India's Efforts In Open Access Publishing, Bhaskar Mukherjee, Bidyut Kumar Mal

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Introduction

For a long time, India has been generating a great deal of scholarly resources in all disciplines. After independence, there was a lot of investment in science and technology, and S&T were used to leverage development efforts and to improve the standard of living. However, one in four Indians still lives below the poverty line. There is a considerable research effort in a wide variety of areas including science, technology, medicine, humanities and social sciences. Research is performed essentially in three sectors: (1) higher educational institutions, such as universities and deemed universities (2) laboratories under different government agencies such …

Hidden Markov Models For Software Piracy Detection, Shabana Kazi Apr 2012

Hidden Markov Models For Software Piracy Detection, Shabana Kazi

Master's Projects

The unauthorized copying of software is often referred to as software piracy. Soft- ware piracy causes billions of dollars of annual losses for companies and governments worldwide. In this project, we analyze a method for detecting software piracy. A meta- morphic generator is used to create morphed copies of a base piece of software. A hidden Markov Model is trained on the opcode sequences extracted from these mor- phed copies. The trained model is then used to score suspect software to determine its similarity to the base software. A high score indicates that the suspect software may be a modified …

Knowledge Engineering In Search Engines, Yun-Chieh Lin Apr 2012

Knowledge Engineering In Search Engines, Yun-Chieh Lin

Master's Projects

With large amounts of information being exchanged on the Internet, search engines have become the most popular tools for helping users to search and filter this information. However, keyword-based search engines sometimes obtain information, which does not meet user’ needs. Some of them are even irrelevant to what the user queries. When the users get query results, they have to read and organize them by themselves. It is not easy for users to handle information when a search engine returns several million results. This project uses a granular computing approach to find knowledge structures of a search engine. The project …

Metagenome – Processing And Analysis, Sheetal Gosrani Apr 2012

Metagenome – Processing And Analysis, Sheetal Gosrani

Master's Projects

Metagenome means “multiple genomes” and the study of culture independent genomic content in environment is called metagenomics. Because of the advent of powerful and economic next generation sequencing technology, sequencing has become cheaper and faster and thus the study of genes and phenotypes is transitioning from single organism to that of a community present in the natural environmental sample. Once sequence data are obtained from an environmental sample, the challenge is to process, assemble and bin the metagenome data in order to get as accurate and complete a representation of the populations present in the community or to get high …
