An Approach To Solve Job Shop Scheduling Problem, Shashidhar Reddy Karnati Oct 2012

An Approach To Solve Job Shop Scheduling Problem, Shashidhar Reddy Karnati

Master's Projects

“A biotechnology device manufacturer needs to devise effective scheduling algorithms for its testing devices. A device is a configuration of machines, each of which performs a specific task, such as washing, reading and cleaning. These devices are used to test human samples to diagnose diseases like cholera, malaria etc. Each test is a job, which is to be processed on these machines for a specific amount of time. Every job has its own pre defined sequence. These samples are to be processed simultaneously on machines owing to constraint that as soon as one machine completes processing a sample, it should …

Algorithms For Solving The Reducts Problem In Rough Sets, Shuang Wang

Master's Projects

This work deals with finding minimal reducts of decision table based on the rough sets theory. Its goal is to develop algorithms capable of finding such reducts. Two algorithms are presented in this report: the first based on Boolean reasoning function, the second based on Genetic Algorithm. Test results on real data are given and conclusions are made.

A Database-Driven Website Of Β-Thalassemia Mutations, Vanessa Gaeke Oct 2012

A Database-Driven Website Of Β-Thalassemia Mutations, Vanessa Gaeke

Master's Projects

β-thalassemia is a genetic disease caused by mutations of the hemoglobin gene β (HBB). Over two hundred β-thalassemia mutations are known to date. While the pathological consequence of each β-thalassemia mutation has been well documented, the effect of a mutation at the molecular level of its DNA sequence is usually not illustrated for beginners. This paper describes the cause of β-thalassemia and a database-driven website containing mutant HBB sequences altered by β-thalassemia mutations. β-thalassemia mutations and their relevant data are first collected from the HbVar Database of Pennsylvania State University and loaded into a PostgreSQL database. Wild type HBB sequences …

Eigenvalue Analysis For Metamorphic Detection, Sayali Deshpande Oct 2012

Eigenvalue Analysis For Metamorphic Detection, Sayali Deshpande

Master's Projects

Metamorphic viruses change their structure on each infection while maintaining their function. Although many detection techniques have been proposed, practical and effective metamorphic detection remains a difficult challenge. In this project, we analyze a novel method for detecting metamorphic viruses. Our approach was inspired by a well-known facial recognition technique that is based on eigenvalue analysis. We compute eigenvectors using opcode sequences extracted from a set of known metamorphic viruses. These eigenvectors can then be used to score a given executable file, based on its extracted opcode sequence. We perform extensive testing to determine the effectiveness of this scoring technique …

Structural Entropy And Metamorphic Malware, Donabelle Baysa Oct 2012

Structural Entropy And Metamorphic Malware, Donabelle Baysa

Master's Projects

Metamorphic malware is capable of changing its internal structure without al- tering its functionality. A common signature is nonexistent in highly metamorphic malware. Consequently, such malware may remain undetected even under emulation and signature scanning combined. In this project, we use the concept of structural entropy to analyze variations in the complexity of data within a file. The process consists of two stages, namely, file segmentation and sequence comparison. In the file segmentation stage, we use entropy measurements and wavelet analysis to segment a file. The second stage measures the similarity of files by computing the edit distance between sequence …

Stealthy Plaintext, Naidele Katrumane Manjunath Oct 2012

Stealthy Plaintext, Naidele Katrumane Manjunath

Master's Projects

Correspondence through email has become a very significant way of communication at workplaces. Information of most kinds such as text, video and audio can be shared through email, the most common being text. With confidential data being easily sharable through this method most companies monitor the emails, thus invading the privacy of employees. To avoid secret information from being disclosed it can be encrypted. Encryption hides the data effectively but this makes the data look important and hence prone to attacks to decrypt the information. It also makes it obvious that there is secret information being transferred. The most effective …

Algorithms For Predicting Secondary Structures Of Human Viruses, Hardik Shah Oct 2012

Algorithms For Predicting Secondary Structures Of Human Viruses, Hardik Shah

Master's Projects

The mechanism and role of RNA secondary structure elements in the replication and translation of human positive-strand RNA viruses remains poorly understood. These secondary structures are formed when a single RNA strand folds over and base pairs with itself, forming various types of loop structures. RNA strands fold into specific shapes. This unique shape for each nucleic acid chain is the most stable state it can adopt. The lower the energy, i.e., the fold with highest number of base pairs, the higher the stability of the structure. The Dynamic Programming technique, such as the one used in Nussinov- Jacobson algorithm, …

Access To Media Resources As Predictor Of Adolescents’ Attitude To Sexual And Reproductive Health Practices In Selected Non-Governmental Organisations In Nigeria, Sunday Olusola Ladipo, Adewale Adeduntan Mr

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This study investigated the influence of adolescents’ access to media resources on attitude to sexual and reproductive health. The survey research design was adopted while the questionnaire was used as the major instrument of data collection. Sixty copies of questionnaire were administered on the adolescents that were purposively selected from the three organisations chosen for the study while only 52 copies were returned with useful responses. The findings of the study revealed that the adolescents make use of electronic media resources more than other categories of media resources such as print and oral media resources. The study established a significant relationship …

Bioactive Trace Metal Distributions And Biogeochemical Controls In The Southern Ocean, Christopher Measures, Mariko Hatta, Maxime Grand Sep 2012

Bioactive Trace Metal Distributions And Biogeochemical Controls In The Southern Ocean, Christopher Measures, Mariko Hatta, Maxime Grand

Faculty Publications

Extensive sampling in many regions of the Southern Ocean has demonstrated that surface water concentrations of dissolved Fe are low enough to limit phytoplankton growth. In contrast, there is currently no evidence that other bioactive elements (e.g., Mn, Zn, Co) are similarly limiting. Although atmospheric input of dissolved Fe to Southern Ocean surface waters appears to be low, resuspension of sediments from shallow regions around islands and the Antarctic coastline can inject significant amounts of Fe into the surrounding waters, stimulating primary production and providing a natural laboratory for studying the response of biological systems to natural Fe fertilization processes. …

Genomic Characteristics Of An Environmental Microbial Community Harboring A Novel Human Uncultured Tm7 Bacterium Associated With Oral Diseases, Michael Abrams, David Barton, Eamon Vandaei, Diana Romero, Adam Caldwell, Cleber C. Ouverney Aug 2012

Genomic Characteristics Of An Environmental Microbial Community Harboring A Novel Human Uncultured Tm7 Bacterium Associated With Oral Diseases, Michael Abrams, David Barton, Eamon Vandaei, Diana Romero, Adam Caldwell, Cleber C. Ouverney

Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences

The diversity of prokaryotes associated with humans has been dominated by uncultured species (not isolated in pure culture). For instance, nearly 80% of the human gut and 68% of the human oral microbes are thought to be uncultured; some of which have been associated with human oral, digestive, vaginal, and cardiovascular diseases. The revalence of uncultured pathogens is expected to continue to increase within the near future. In fact, public databases such as GenBank have nearly quadrupled the number of candidate phyla (those made entirely of uncultured organisms) since the 1980s and currently lists many new lineages of unclassified Bacteria …

Betwixt And Between Past And Present: Cultural And Generic Hybridity In The Fiction Of Mary Yukari Waters, Rania Samir Youssef Aug 2012

Betwixt And Between Past And Present: Cultural And Generic Hybridity In The Fiction Of Mary Yukari Waters, Rania Samir Youssef

Asian American Literature: Discourses & Pedagogies

The cosmopolitan make-up of the American society has yielded cultural hybrid offspring and this cultural hybridity features strongly in contemporary American fiction. Amy Tan and Mary Yukari Waters are both Asian-Americans who portray such hybridity in their short stories which depict the shifting identities of the self. But do the internal categories of gender, race and ethnicity help in the coherence or do they add to the fragmentation of diverse identities? It is the dynamics of this critique of multiple identification and hybrid cultures that is being traced here in this study and how all this is reflected in narrative …

American Orientalism And Cosmopolitan Mixed Race: Early Asian American Mixed Race In The American Literary Imagination, Melissa Eriko Poulsen Aug 2012

American Orientalism And Cosmopolitan Mixed Race: Early Asian American Mixed Race In The American Literary Imagination, Melissa Eriko Poulsen

Asian American Literature: Discourses & Pedagogies

This paper offers and initial examination of representations of Asian American mixed race during the long period of Asian exclusion and enforced anti-miscegenation when racial mixing was legally proscribed. I argue that this literature must be understood through two categories – Orientalist texts that produce and reproduce dominant discourses about Asian American mixed race and cosmopolitan texts written by mixed-race figures circling in vanguard cliques of art and literature. After tracking the representations of early Asian American mixed race in U.S. literature, this paper offers an analysis of the writing of Asian American mixed-race authors themselves in order to expand …

Disturbing Stereotypes: Fu Man/Chan And Dragon Lady Blossoms, Audrey Wu Clark

Asian American Literature: Discourses & Pedagogies

Article Submission (Accepted with Revisions): “Disturbing Stereotypes: Fu Man/Chan and Dragon Lady Blossoms” Article Abstract: In documenting anti-miscegenation laws in the United States, critic Sally L. Kitch argues that they were not only directed against mixed heritage African Americans but also against Asians after the Civil War. Kitch writes, “Fourteen states, including many that entered the Union after the war, adopted or revised anti-miscegenation statutes to apply to ‘Mongolians,’ or ‘Malays’ in general or to the Chinese in particular. Gender was also paramount to western lawmakers as they determined that the ‘blacks’ white women were most likely to marry were …

Excursus On "Hapa;" Or The Fate Of Identity, Nicole Myoshi Rabin Aug 2012

Excursus On "Hapa;" Or The Fate Of Identity, Nicole Myoshi Rabin

Asian American Literature: Discourses & Pedagogies

This paper focuses on the contradictions and tensions inherent in self-identification and oppositional identities. In the past twenty years, Hapa has emerged as an oppositional identity used by mixed-race Asian Americans. While many scholars have noted the tension of the term for its linguistic appropriation from the Native Hawaiian language, fewer scholars have concentrated their examinations on the ways in which the term reproduces the very notions it aims to subvert. This paper concentrates on the areas of contradiction inherent in finding and using "a word of power" and making that word into a recognizable identity.

A Hapa Family In Chekhov's Three Sisters, Elizabeth Liang Aug 2012

A Hapa Family In Chekhov's Three Sisters, Elizabeth Liang

Asian American Literature: Discourses & Pedagogies

It is an act of courage or foolhardiness to produce theatre in the heart of the film world, depending on your point of view and how large the houses turn out to be. In the fall of 2005, I produced Three Sisters in a 60-seat theatre in Burbank, California (home of Disney and Warner Bros.). The odds were stacked even higher against the show's success when I stipulated that the main characters, the upper-class and highly educated Russian Prozorov siblings, had to be played by hapa actors. This essay describes my attempt to interpret the play through a multi-ethnic lens …

Lis Curriculum Review Using Focus Group Interviews Of Employers, Khalid Mahmood Jun 2012

Lis Curriculum Review Using Focus Group Interviews Of Employers, Khalid Mahmood

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Introduction

The employers of library and information science graduates are many and varied in nature. Designing an LIS educational program for diversified needs and expectations of the employers is very difficult. Library schools are always expected to get input from the consumers of their product about their changing expectations and needed skill set of the graduates. IFLA guidelines (2000) and ALA standards (2008) for LIS educational programs also acknowledge the employers’ right to know whether a given program is of good standing. They recommend the involvement of employers in planning and evaluation of program goals/objectives and curriculum. They also recommend …

Disruptive Readers In Academic Libraries: A Study Of Olabisi Onabanjo University Library, F.A. Oyesiku, O. Buraimo, O.F. Olusanya

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Introduction

Academic libraries have a pivotal role in the transmission of information and knowledge in higher educational institutions. They are to facilitate the teaching, learning and research functions of their respective institutions. Academic libraries managers they are expected to acquire, preserve and disseminate information resources that would satisfy the needs of both present and future users (Maidabino 2010). Aside from theft, mutilation, hiding and other disruptive measures, borrowing privileges is an important means of giving access to library collections for personal, educational, and socio-economic advancement. Gelfand (2005) in Maidabino (2010), calls the library, "the only centralized location where new and …

Preservation And Conservation Issues In Selected Private Universities In South-West Nigeria, Miracle Eka Njeze Jun 2012

Preservation And Conservation Issues In Selected Private Universities In South-West Nigeria, Miracle Eka Njeze

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Introduction

Librarians the world over are tasked with the responsibility of acquiring, processing, disseminating this information to users, and due to constant exposure of clients to these materials the rate of degradation increases. Every library is prone to two kinds of deterioration: biological deterioration caused by insect attack/fungi growth or environmental deterioration caused by extreme dampness, wide fluctuations of relative humidity, variations in temperatures, light and atmospheric pollutants (Maravilla, 2008).

Library materials consist of media, non-book and non-print resources. Examples of media resources include computer hard-drive, databases, library software; non book materials include CD ROMs, audio and video tape, while …
