Case Studies Of Tropical Cyclones And Phytoplankton Blooms Over Atlantic And Pacific Regions, Ashley Merritt-Takeuchi, Sen Chiao
Case Studies Of Tropical Cyclones And Phytoplankton Blooms Over Atlantic And Pacific Regions, Ashley Merritt-Takeuchi, Sen Chiao
Faculty Publications, Meteorology and Climate Science
This study investigates phytoplankton blooms following the passage of tropical cyclones in the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean basins. The variables of sea surface temperature (SST), chlorophyll (Chl-a), precipitation, and storm surface winds were monitored for two case studies, Typhoon Xangsane (2006) and Hurricane Earl (2010). Strong near-surface wind from tropical cyclones creates internal friction, which causes deep nutrient enriched waters to displace from the bottom of the ocean floor up toward the surface. In return, the abundance of upwelled nutrients near the surface provides an ideal environment for the growth of biological substances such as chlorophyll and phytoplankton. The inverse …

Lokta’S Law Revisited In Toxicology Literature, Mini Devi B
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The article highlights the significance of Lotka’s Inverse Square Law of Scientific Productivity in today’s information age and later studies. The classical law is applied to Toxicology literature collected from the international database, Toxicology Information Online (TOXLINE), and its validity on that data was tested. The data was found unfit for the law Hence a new formula is derived, , was found fit for the study.

Controversial discussions on causality have been present in ancient philosophy since the days of Aristotle. Despite the use of this concept in numerous subjects, there is no consensus on the definition of causality and its possible mathematization. Many authors have analyzed the relation between causes and effects; the predominant school of thought reduces causation to a physical relation (either deterministic or probabilistic) between two events. The distinction between causes and consequences is not always clear and meaningful as different “layers of understanding” may be applied to the notion of causality. From this point of view the cause-effect implication relation can …

Do Markets Promote Immoral Behavior?, Fred Foldvary

Pure markets enhance good behavior, because in such arrangements, voluntary acts are rewarded and involuntary acts are punished. A pure market, as we define it, consists only of voluntary human action. That’s because a truly free market includes governance structuresthat penalize coercive harm, and such pure markets do not impose any restrictions or costs on honest and peaceful human activity.Critics of markets think otherwise. They point to slave markets or a market for stolen goods as examples of market immorality.

Consumption of added sugar has increased over recent decades and is correlated with numerous diseases. Rodent models have elucidated mechanisms of toxicity, but only at concentrations beyond typical human exposure. Here we show that comparatively low levels of added sugar consumption have substantial negative effects on mouse survival, competitive ability, and reproduction. Using Organismal Performance Assays—in which mice fed human-relevant concentrations of added sugar (25% kcal from a mixture of fructose and glucose, modeling high fructose corn syrup) and control mice compete in seminatural enclosures for territories, resources and mates—we demonstrate that fructose/glucose-fed females experience a twofold increase in mortality …

"Vinegar Soup Improved His Womb": Food, Appetite, And The Redefining Of Asian American Masculinity In Kingston's China Men, Danielle Crawford
"Vinegar Soup Improved His Womb": Food, Appetite, And The Redefining Of Asian American Masculinity In Kingston's China Men, Danielle Crawford
Asian American Literature: Discourses & Pedagogies
This paper examines the connection between food, appetite, and gender identity in Maxine Hong Kingston's China Men. Specifically, I argue that Kingston's use of food in China Men reconstructs traditional norms of masculinity. Food, appetite, consumption, and foodways are thus a crucial component in Kingston's larger project of redefining Chinese American masculinity. Drawing off of recent studies regarding the role of food and gender in Asian American literature, my analysis focuses on the characters Tang Ao, Kingston's father and the uncles from the New York laundry, Ah Goong, and Kingston's brother from the Vietnam War. These characters' consumption practices and …

"You No Real Man": Constructing Gender, Sexuality, And The Asian American Subject In Jana Monji's "Kim", Robin E. Field
Asian American Literature: Discourses & Pedagogies
Jana Monji's short story "Kim" offers a stunning plot twist that challenges readers initial interpretations of the characters as well as many assumptions and stereotypes about Asian American identity, gender, sexuality, and culture. Its pedagogical value for introducing basic literary theory, heterogeneity within gender and sexual identities, and Asian American culture and history is immeasurable. In this essay, I offer an overview of the story, my interpretations of the text, and the pedagogical strategies I use to introduce undergraduate students to concepts that often challenge their world views. Ultimately, this story provides instructors with an accessible and multifaceted text through …
The Effect Of Water Temperature On Drilling And Ingestion Rates Of The Dogwhelk Nucella Lapillus Feeding On Mytilus Edulis Mussels In The Laboratory, Luke P. Miller
Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences
In highly seasonal intertidal habitats, changes in temperature through the year may drive substantial shifts in feeding and growth rates of organisms. For the dogwhelk Nucella lapillus, attacking and consuming Mytilus edulis mussels can take hours or days, depending on temperature. Handling time of dogwhelks feeding on mussels is therefore greatly affected by ocean temperature. I recorded attack time in the laboratory, partitioned into drilling and consumption time, for juvenile dogwhelks across a range of seawater temperatures representative of field seawater temperatures during the main growing seasons of summer and autumn. The combined length of a drilling attack and …

Concentrations of domoic acid (DA) above the regulatory limit in Washington coast razor clams are usually higher on northern beaches from summer to fall. Recent field studies have confirmed that the primary source of toxic Pseudo-nitzschia (PN) cells in those seasons is a semi-retentive topographically trapped seasonal eddy located offshore and north of the clamming beaches. Another semi-retentive coastal feature, Heceta Bank, that has been shown to support toxic PN cells in summer, is located south of Washington’s clamming beaches. In this paper we present evidence to demonstrate that Heceta Bank, although not a likely source of toxic cells to …
The Limits Of Being Transgendered, Kristin Zimmerman, Linda Shuhaiber
The Limits Of Being Transgendered, Kristin Zimmerman, Linda Shuhaiber
Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science
Society’s construction of what is acceptable and what is the norm excludes those struggling with the issue of gender identity. Stigmatization of the trans-community has led to a number of issues that have ostracized this group of individuals and created a divide within society. Judgments, misconduct, and assumptions about transgendered and transsexual individuals come as a result of a lack of awareness and knowledge regarding this misrepresented group of people. The unfortunate truth of the matter is that there is no quick fix to the issue at hand. Educating society, changes in policy and the practicing of social acceptance is …
