Comparing Wearer Dna Sample Collection Methods For The Recovery Of Single Source Profiles, Corissa J. Harris, Amanda J. Cardenas, Steven B. Lee, Brooke Barloewen
Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science
Wearer DNA is the deposit of epithelial cells on clothing worn by an individual. Detection of the last individual to handle or wear an item is often an important and desirable determination in forensic science. The most commonly used collection methods for wearer DNA include swabbing and scraping. These often result in mixture profiles. Recently, adhesives have been introduced as a possible reliable method for the collection of biological evidence. The goal of the research was to compare the current collection methods of swabbing and scraping with a gel film called Gel-Pak ‘0’ which shares similar properties with adhesives. Gel-Pak …
The Patriot Act: Liberty Afire, Mark Fox
The Patriot Act: Liberty Afire, Mark Fox
Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science
The USA PATRIOT Act was written and passed into law in the United States within weeks of the devastating 9/11 terrorist attack. Its purpose was to strengthen and realign U.S. policy to allow greater judicial power to better protect the U.S. from further acts of terrorism. However, as the legal tenets of the Act became more transparent, public concern mounted over the wide latitude given to the governmental agencies that seemed to threaten academic and intellectual freedom and overall civil liberties. The problems inherent in the USA PATRIOT Act are described, and potential amendments and improvements have been suggested.

Analysis Of Kullback-Leibler Divergence For Masquerade Detection, Geetha Ranjini Viswanathan
Analysis Of Kullback-Leibler Divergence For Masquerade Detection, Geetha Ranjini Viswanathan
Master's Projects
A masquerader is an attacker who gains access to a legitimate user’s credentials and pretends to be that user so as to avoid detection. Several statistical techniques have been applied to the masquerade detection problem, including hidden Markov models (HMM) and one class na ̈ Bayes (OCNB). In addition, Kullback-Leibler ıve (KL) divergence has been used in an effort to improve detection rates. In this project, we develop and analyze masquerade detection techniques that employ KL divergence, HMMs, and ONCB. Detailed statistical analysis is provided to show that our results outperform previous related research.

Modular Approach To Big Data Using Neural Networks, Animesh Dutta
Master's Projects
Machine learning can be used to recognize patterns, classify data into classes and make predictions. Neural Networks are one of the many machine learning tools that are capable of performing these tasks. The greatest challenges that we face while dealing with the IBM Watson dataset is the high amount of dimensionality, both in terms of the number of features the data has, as well the number of rows of data we are dealing with. The aim of the project is to identify a course of action that can be chosen when dealing with similar problems. The project aims at setting …

Research has documented tobacco-related health disparities by race and gender. Prior research, however, has not examined expectancies about the smoking cessation process (i.e., abstinence-related expectancies) as potential contributors to tobacco-related disparities in special populations. This cross-sectional study compared abstinence-related expectancies between American Indian (n = 87), African American (n = 151), and White (n = 185) smokers, and between women (n = 231) and men (n = 270) smokers. Abstinence-related expectancies also were examined as mediators of race and gender relationships with motivation to quit and abstinence self efficacy. Results indicated that American Indians and African Americans were less likely …

Impact Of Captioned Video Instruction On Nigerian Hearing-Impaired Pupils’ Performance In English Language, Tayo Taofiq Omoniyi
Impact Of Captioned Video Instruction On Nigerian Hearing-Impaired Pupils’ Performance In English Language, Tayo Taofiq Omoniyi
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
This study investigated impact of captioned video instruction on Nigerian hearing impaired pupils’ performance in English language. The study adopted quasi-experimental pretest, post test, control group design. The experimental group was exposed to captioned video instruction while the control group was taught using the conventional teaching method for the hearing impaired. Two hypotheses were raised and field validated Primary English Performance Test (PEPT) used as data collection instrument. The study concluded that both instructional strategies were effective in giving English language instruction to hearing impaired pupils, as performance of the two groups did not indicate any significant difference and gender …
