Incorporating Wordnet In An Information Retrieval System, Shailesh Padave Apr 2014

Incorporating Wordnet In An Information Retrieval System, Shailesh Padave

Master's Projects

Query expansion is a method of modifying an initial query to enhance retrieval performance in information retrieval operations [11] . There are alternate ways to expand a user input query such as finding synonyms of words, re-weighting the query, fixing spelling mistakes, etc. [11] . In this project, we created a query rewriting algorithm, which uses synonyms for a given word for query expansion. These synonyms were chosen using WordNet, a lexical database for English [16] [15] . Similarity ranking functions and a part-of- speech tagger were written to extract the essential data from WordNet output. Various experiments were carried …

Big Data Analysis Using Neuro-Fuzzy System, Amir Eibagi

Master's Projects

This project addresses big data classification using hybrid Intelligence
Classification System. Hybrid Intelligence classification system is a system that
combines at least two intelligent technologies. Specifically, the focus of this project is to
apply hybrid Neuro-Fuzzy system to the IBM Watson data and Innocentive
Trustworthiness challenge data for prediction and classification. Neural network are low-
level computational structure which has ability to learn and performs well on the raw
data. On the other hand, fuzzy logic deals with reasoning on higher level using If-then
rules and linguistic variables. So combining these two methods can provide us with a
very powerful …

Light And Affects From A Comparative Point Of View, Kyle Takaki Jan 2014

Light And Affects From A Comparative Point Of View, Kyle Takaki

Comparative Philosophy

Light metaphors occurring in Chinese philosophy and Stoicism are of special interest for the unique ways they channel potentialities of the self. In this paper I apply ideas from cognitive linguistics to examine selected structural features of these metaphors. I also build on these ideas by presenting a framework regarding affects to assist in disclosing what is at stake for differing Chinese and Stoic technologies of the self. The paper adopts a high-level perspective to see these broad philosophical implications, interleaving discussions of Chinese philosophy (mainly views associated with Daoism), Stoicism (bringing into relief important differences from these views), and …

Educating Students Who Do Not Speak The Societal Language: The Social Construction Of Language-Learner Categories, Guadalupe Valdés, Luis E. Poza, Maneka Deanna Brooks

Faculty Publications

On 21 September 2012, California Assembly Bill 2193 was approved by Governor Jerry Brown. The bill added sections to California’s Education Code defining the terms long-term English learner and English learner at risk of becoming a long-term English learner. It mandated that the Department of Education collect data on the number of students corresponding to both new categories and report those data to school districts. This specific example of the construction of categories and labels matters because it is a clear example of how coexisting discourses and language ideologies provide a set of cultural rules, conditions, practices, and power …

Entre Familia: Immigrant Parents’ Strategies For Involvement In Children’S Schooling, Luis E. Poza, Maneka Deanna Brooks, Guadalupe Valdés Jan 2014

Entre Familia: Immigrant Parents’ Strategies For Involvement In Children’S Schooling, Luis E. Poza, Maneka Deanna Brooks, Guadalupe Valdés

Faculty Publications

Teachers and administrators in schools with large, working-class Latino populations often complain of parents’ indifference or lack of involvement in children’s schooling because of their low visibility at school events and relatively little face-to-face communication with teachers and school administration. In a series of semi-structured interviews with Latino immigrant parents, this study finds that, despite different educational experiences than those of their children in the United States, these parents engage in many of the parent involvement strategies observed by previous research to be most beneficial, though often through avenues bypassing the school itself. This finding presses schools and districts to …

The Influence Of Socioeconomic Factors On The Development Of Early Number Concepts, Brittany Meghan Caldwell Jan 2014

The Influence Of Socioeconomic Factors On The Development Of Early Number Concepts, Brittany Meghan Caldwell

Master's Theses

Why are some children entering school unable to count, while others are able to

do simple addition? It may be that early experiences, like practice with numbers and extra resources to promote logical thinking, lay the foundation for how children and adults understand and use math in their everyday lives. The major objectives of this thesis are to explore the 1) link between children's intuitive number sense and their development of exact number concepts, 2) influence of language on early math achievement, and 3) influence of socioeconomic factors on various aspects of cognitive development. Participants included 133 preschool aged children …

Mapping The Monster: Locating The Other In The Labyrinth Of Hybridity, Jill Kristine Harper Jan 2014

Mapping The Monster: Locating The Other In The Labyrinth Of Hybridity, Jill Kristine Harper

Master's Theses

By the last two decades of the nineteenth century, Great Britain led the European contest for imperial dominion and successfully extended its influence throughout Africa, the Americas, South East Asia, and the Pacific. National pride in the world's leading empire, however, was laced with an increasing anxiety regarding the unbridled frontier and the hybridization of Englishness and the socio-ethnic and cultural Other. H. Rider Haggard's She, Bram Stoker's Dracula, and Richard Marsh's The Beetle, three Imperial Gothic novels, personify the monstrosity of hybridity in antagonists who embody multiple races and cultures. Moreover, as representatives of various ancient …

Collection Development In The Humanities And Social Sciences In A Transitional Age: Deaccession Of Print Items, David E. Woolwine Jan 2014

Collection Development In The Humanities And Social Sciences In A Transitional Age: Deaccession Of Print Items, David E. Woolwine

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

A literature review of user preferences, research habits and needs, and citation studies are used to argue that deaccession of print titles in the humanities and social sciences in academic libraries should occur in a conservative fashion as libraries transition to greater digital holdings. The issue of retention of translations is given special emphasis. The centrality of engaged research for undergraduate education makes the retention, at present, of both a rich print and digital collection necessary as the distinction between a collection geared toward faculty research and one for undergraduate research becomes less important.
