The present study asks when young children understand that number words quantify over sets of discrete individuals. For this study, 2- to 4-year-old children were asked to extend the number word five or six either to a cup containing discrete objects (e.g., blocks) or to a cup containing a continuous substance (e.g., water). In Experiment 1, only children who knew the exact meanings of the words one, two and three extended higher number words (five or six) to sets of discrete objects. In Experiment 2, children who only knew the exact meaning of one extended higher number words to discrete …
Pattern Discovery Of Sequential Symbolic Data Using Automata With An Application To Author Identification, Nikhil Kalantri
Pattern Discovery Of Sequential Symbolic Data Using Automata With An Application To Author Identification, Nikhil Kalantri
Master's Projects
Author Identification is the process of identifying a piece of text to ascertain if it has an inherent writing style or pattern based on a certain author. Almost all literary books can be accredited to a certain author since it has been signed. However, there also exist a plethora of unfinished books or manuscripts that could be attributed to a range of possible authors. For example, William Shakespeare has written many plays that have not been signed by him. In order to assess the importance of such texts that do not bear the authors signature, it could be vital to …

Wikipedia-Type Disambiguation Functionality In Lcsh: A Recommendation, Daniel Canncasciato
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Abstract: A proposal for a modest change in LCSH practice (and RDA when chapter 23 is written) to provide a Wikipedia-type disambiguation function for subject headings in library catalogs. Such a change is cost effective, scalable, familiar, and system-agnostic. Furthermore, it is necessary for fulfillment of our catalog objectives.

On The Primitives Of Causality: From The Semantics Of Agonist And Antagonist To Models Of Accident Causation And System Safety, Loïc Brevault, Francesca Favaro, Joseph Saleh
Faculty Publications
Controversial discussions on causality have been present in ancient philosophy since the days of Aristotle. Despite the use of this concept in numerous subjects, there is no consensus on the definition of causality and its possible mathematization. Many authors have analyzed the relation between causes and effects; the predominant school of thought reduces causation to a physical relation (either deterministic or probabilistic) between two events. The distinction between causes and consequences is not always clear and meaningful as different “layers of understanding” may be applied to the notion of causality. From this point of view the cause-effect implication relation can …

Palaeo-Philosophy: Archaic Ideas About Space And Time, Paul S. Macdonald
Comparative Philosophy
This paper argues that efforts to understand historically remote patterns of thought are driven away from their original meaning if the investigation focuses on reconstruction of concepts, instead of cognitive complexes. My paper draws on research by Jan Assmann, Jean-Jacques Glassner, Keimpe Algra, Alex Purves, Nicholas Wyatt, and others on the cultures of Ancient Greece, Israel, Egypt, Mesopotamia, and Etruria through comparative analyses of the semantic fields of spatial and temporal terms, and how these terms are shaped by their relation to the sphere of the sacred. It shows that there are three super-ordinate timeframes - the cyclical, the linear …

Teaching Race And Space Through Asian American And Latino Performance Poetry: I Was Born With Two Tongues Broken Speak And Sonido Ink(Quieto)S Chicano, Illnoize, Jane Hseu
Asian American Literature: Discourses & Pedagogies
I Was Born with Two Tongues and Sonido (Ink)quieto, two Chicago-based spoken word and musical groups, both released CDs around the turn of the millennium: Two Tongues Broken Speak in 1999 and Sonidos Chicano, Illnoize in 2001. Both CDs centrally wrestle with issues of racial and ethnic identity: the title of the CD, Chicano, Illnoize, indicates the pronounced effort to map a Chicano identity onto Chicago, and Two Tongues title Broken Speak expresses the four main poets struggle with hyphenated Asian American identities. Yet these two groups, who share much in common from their roots in the Chicago slam and …

Shattering The Binary: Teaching Critical Thinking Through John OkadaS No-No Boy, Sarita Nyasha Cannon
Asian American Literature: Discourses & Pedagogies
In this article, I share the philosophical stance that I have developed in relationship to my teaching of U.S. Ethnic Literature and examine the rewards and pitfalls of this path by reflecting on my own experiences teaching John Okadas No-No Boy in undergraduate American literature courses. By illuminating why texts (especially texts by Ethnic American authors) matter intellectually, emotionally, and politically, this discussion will provide a model for critical and self-reflexive pedagogy at the beginning of the twenty-first century.

"You No Real Man": Constructing Gender, Sexuality, And The Asian American Subject In Jana Monji's "Kim", Robin E. Field
Asian American Literature: Discourses & Pedagogies
Jana Monji's short story "Kim" offers a stunning plot twist that challenges readers initial interpretations of the characters as well as many assumptions and stereotypes about Asian American identity, gender, sexuality, and culture. Its pedagogical value for introducing basic literary theory, heterogeneity within gender and sexual identities, and Asian American culture and history is immeasurable. In this essay, I offer an overview of the story, my interpretations of the text, and the pedagogical strategies I use to introduce undergraduate students to concepts that often challenge their world views. Ultimately, this story provides instructors with an accessible and multifaceted text through …

Role Of Panjab Digital Library In Digitizing Manuscripts: A Case Study, Pardeep Rattan
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
A manuscript is basically a hand-written or inscribed piece of information on bark, leaf, cloth, metal, paper or any other material in any composition. This may be a combination of letters, pictures, symbols, maps, figures etc. with knowledge content about the art, culture, history and science of a civilization. The word manuscript was originated in 16th century from Medieval Latin word “Manuscriptus” from Manu by ‘hand’ + Scriptus ‘written’. The preservation of manuscripts is of utmost importance to protect and save the rich cultural and heritage history of a civilization/ nation. The paper in hand is an …

Current Status Of Shodhgangotri: Repository Of Indian Research In Progress, Shantashree S. Sengupta
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Across the globe, new research projects are undertaken every year by the researchers. There should be some system which will maintain a database of ongoing research work in order to avoid duplication of research. Some universities and institutions in foreign countries maintain database of research in progress. In India, various universities and institutions like INFLIBNET, DELNET, NASSDOC, IISc, CSIR and University of Mysore etc. have their Electronic thesis and dissertation (ETD) repository providing open or login based access to full-text ETDs. But, none of these have any database of Research in Progress. Recently, INFLIBNET introduced ShodhGangotri, which has been built …

Improving Principal Quality For Schools With English Learners: Reculturing Instructional Leadership [Aera Paper], Noni Reis, Barbara Flores
Faculty Publications
In this paper we draw attention to the importance of school leadership on the academic achievement of English Learners. Furthermore, we suggest that school leaders can play a key role in advocating for equitable policies that will improve the academic achievement of English learners. For within-school factors related to student achievement, school leadership quality is second only to the effects of the quality of curriculum and teacher’s instruction (Heck & Leathwood, 2000; Leithwood and Riehl, 2003). The literature reports, however, that the influence of school leadership on student learning is not so evident in low-performing schools (Riordan, 2003). Furthermore, studies …
