Children are considered one of the main user profiles of metaverses, since they get into those digital universes by playing sandbox video games as Fortnite, Minecraft, or Roblox. However, a lack of research focused on the how, why and outcomes of this vulnerable target in metaverses has been noted. This study aims to investigate the behavior of children in the metaverses through their use of video games and the perceptions of their parents, considering them an indirect target. A total of 31 semi-structured interviews were conducted with children aged between six and 12 years old and their parents. Also, a …

Relational Resources: Moving From Plural To Entangled Extractivisms, James Alejandro Artiga-Purcell Apr 2024

Relational Resources: Moving From Plural To Entangled Extractivisms, James Alejandro Artiga-Purcell

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Increasing studies of extractivisms, in the plural, examine the diverse politics that permeate extractive activities. However useful, this appeal to plurality is problematic. Plurality without relationality risks justifying some extractive activities over others, without addressing how they relate. Drawing on anti-essentialist, decolonial, and political ecological scholarship, this article proposes an ontological reframing of extractivisms that troubles the division and comparison that pervade notions of taxonomic plurality, and emphasizes the mutual constitution articulated within the concept of relationality. Analyses of relational resources are better equipped to illuminate the power-laden associations through which supposedly distinct commodity values, extractive geographies, sectors, and governance …

Active transportation modes such as walking and biking are gaining popularity for their extensive health and environmental benefits, yet scholars know little about how place-based accessibility varies by area sociodemographic composition. This study is among the first to examine sociodemographic disparities (by both race and socioeconomic status) in bikeability while allowing for heterogeneity in disparities. Consideration of bikeability disparities is particularly critical within the framework of urban planning concepts that promote equitable accessibility and reduced dependency on automobiles, such as the 15-minute city. Geographically Weighted Regressions examined associations between census tract-level bikeability (using an index that combines five components), socioeconomic …

State Of Health And Remaining Useful Life Prediction Of Lithium-Ion Batteries With Conditional Graph Convolutional Network, Yupeng Wei, Dazhong Wu

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Graph convolutional networks (GCNs) have been increasingly used to predict the state of health (SOH) and remaining useful life (RUL) of batteries. However, conventional GCNs have limitations. Firstly, the correlation between features and the SOH or RUL is not considered. Secondly, temporal relationships among features are not considered when projecting aggregated temporal features into another dimensional space. To address these issues, two types of undirected graphs are introduced to simultaneously consider the correlation among features and the correlation between features and the SOH or RUL. A conditional GCN is built to analyze these graphs. A dual spectral graph convolutional operation …

Bisphenol F (BPF) is a potential neurotoxicant used as a replacement for bisphenol A (BPA) in polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins. We investigated the neurodevelopmental impacts of BPF exposure using Drosophila melanogaster as a model. Our transcriptomic analysis indicated that developmental exposure to BPF caused the downregulation of neurodevelopmentally relevant genes, including those associated with synapse formation and neuronal projection. To investigate the functional outcome of BPF exposure, we evaluated neurodevelopmental impacts across two genetic strains of Drosophila— w1118 (control) and the Fragile X Syndrome (FXS) model—by examining both behavioral and neuronal phenotypes. We found that BPF exposure in w1118 …

The social, economic, and ecological impacts of wildfires are increasing over much of the United States and globally, partially due to changing climate and build-up of fuels from past forest management practices. This creates a need to improve coupled fire–atmosphere forecast models. However, model performance is difficult to evaluate due to scarcity of observations for many key fire–atmosphere interactions, including updrafts and plume injection height, plume entrainment processes, fire intensity and rate-of-spread, and plume chemistry. Intensive observations of such fire–atmosphere interactions during active wildfires are rare due to the logistical challenges and scales involved. The California Fire Dynamics Experiment (CalFiDE) …

Genetic Algorithm For Automated Parameterization Of Network Hamiltonian Models Of Amyloid Fibril Formation, Gianmarc Grazioli, Andy Tao, Inika Bhatia, Patrick Regan

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

The time scales of long-time atomistic molecular dynamics simulations are typically reported in microseconds, while the time scales for experiments studying the kinetics of amyloid fibril formation are typically reported in minutes or hours. This time scale deficit of roughly 9 orders of magnitude presents a major challenge in the design of computer simulation methods for studying protein aggregation events. Coarse-grained molecular simulations offer a computationally tractable path forward for exploring the molecular mechanism driving the formation of these structures, which are implicated in diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and type-II diabetes. Network Hamiltonian models of aggregation are centered around …

The Role Of Libraries In Bridging Gender Inequality In Nigeria: A Critical Review, Udemezue Joseph Ogugua, Julius Okeke Ofordile, Amarachi E. Agubosim, Nnaemeka Uchenna Ezeonyi

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The paper discusses the role of libraries in bridging gender inequality in Nigeria. Gender inequality is discrimination on the basis of sex or gender where one sex or gender is placed in a more advantageous position than the other. Gender inequality is one issue that has been on the front burner but efforts to tackle it are not yielding the desired results. In the light of this, the idea of libraries wading into the matter seems a better option. The paper discusses the factors responsible for gender inequality in Nigeria as follows: socio-cultural factors, socio-economic factors, socio-religious factors, socio-political factors, …
