Exploring Equity Frameworks For A Cross-Jurisdictional Vehicle Miles Traveled Mitigation Program In Santa Clara County, Serena Alexander, Luana Chen, Maxwell Belote-Broussard

Mineta Transportation Institute

The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) partnered with a Mineta Transportation Institute (MTI) research team and San José State University (SJSU) students for assistance in developing the equity framework for the agency’s proposed Equitable Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT) Mitigation Program. The goal of the program is to reduce the amount of driving generated from new developments in Santa Clara County through transportation solutions with equity and cross-jurisdictional collaboration in mind. During the Fall 2023 semester, graduate urban planning students from SJSU worked to develop policy recommendations for the program equity framework through a literature review, spatial analysis, community engagement …

What Do Americans Think About Federal Tax Options To Support Transportation? Results From Year Fifteen Of A National Survey, Asha Weinstein Agrawal, Hilary Nixon

Mineta Transportation Institute

This report summarizes the results from the fifteenth year of a national public opinion survey asking U.S. adults questions related to their views on federal transportation taxes. A nationally representative sample of 2,522 respondents completed the online survey from February 7 to March 12, 2024. The questions test public opinions about raising the federal gas tax rate, replacing the federal gas tax with a new mileage fee, and imposing a mileage fee just on commercial travel. In addition to asking directly about support for these tax options, the survey collected data on respondents’ views on the quality of their local …

Transit Workforce Development Challenges And Mitigation Practices, Jodi Godfrey

Mineta Transportation Institute

The objective of this research is to summarize previously conducted research related to workforce development challenges in the transit industry, detailing major findings and subsequent recommendations based on the annotated bibliography of the current atmosphere and most successful ways to mitigate those challenges to attract and retain talent in the transit industry. According to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the U.S. had over 10 million job openings and only 5.7 million unemployed workers in March 2023. In 2017, the Washington Post posited that there were not enough workers to fill the vacancies, as the U.S. Census Bureau announced a 17-year …

Effects Of Group Visits On Self-Care Management For Veterans With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, James Nwaizugbu May 2024

Effects Of Group Visits On Self-Care Management For Veterans With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, James Nwaizugbu

Doctoral Projects

Individuals diagnosed with type two diabetes mellitus (DM2) can be overwhelmed by daily choices, leading to self-care neglect. Self-care is vital to DM2 management to avoid chronic complications. This project utilized group visits to increase self-care management and improve outcomes among veterans with poorly controlled DM2.

This evidence-based practice (EBP) project used a single-group quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design to evaluate a self-care management program for US veterans with poorly controlled DM2 who were enrolled a clinic within the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Northern California Healthcare System (NCHCS). The study facilitator provided education on DM2, medication, diet, and exercise. Participants (N …

Primary Care Access In San Luis Obispo County- Primary Care Practitioner’S Perspectives, Jessica Peckham May 2024

Primary Care Access In San Luis Obispo County- Primary Care Practitioner’S Perspectives, Jessica Peckham

Doctoral Projects

This study investigates healthcare access and utilization among Primary Care Providers (PCPs) in SLO County, utilizing a mixed-methods approach. Survey responses from PCPs when applied to Levesque’s Theoretical Framework reveal variations in provider approachability and acceptability, alongside significant wait times for both new and established patients, indicating barriers in healthcare reaching. Qualitative interviews further illuminated dimensions of healthcare access, including socioeconomic disparities and provider burnout. These underscore the complexities of ensuring equitable access to primary care services. The relationship between provider and consumer dimensions, such as work-life balance, workload, and the role of advanced practice providers, highlight the intricate dynamics …

Application Of Digital Holographic Imaging To Monitor Real-Time Cardiomyocyte Hypertrophy Dynamics In Response To Norepinephrine Stimulation, Wahida Akter, Herman Huang, Jacquelyn Simmons, Alexander Y. Payumo May 2024

Application Of Digital Holographic Imaging To Monitor Real-Time Cardiomyocyte Hypertrophy Dynamics In Response To Norepinephrine Stimulation, Wahida Akter, Herman Huang, Jacquelyn Simmons, Alexander Y. Payumo

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Cardiomyocyte hypertrophy, characterized by an increase in cell size, is associated with various cardiovascular diseases driven by factors including hypertension, myocardial infarction, and valve dysfunction. In vitro primary cardiomyocyte culture models have yielded numerous insights into the intrinsic and extrinsic mechanisms driving hypertrophic growth. However, due to limitations in current approaches, the dynamics of cardiomyocyte hypertrophic responses remain poorly characterized. In this study, we evaluate the application of the Holomonitor M4 digital holographic imaging microscope to track dynamic changes in cardiomyocyte surface area and volume in response to norepinephrine treatment, a model hypertrophic stimulus. The Holomonitor M4 permits non-invasive, label-free …

A Survey Of Nurse Preceptor Preferences Regarding Training Topics: A Descriptive Study, Janice Yao Valadez

Doctoral Projects

Background: The nurse preceptor role can be as challenging and demanding as it is critical in the context of nursing shortages and burnout. The improvement of nurse preceptor training, based on preferences expressed by the nurses fulfilling this role, therefore represents a potentially important part of the solution to these problems.

Methods: A modified version of the +RN Learning Needs Assessment tool was administered to 24 nurse preceptors who precepted in the nurse residency program on two campuses of a not-for-profit Western US hospital, regarding their preferences for topics to be covered in preceptor training, as well as the sequence …

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

The mainstays of lung cancer pathogenesis are cell cycle progression dysregulation, impaired apoptosis, and unregulated cell proliferation. While individual microRNA (miR) targeting or delivering is a promising approach that has been extensively studied, combination of miR targeting can enhance therapeutic efficacy and overcome limitations present in individual miR regulations. We previously reported on the use of a miR-143 and miR-506 combination via transient transfections against lung cancer. In this study, we evaluated the effect of miR-143 and miR-506 under stable deregulations in A549 lung cancer cells. We used lentiviral transductions to either up- or downregulate the two miRs individually or …

Exploring Situational Factors For Female International Students And Their Satisfaction In Higher Education Using Cb-Sem, Dian Fu Chang, Angel Chang, Cheng Yi Kang

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

While the topic of attracting and maintaining inbound international students has received much scholarly attention in higher education, attracting female international students has rarely been discussed. This study addresses the issue of attracting degree-seeking female international students. Based on the notion of situational factors and total quality management (TQM), we assumed both institutional design and students’ satisfaction are core concepts for attracting and retaining female international students that will make a difference in higher education. A total of 215 survey responses were analyzed, and a covariance-based structural equation modeling (CB-SEM) approach was developed. The results confirm female international students’ perception …
