The Role Of Libraries In Bridging Gender Inequality In Nigeria: A Critical Review, Udemezue Joseph Ogugua, Julius Okeke Ofordile, Amarachi E. Agubosim, Nnaemeka Uchenna Ezeonyi
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The paper discusses the role of libraries in bridging gender inequality in Nigeria. Gender inequality is discrimination on the basis of sex or gender where one sex or gender is placed in a more advantageous position than the other. Gender inequality is one issue that has been on the front burner but efforts to tackle it are not yielding the desired results. In the light of this, the idea of libraries wading into the matter seems a better option. The paper discusses the factors responsible for gender inequality in Nigeria as follows: socio-cultural factors, socio-economic factors, socio-religious factors, socio-political factors, …

Mineta Transportation Institute
This study provides baseline data on the status of the racial/ethnic and gender diversity of the transit agency workforce in the U.S. and identifies potential barriers and promising practices for diversifying this workforce. Public transit agencies function best when the diversity of their workforce represents the communities they serve, yet previous research finds an underrepresentation of women and minorities in senior and managerial roles, along with an overconcentration of men and workers of color—particularly Black workers—in operational roles (e.g., drivers, janitors).
The study updates those earlier studies with newer data drawn from five discrete research tasks: 1) review of the …

Investigating The Effects Of Alcohol Consumption On Manual And Automated Driving: A Systematic Review, Miaomiao Dong, Yuni Lee, Jackie Cha, Gaojian Huang
Mineta Transportation Institute
There are direct correlations between drunk driving and car-related injuries, disabilities, and death. Autonomous vehicles (AVs) may provide useful driver support systems to prevent or reduce road accidents. However, AVs are not yet fully automated and require human drivers to take over the vehicle at times. Therefore, understanding how alcohol affects driving performance in both manual and automated driving is important because manual drives may offer insights into the takeover process in AVs. A systematic review of 53 articles from eight databases was conducted. Findings were categorized based on the human information processing model, which can be extended to the …

Remaining Useful Life Prediction Using Graph Convolutional Attention Networks With Temporal Convolution-Aware Nested Residual Connections, Yupeng Wei, Dazhong Wu, Janis Terpenny
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Degradation of engineered systems can result in poor performance and failure. Graph Convolutional Networks (GCNs) have been used to predict the remaining useful life (RUL) of engineered systems by analyzing condition monitoring data. Conventional GCNs typically stack multiple spectral graph convolutional layers, where each layer aggregates condition monitoring data and then projects the aggregated data into another feature space. However, conventional GCNs suffer from two issues. Firstly, repeated aggregation operations affect the temporal correlation of condition monitoring data. Secondly, repeated aggregation and projection operations may generate less significant features, resulting in poor prediction performance. To address these issues, we introduce …

Determining Best Diet And Temperature Regime Of Monkeyface Pricklebacks (Cebidichthys Violaceus) For Aquaculture, Luke C. Townsend
Master's Theses
Wild freshwater eel populations are threatened due to overfishing and habitat degradation. Attempts to use aquaculture to close the eel life cycle have yet to be commercially adapted, owing largely to their complex lifecycle. Monkeyface pricklebacks (Cebidichthys violaceus) are intertidal fish that may serve as an alternative species for freshwater eels in aquaculture, as they possess several beneficial characteristics. This study aimed to optimize diet and culture temperatures to maximize monkeyface prickleback cultures by measuring growth, condition, metabolic rates, fillet composition, and critical thermal maximum (CTmax) of juvenile fish that were reared in two separate experiments: (1) on four different …

Intersecting Perspectives: A Comparative Dialogue On Respect In Confucian And Western Philosophies, Chuan Chih Hsu, Antonio Calderón, Chia Shih Su
Comparative Philosophy
Present study analyzes the concept of respect in both Confucius' and Western philosophical traditions. It reveals the differences in interpretation and practice of respect due to their distinctive cultural, historical, and philosophical contexts. Confucius' philosophy emphasizes respect towards authority, traditions, and the elderly through dedication and commitment, while Western philosophy, primarily Aristotle's perspective, emphasizes reciprocal respect and the inherent rights of individuals. Both systems of thought, although contrasting, seek to promote values fostering cooperation, understanding, and peaceful coexistence. Despite their varied conceptualizations of respect, the ultimate goal remains the same – to provide ethical and moral guidance for a harmonious …

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
This report presents a new method for removing electrical artifact contamination from the electrically evoked compound action potential (eCAP) evoked by single cathodic-leading, biphasic-pulse stimulation. The development of the new method is motivated by results recorded in human cochlear implant (CI) users showing that the fundamental assumption of the classic forward masking artifact rejection technique is violated in up to 45% of cases tested at high stimulation levels when using default stimulation parameters. Subsequently, the new method developed based on the discovery that a hyperbola best characterizes the artifacts created during stimulation and recording is described. The eCAP waveforms obtained …
