Is A Psychotic Anthropology Possible? Or How To Have Inclusive Anthropologies Of Subjectivity And Personhood, John Marlovits, Matthew J. Wolf-Meyer Oct 2023

Is A Psychotic Anthropology Possible? Or How To Have Inclusive Anthropologies Of Subjectivity And Personhood, John Marlovits, Matthew J. Wolf-Meyer

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Dominant anthropological theories of mind, cognition, and consciousness reify particular ways of being in the world as "normal," which marginalizes the experiences of people who do not meet normative expectations of personhood or exhibit nonnormative subjectivities. By focusing on atypical forms of communication and self-representation in the ethnographic record, which draws from work in the anthropology of disability and psychological anthropology, we argue for the need to attend to interactions and behavior as the necessary basis for anthropological studies of personhood and subjectivity. These foci, which build on a foundation provided by affect theory and disability studies, stand to open …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The primary aim of this attempt is to provide a thorough overview of Information Seeking Behavior (ISB) research within Library and Information Science (ISB) utilizing sophisticated bibliometric analysis tools. We searched the bibliographical data from Scopus and examined with the help of Biblioshiny and VOSviewer to demonstrate the visualization. A total of 1957 documents were included in the dataset. The growth rate is calculated at 7.88%. The total quantity of references quoted across all the documents in the dataset amounts to 57870. The study exposed that the highest number of articles (n=140) were produced in the year 2012 followed by …

An Investigation Of Information Needs And Information Seeking Behaviour Of Nursing And Clinical Students In An Academic Healthcare Institution., Catherine Wanyingi, Peter Gatiti, Arnold Mwanzu

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Although the concept of information-seeking behaviour has evolved significantly among professionals, it is unclear how much the nursing profession has been affected by these changes. Examining information seeking behavior for the nursing profession is significant as nurses need to use the most current information to meet clinical and

educational needs Besides, information seeking is one of the steps of embracing evidence-based practice which has been identified as one of the core competencies

needed for the health care professionals in the 21st century.

This study sought to establish the information sources used by nursing and clinical students at Aga Khan University, …

Work–Family Conflict And Its Sustainability Implications Among Married Immigrants Working In The Usa, Neena Gopalan, Nicholas J. Beutell, Joseph G. Grzywacz, Wendy Middlemiss, Srikant Manchiraju, Sapna Srivastava Oct 2023

Work–Family Conflict And Its Sustainability Implications Among Married Immigrants Working In The Usa, Neena Gopalan, Nicholas J. Beutell, Joseph G. Grzywacz, Wendy Middlemiss, Srikant Manchiraju, Sapna Srivastava

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

There is a paucity of research on the work and family dynamics of immigrants who arrive in the U.S. on visas. Work–family conflict among immigrants is a sustainability issue because it affects social cohesion, economic vitality, and the overall wellbeing of communities. This study examined work–family conflicts and work–life support among married immigrants (n = 182) born abroad but currently holding permanent resident status (also known as ‘green card holders’) in the U.S. Specifically, we examined how work variables (job intensity and work–life support) may either lead to or reduce job burnout, how burnout may be related to work–family conflict, …

Genomic Approaches To Mitigating Genetic Diversity Loss In Declining Populations, Christen M. Bossu, Marina Rodriguez, Christine Rayne, Debra A. Chromczak, Philip G. Higgins, Lynne A. Trulio, Kristen C. Ruegg Oct 2023

Genomic Approaches To Mitigating Genetic Diversity Loss In Declining Populations, Christen M. Bossu, Marina Rodriguez, Christine Rayne, Debra A. Chromczak, Philip G. Higgins, Lynne A. Trulio, Kristen C. Ruegg

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

The accelerating pace of global biodiversity loss is exacerbated by habitat fragmentation and subsequent inbreeding in small populations. To address this problem, conservation practitioners often turn to assisted breeding programmes with the aim of enhancing genetic diversity in declining populations. Although genomic information is infrequently included in these efforts, it has the potential to significantly enhance the success of such programmes. In this study, we showcase the value of genomic approaches for increasing genetic diversity in assisted breeding efforts, specifically focusing on a highly inbred population of Western burrowing owls. To maximize genetic diversity in the resulting offspring, we begin …

Promoting Political Participation Among In-School Adolescents Using Library Resources In Enugu State, Nigeria, Grace Ogechukwu Ugwonna, Phd, Patricia Nwamaka Aroh, Phd, Chizoba Jovita Akudike, Chioma Christiana Omeke

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The perception of teachers and students on promoting political participation among in-school adolescents using library resources was ascertained. The motivation for the study was prompted by the incessant low political participation in democracies including Nigeria. This is evident in the statistical evidence showing the low voter turnout compared to the registered voters over the years. Studies show that youth disengage more in political participation than the elderly ones. This is worrisome considering that most of the youth are school leavers and ought to have learned and imbibed the rudiments of democratic principles, although the debate on the extent to which …

Virus Control Aboard A Commuter Bus, Hamid Rahai, Jeremy Bonifacio Oct 2023

Virus Control Aboard A Commuter Bus, Hamid Rahai, Jeremy Bonifacio

Mineta Transportation Institute

A major health concern for public transit users is exposure to viruses from other passengers. This numerical study examines virus containment aboard a public bus with changes to the bus ventilation system. The virus was modeled as a 2.5 µm round solid particle released from the mouth of the infectious passenger at a rate of 21 particles per second at a mouth velocity of 0.278 m/sec. The air delivery to the cabin was two linear ceiling slots spanning the length of the bus delivering 59.38 m3/min (2,097 CFM) of air at a mean velocity of 1 m/sec. Two different axial …

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Calls for using marine protected areas (MPAs) to achieve goals for nature and people are increasing globally. While the conservation and fisheries impacts of MPAs have been comparatively well-studied, impacts on other dimensions of human use have received less attention. Understanding how humans engage with MPAs and identifying traits of MPAs that promote engagement is critical to designing MPA networks that achieve multiple goals effectively, equitably and with minimal environmental impact. In this paper, we characterize human engagement in California's MPA network, the world's largest MPA network scientifically designed to function as a coherent network (124 MPAs spanning 16% of …
