Nigerian’s Children’s literature is one valuable tool for addressing social issues in Nigeria. However, it is often neglected due to its simplicity and it has implication for the future of any nation. This paper discusses the concept of Nigerian children’s literature and how it can be used as a method for addressing social issues in Nigeria. The purpose of the study was to identify these social issues which include gender discrimination, insecurity, corruption and sexual immorality, the causes of these social ills, the implications of these social issues, the relationship between social issues and children’s literature and also proffer children’s …

Ngc 474 As Viewed With Kcwi: Diagnosing A Shell Galaxy, Adebusola B. Alabi, Anna Ferre-Mateu, Duncan A. Forbes, Aaron J. Romanowsky, Jean P. Brodie
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
We present new spectra obtained using Keck/KCWI and perform kinematics and stellar population analyses of the shell galaxy NGC 474, from both the galaxy centre and a region from the outer shell. We show that both regions have similarly extended star formation histories although with different stellar population properties. The central region of NGC 474 is dominated by intermediate-Aged stars (8.3 ± 0.3 Gyr) with subsolar metallicity ([Z/H] =-0.24 ± 0.07 dex) while the observed shell region, which hosts a substantial population of younger stars, has a mean luminosity-weighted age of 4.0 ± 0.5 Gyr with solar metallicities ([Z/H] =-0.03 …
Meteorological Profiling In The Fire Environment Using Uas, Matthew J. Brewer, Craig B. Clements
Meteorological Profiling In The Fire Environment Using Uas, Matthew J. Brewer, Craig B. Clements
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
With the increase in commercially available small unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), new observations in extreme environments are becoming more obtainable. One such application is the fire environment, wherein measuring both fire and atmospheric properties are challenging. The Fire and Smoke Model Evaluation Experiment offered the unique opportunity of a large controlled wildfire, which allowed measurements that cannot generally be taken during an active wildfire. Fire–atmosphere interactions have typically been measured from stationary instrumented towers and by remote sensing systems such as lidar. Advances in UAS and compact meteorological instrumentation have allowed for small moving weather stations that can move with …

Estimating Pm2.5In Southern California Using Satellite Data: Factors That Affect Model Performance, Jennifer D. Stowell, Jianzhao Bi, Mohammad Z. Al-Hamdan, Hyung Joo Lee, Sang Mi Lee, Frank Freedman, Patrick L. Kinney, Yang Liu
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Background: Studies of PM2.5 health effects are influenced by the spatiotemporal coverage and accuracy of exposure estimates. The use of satellite remote sensing data such as aerosol optical depth (AOD) in PM2.5 exposure modeling has increased recently in the US and elsewhere in the world. However, few studies have addressed this issue in southern California due to challenges with reflective surfaces and complex terrain. Methods: We examined the factors affecting the associations with satellite AOD using a two-stage spatial statistical model. The first stage estimated the temporal PM2.5/AOD relationships using a linear mixed effects model at 1 km resolution. The …

Automatic Traffic Monitoring And Management For Pedestrian And Cyclist Safety Using Deep Learning And Artificial Intelligence, Mohammad Pourhomayoun
Mineta Transportation Institute
In this project, we have designed and developed an effective end-to-end system based on advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI), machine learning, and computer vision to automatically monitor, detect, track, and count pedestrians and bicyclists. The main objective of this project is to improve the safety of pedestrians and bicyclists, by applying self-sensed and AI-powered systems to monitor and control the flow of pedestrians/bicyclists. The developed system includes algorithms for detecting the pedestrians and bicyclists, as well as algorithms for tracking and counting the pedestrians. We evaluated the developed system on real videos captured by actual traffic cameras in the city of …

Will Ride-Hailing Enhance Mobility For Older Adults? A California Survey, Asha Weinstein Agrawal, Manish Shirgaokar, Aditi Misra, Martin Wachs, Bonnie Dobbs
Mineta Transportation Institute
Ride-hailing services such as Lyft and Uber offer a potential mobility option for the growing numbers of aging Californians who risk social and economic isolation if they cannot drive for health or financial reasons. They could also serve older adults who currently have mobility options but would prefer a ride-hailing alternative for at least some trips.
This study addressed whether and how older Californians use ride-hailing, as well as the potential of this travel mode to meet the needs of older adults now and in the coming decade. An online survey was completed by 2,917 California adults aged 55 and …

Machine Learning Discovery Of Computational Model Efficacy Boundaries, Michael S. Murillo, Mathieu Marciante, Liam G. Stanton
Machine Learning Discovery Of Computational Model Efficacy Boundaries, Michael S. Murillo, Mathieu Marciante, Liam G. Stanton
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Computational models are formulated in hierarchies of variable fidelity, often with no quantitative rule for defining the fidelity boundaries. We have constructed a dataset from a wide range of atomistic computational models to reveal the accuracy boundary between higher-fidelity models and a simple, lower-fidelity model. The symbolic decision boundary is discovered by optimizing a support vector machine on the data through iterative feature engineering. This data-driven approach reveals two important results: (i) a symbolic rule emerges that is independent of the algorithm, and (ii) the symbolic rule provides a deeper understanding of the fidelity boundary. Specifically, our dataset is composed …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Data mining is characterized as searching for useful information through very large data sets. Some of the key and most common techniques for data mining are association rules, classification, clustering, prediction, and sequential models. For a wide range of applications, data mining techniques are used. Data mining plays a significant role in disease detection in the health care industry. The patient should be needed to detect a number of tests for the disease. However, the number of tests should be reduced by using data mining techniques. In time and performance, this reduced test plays an important role. Heart disease is …
