Mineta Transportation Institute
COVID-19 brought the public’s attention to the critical value of transportation and supply chain workers as lifelines to access food and other supplies. This report examines essential job skills required of the middle-skill workforce (workers with more than a high school degree, but less than a four-year college degree). Many of these middle-skill transportation and supply chain jobs are what the Federal Reserve Bank defines as “opportunity occupations” -- jobs that pay above median wages and can be accessible to those without a four-year college degree. This report lays out the complex landscape of selected technological disruptions of the supply …
Approximate Calculations Of The Net Economic Impact Of Global Warming Mitigation Targets Under Heightened Damage Estimates, Patrick T. Brown, Harry Saunders
Approximate Calculations Of The Net Economic Impact Of Global Warming Mitigation Targets Under Heightened Damage Estimates, Patrick T. Brown, Harry Saunders
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Efforts to mitigate global warming are often justified through calculations of the economic damages that may occur absent mitigation. The earliest such damage estimates were speculative mathematical representations, but some more recent studies provide empirical estimates of damages on economic growth that accumulate over time and result in larger damages than those estimated previously. These heightened damage estimates have been used to suggest that limiting global warming this century to 1.5 °C avoids tens of trillions of 2010 US$ in damage to gross world product relative to limiting global warming to 2.0 °C. However, in order to estimate the net …

Quantifying variability in the ocean carbon sink remains problematic due to sparse observations and spatiotemporal variability in surface ocean pCO2. To address this challenge, we have updated and improved ECCO-Darwin, a global ocean biogeochemistry model that assimilates both physical and biogeochemical observations. The model consists of an adjoint-based ocean circulation estimate from the Estimating the Circulation and Climate of the Ocean (ECCO) consortium and an ecosystem model developed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Darwin Project. In addition to the data-constrained ECCO physics, a Green's function approach is used to optimize the biogeochemistry by adjusting initial conditions and six biogeochemical …
Relevance Of Generational Cohorts In The Analysis Of Academic Library Usage, Laura D'Aveta, Thomas Sullivan, Tina Budzise-Weaver
Relevance Of Generational Cohorts In The Analysis Of Academic Library Usage, Laura D'Aveta, Thomas Sullivan, Tina Budzise-Weaver
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The literature surrounding student usage of academic libraries often relies upon generational cohort classifications when discussing patterns and preferences. We analyzed the most recent data available at [University] Libraries to determine whether any statistical significance could be attributed to these generational cohort classifications. We found that no significance could be attributed to generational cohorts that could not also be accounted for by other factors, bringing into question the importance of alleged generational differences when making decisions within academic library practice and policy.

The study assesses levels of Information Access Skills (IAS) in social science researchers at select central universities in Delhi. Questionnaire was used to collect relevant data on skills like information browsing, use of information search tools, and information search strategy consisting of natural language search, keyword search and Boolean search. The descriptive and inferential statistical tools like ANOVA, Post-hoc test using LSD were used to analyze and interpret the collected data. On the competency scale, a big total of 46.2% of researchers were found incompetent in IAS. Suggests measures to enhance the IAS levels of information privileged researchers.

An Assessment Of Demographic Factors As Predictors Of Career Commitment Of Librarians In Universities In Southern Nigeria., Mercy Arodovwe Igere Mrs
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Unwillingness and negative attitude of librarians was observed as a factor that hinders users from accessing information resources in most developing country libraries. This negative attitude could be associated with the demographic factors of the librarians hence this study investigated demographic factors as predictors of career commitment of librarians in South-South universities, Nigeria. Three research questions guided the study and three hypotheses were formulated at 0.05 level of significance using simple regression analysis. The research questions and hypotheses were analysed using inferential statistics such as simple regression analysis. The population comprised 197 librarians in universities of South-South, Nigeria. Questionnaire was …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Access is the primary concern of a library thus information retrieval tool like an abstract is as important as the Online Public Access Catalog. Abstracting then plays an important role in improving access to information that is needed by library users. Librarians then perform this task primarily to guide the users in deciding whether an information resource will be consulted or not. The study utilized the descriptive method of research using a survey questionnaire to determine the level of knowledge and practices on the parts and types of abstracts and the challenges on abstracts a document surrogate encountered by library …

A Holistic Evaluation Of Buddhism Literature: A Bibliometric Analysis Of Global Publications Related To Buddhism Between 1975 And 2017, Ghouse Modin Nabeesab Mamdapur, Engin Senel
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Although Buddhism is the fourth largest religion of the world with almost 500 million followers, to the best of our knowledge, academic literature lacks a bibliometric study investigating Buddhism documents. We used four databases provided by Web of Science; Thomson Reuters to extract the academic documents related to Buddhism and included all items published between 1975 and 2017. We generated info-maps and info-graphics showing distribution of world countries’ publication productivity and connections in bibliometric networks. A total of 25,267 articles were included and the most common document types were original articles, reviews and meeting reports (76.11, 19,38 and 3.84, respectively). …

Open Access Resources: Option For Libraries In A Challenged Economy, Isaac E. Anyira, Imade Idubor
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Inadequacy of information resources has emerged as a major challenge facing libraries in Nigeria currently. The causes of this inadequacy include poor funding of libraries, high cost of materials, high exchange rate (as many library resources are imported) and global economic recession. The open access initiative presents the library with the solution to this challenge by providing access to high quality E-journals, E-books and other information bearing resource at minimal or no cost at all. This paper considered what constitutes open access resources, reasons why libraries should embrace them, their sources and web addresses, and the barriers to their integration …
