Non-Linear Principal Component Analysis (Approximation By A Second-Order Taylor Series), John Viggiano
Non-Linear Principal Component Analysis (Approximation By A Second-Order Taylor Series), John Viggiano
Theses
Linear Principal Component Analysis (LPCA) has been applied in multivariate analysis because of its many optimality properties. However, when applied to locate singularities in a set of data, LPCA is only able to locate linear singularities. If the problem being considered tends to produce variables with non-linear relationships, such as with non-linear regression, LPCA is necessarily of limited utility in identifying singularities. Non-linear generalizations of PCA have been suggested in the literature. Essentially, these involve augmenting the data with higher-order terms, in particular square and cross product terms, and running a LPCA on the augmented data set. The problem with …

An Airborne Thermal Remote Sensing Calibration Technique, I. D. Macleod
An Airborne Thermal Remote Sensing Calibration Technique, I. D. Macleod
Theses
A calibration technique for airborne thermal remote sensing systems without the requirement for ground truth or multiple altitude measure ments is developed and evaluated. This technique is based on vertical and offset look angles and in effect corrects for image degradation due to atmospheric effects . The results were evaluated by comparison to a multiple altitude regression technique using previously generated imagery, and by statistical methods, including an error analysis. Assuming that the multiple altitude regression technique was exact, the error on apparent temperature produced by this angular technique was 0.32C.

The Application Of The Conjugate Gradient Method To The Solution Of Transient Electromagnetic Scattering From Thin Wires, Sadasiva M. Rao, Tapan K. Sarkar, Sohail A. Dianat
The Application Of The Conjugate Gradient Method To The Solution Of Transient Electromagnetic Scattering From Thin Wires, Sadasiva M. Rao, Tapan K. Sarkar, Sohail A. Dianat
Articles
Previous approaches to the problem of computing scattering by conducting bodies have utilized the well-known marching-on-in-time solution procedures. However, these procedures are very dependent on discretization techniques and sometimes lead to instabilities as the time progresses. Moreover, the accuracy of the solution cannot be verified easily, and usually there is no error estimation. In this paper we describe the conjugate gradient method for solving transient problems. For this method, the time and space discretizations are independent of one another. The method has the advantage of a direct method as the solution is obtained in a finite number of steps and …

Optimization Of Vehicle Suspensions Subjected To Random Excitation, Rifaquat Ali Cheema
Optimization Of Vehicle Suspensions Subjected To Random Excitation, Rifaquat Ali Cheema
Theses
This study provides basic information on the analysis and optimization of vehicle suspension systems with a damped absorber attached to the sprung mass and the un sprung mass. This study is also concerned with comparing these systems with a optimized conventional system. A two degree of freedom linear model subjected to guideway irregularity, described as a hyperbolic displacement spectral density, random excitation is chosen for studying the system. Dimensionless space and design parameters are selected to allow for adequate generality. The objective function incorporates the tire-terrain normal force, as an indication of the vehicle controllability, constrained by the sprung mass …
A Signal-To-Noise Ratio Analysis Of An Autoradiographic Image Enhancement Process, Donald R. Williams
A Signal-To-Noise Ratio Analysis Of An Autoradiographic Image Enhancement Process, Donald R. Williams
Theses
A signal-to-noise ratio(SNR) analysis of a S-35 thiourea autoradiographic image enhancement process incorporating subproportional bleaches is performed, with emphasis on diagnostic medical Imagery. Quantifying SNR through a spatial frequency definition of DQE and NEQ, these metrics were compared between donor and receiver-composite stages. While improvements in radiometric speed and gamma were noted in the receiver-composite, these gains were more than offset in a SNR sense by correspondingly lower MTF and higher Wiener spectrum values. As a result the donor's DQF_max of .30 exceeded that of the receiver-composite's DQE_max by 50%. Similarly, ImCXA the donor's NEQ_max exceeded that of the receiver …
