A Study To Eliminate Moire Patterns Produced In Color Separations When Scanning Polachrome Cs Transparency Film On The Hell Dc-300 B/L Laser Scanner, Edwin Parker Price

Theses

The Polaroid Corporation, in May of 1983, introduced Polachrome CS color transparency film and a new process called the Autoprocess system. This system offers the convenience of obtaining instant color transparencies in about three minutes. The film has excellent projection and viewing characteristics. The product was designed to have its largest market with professional photographers. Polachrome's construction creates problems for the printer in that moire patterns occur during the separation process. This study gives a short background for both additive color screen films and dye layer films, and a comparison is made to help the reader understand the problems with …

The Fabrication And Testing Of A Lead Iodide Photovoltaic Cell, Keith Greenberg Feb 1985

The Fabrication And Testing Of A Lead Iodide Photovoltaic Cell, Keith Greenberg

Theses

A new type of photovoltaic cell using lead iodide as the photosensitive element and aluminum and silver as electrodes was constructed and then tested for open circuit voltage, monochromatic quantum yield of short circuit current, and fill factor. A similar cell was also fabricated using the familiar merocyanine dye M-8 as the photosensitive element for use in a control experiment. Minimal open circuit voltages of not more than 26 mV were obtained for lead iodide while much larger photovoltaic parameters were obtained for M-8. The poor and impermanent performance of lead iodide relative to the organic control suggests that lead …

The Static Analysis Of A Complex Optical-Mechanical System Utilizing The Finite Element Method, Thaddeus A. Kciuk Jan 1985

The Static Analysis Of A Complex Optical-Mechanical System Utilizing The Finite Element Method, Thaddeus A. Kciuk

Theses

This thesis utilizes the finite element method (MSC/NASTRAN) to perform an analysis on an optical-mechanical laser scanner used in the imaging industry. A Normal Modes analysis was conducted to determine the real eigenvalues and their associated eigenvectors. The results of the analysis (modal frequencies and modal shapes) were then compared with empirical data measured using a FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) analyzer with modal software (Hewlett Packard 5423A Dynamic Signal Analyzer). The dynamic characteristics of the system optical output beam and optical components were evaluated by simulating the optical components using rigid bar elements. A modal frequency response analysis was performed …

The Production Of Custom Variable Neutral Density Filters Using Film And A Computer Controlled Imaging Device, Gregory A. Hermanson Jan 1985

The Production Of Custom Variable Neutral Density Filters Using Film And A Computer Controlled Imaging Device, Gregory A. Hermanson

Theses

A system for generating custom variable neutral density filters has been built, characterized, and demonstrated. The desired densities for a neutral density filter are entered into the controlling computer as a function of distance. The program which generates the filter density profile is designed to vary the exposure time by controlling the velocity of the film as it moves under a slit aperture. A custom illumination system was designed and built to provide constant lamp output. The technique can provide the film with the exposure necessary to produce a given density profile.

Mobile Telephone System And Non-Wire Line Network, Daniel Chi Man Cheung Jan 1985

Mobile Telephone System And Non-Wire Line Network, Daniel Chi Man Cheung

Theses

The need to communicate with non-fixed points without the use of wires led to the development of mobile telephone systems in the early 1920's. Since then, the expanding need for mobile phone service and resulting growth have led to the development of the Advanced Mobile Phone Service (AMPS) by the Bell System. This thesis describes the AMPS system and explains how service is provided to mobile units roaming in a typical area of up to 25 square miles. A network is proposed to interconnect service areas to expand the coverage to a much larger geographic area. Efficient use is made …

An Examination Of Ink Smoothing In A Web-Offset Printing Press, James M. Salacain Jan 1985

An Examination Of Ink Smoothing In A Web-Offset Printing Press, James M. Salacain

Theses

A study was initiated which was designed to examine the systems used for ink smoothing in a web-offset printing press. The study evaluated several oscillating roller systems and subjectively compared them using several criteria. It was found that although some of the systems possessed a number of desirable characteristics, none were of high enough overall quality to be considered for implementation.

Short Time Spectrum Analysis-Synthesis Of Speech, Dusan Vujcic Jan 1985

Short Time Spectrum Analysis-Synthesis Of Speech, Dusan Vujcic

Theses

This thesis presents an extensive study of the short time spectrum analysis-synthesis of speech. This type of speech processing attempts to synthesize speech without the short time Fourier transform phase information. Several existing analysis-synthesis methods are presented. In addition, five other methods are attempted experimentally. The results of these experiments are explained, identifying some very important properties of the short time spectrum analysis-synthesis. One of the methods was shown to synthesize a high fidelity speech. Finally, a comparison is made between this method and other known methods which are based on short time Fourier transform approach.

Design And Implementation Of A Communications Package To Network A Group Of Microcomputers, Narayan J. Kulkarni Jan 1985

Design And Implementation Of A Communications Package To Network A Group Of Microcomputers, Narayan J. Kulkarni

Theses

With the development of VLSI technology, more and more desktop computers are coming into the marketplace. A need is often felt to network these computers together to share their resources for a larger application where the data needs to be interchanged between these computers. This thesis work is an attempt to design and implement a communications package that allows various desk-top computers to communicate between each other by exchanging data between them. The computers in this network send data to each other through a central message server. Physical medium of communication between these systems is standard RS-232C communication lines. The …

Mathematical Modeling Of The Nikon Lampas Reflection Measuring Microscope, William O. Bennett Jan 1985

Mathematical Modeling Of The Nikon Lampas Reflection Measuring Microscope, William O. Bennett

Theses

A mathematical model of the Nikon Lampas Reflection Measuring Microscope for the fine-line lithography in integrated circuit manufacture has been developed. Optical intensity profiles of a perfect line were computed using computer software supplied by the National Bureau of Standards. The programs were modified for the Lampas microscope. From line profiles, the accuracy of the microscope was calculated. The microscope is accurate down to 6/10 of a micron. All lines below 6/10 of a micron were unresolved.

Comparison Of Existing Linewideth Measuring Systems To An Experimental Unit That Enables Minimization Of Vibration During Measurement, James G. De Witt

Theses

An experimental unit was built to minimize vibration during measurement of linewidths on integrated circuit photomasks. Linewidths in the range of 0.522 microns to 12.076 microns were measured with the Nikon LASER scanning system. Optical Specialties Inc. VLS-I video system, Nikon Micro Pattern Analyzer slit-scanning system, and the experimental unit. Average variances of 0.0096, 0.0164, 0.0377, and 0.3627 were calculated for each system respectively. The variances were compared using an F-test with the result that each system was significantly different for each linewidth. A mathematical model was derived to predict the smallest resolvable detail given the frequency and amplitude of …

High Performance Displacement Chromatography Of Estrodial Analogs, David Minicuci Jan 1985

High Performance Displacement Chromatography Of Estrodial Analogs, David Minicuci

Theses

A normal phase semi-preparative scale separation of the estradiol analogs 17-<*-propenyl-3 , 17^-estradiol and 17-*-propenyl-^-estradiol-3-acetate was carried out using High Performance Dicplacement Chromatography (HPDC). Two conventional analytical (10 urn, 4.6 x 250 mm, silica) columns were utilized in series for the semi-preparative system. The displacer used was triethanol amine in chloroform, 10% v/v. A total of 169.8 milligrams of the estradiol analogs were separated and collected in their form from the column effluent. The HPDC runs were monitored using thin layer chromatography (silica TLC) . The displacement fractions were analyzed using HPLC in linear elution mode. Carrier and displacer solutions were scouted for using silica TLC. Displacement TLC was used to find the proper concentration of displacer. The migration rates of the displacer solution on the TLC plates were compared to that on the column using HPLC in the frontal mode. HPDC proved suitable for the utilization of conventional analytical HPLC instrumenta tion for a semi-preparative scale separation.

Balancing Of The Shaking Force, Shaking Moment, Input Torque And Bearing Forces In Planar Four Bar Linkages, Timothy C. Hewitt Jan 1985

Balancing Of The Shaking Force, Shaking Moment, Input Torque And Bearing Forces In Planar Four Bar Linkages, Timothy C. Hewitt

Theses

The theory, development and application of a computer program to balance the combined effects of the shaking force, shaking moment, input torque and individual bearing forces in four bar linkages is presented. The theory assumes the linkage to consist of rigid bodies, and is limited to balancing planar four bar linkages other than sliders. Balancing is accomplished using circular counterweights which are tangentially attached to the bearing joints. Counterweight sizes and locations are determined using nonlinear programming techniques where an objective function, dependent upon all the kinetic parameters, is minimized. The balancing program is capable of performing diverse functions. The …
