Scaling Lightness Perception And Differences Above And Below Diffuse White And Modifying Color Spaces For High-Dynamic-Range Scenes And Images, Ping-Hsu Chen Jan 2011

Scaling Lightness Perception And Differences Above And Below Diffuse White And Modifying Color Spaces For High-Dynamic-Range Scenes And Images, Ping-Hsu Chen

Theses

The first purpose of this thesis was to design and complete psychophysical experiments for scaling lightness and lightness differences for achromatic percepts above and below the lightness of diffuse white (L*=100). Below diffuse white experiments were conducted under reference conditions recommended by CIE for color difference research. Overall a range of CIELAB lightness values from 7 to 183 was investigated. Psychophysical techniques of partition scaling and constant stimuli were applied for scaling lightness perception and differences, respectively. The results indicate that the existing L* and CIEDE2000-weighting functions approximately predict the trends, but don't well fit the visual data. Hence, three …

Ray-Traced Simulation Of Radiation Pressure For Optical Lift, Timothy Peterson Jan 2011

Ray-Traced Simulation Of Radiation Pressure For Optical Lift, Timothy Peterson

Theses

When light refracts at a surface, it changes the direction and intensity of the light rays. By Newton's 3rd law, this process imparts a small momentum to the object. This effect can be exploited to manipulate very small objects, by carefully selecting the shape and optical properties of the object. This thesis describes a computational model based on the laws of physics to determine the forces and torques resulting from light interacting with a hemicylindrical particle. This model has been successfully used to predict for the first time a phenomenon called optical lift.

Studies Toward The Total Synthesis Of Trocheliophorolide A, Stephanie Dorn Jan 2011

Studies Toward The Total Synthesis Of Trocheliophorolide A, Stephanie Dorn

Theses

Transition metal-mediated carbon-carbon bond forming reactions are among the most synthetically useful chemical transformations in modern organic synthesis. The most expedient routes toward many natural products and compounds of pharmacological interest involve such reactions. Our research focuses on the development of a novel synthetic route towards the total synthesis of the novel antibacterial natural product trocheliophorolide A using such transition metal-mediated reactions. Specifically, trocheliophorolide A was envisioned to be synthesized via a Stille coupling between a butenolide and an unsaturated sidechain. The butenolide synthesis was optimized and several routes to synthesize the sidechain were investigated. This thesis will detail the …

Evaluation Of Rsl History As A Tool For Assistance In The Development And Evaluation Of Computer Vision Algorithms, Ben Holm

Theses

A revision of Recognition Strategy Language (RSL), a domain-specific language for pattern recognition algorithm development, is in development. This language provides several tools for pattern recognition algorithm implementation and analysis, including composition of operations and a detailed history of those operations and their results. This research focuses on that history and shows that for some problems it provides an improvement over traditional methods of gathering information. When designing a pattern recognition algorithm, bookkeeping code in the form of copious logging and tracing code must be written and analyzed in order to test the effectiveness of procedures and parameters. The amount …

An Analysis Of The Implementation-Potential Of The Threaded Engram Database Model, Sourabh Mehta

Theses

The row-and-column orientation of the Relational Database Model is optimized for the storage of "data," but is not optimized for the storage of "information." This capstone project, researches the different human memory models, in-order to understand how memories are formed and how independent memories are linked together. The memory models explored include the Atkinson-Shiffrin memory model, Baddeley's model of working memory, and the Memory-Prediction model. The results of this investigation of human memory serve as a foundation for the design and implementation of a new database model, called the Threaded Engram Database (TED) model.

Dynamic Load Balancing Based On Live Migration Of Virtual Machines: Security Threats And Effects, Melvin Ver Jan 2011

Dynamic Load Balancing Based On Live Migration Of Virtual Machines: Security Threats And Effects, Melvin Ver

Theses

Live migration of virtual machines (VMs) is the process of transitioning a VM from one virtual machine monitor (VMM) to another without halting the guest operating system, often between distinct physical machines, has opened new opportunities in computing. It allows a clean separation between hardware and software, and facilitates fault management, load balancing, and low-level system maintenance. Implemented by several existing virtualization products, live migration also aids in aspects such as high availability services, transparent mobility and consolidated management. While virtualization and live migration enable important new functionality, the combination introduces novel security challenges. A virtual machine monitor that incorporates …

An Analysis Of The Million Module March Algorithm Applied To The Atron Robotic Platform, James Phipps Jan 2011

An Analysis Of The Million Module March Algorithm Applied To The Atron Robotic Platform, James Phipps

Theses

The Million Module March algorithm is a locomotion planning algorithm for self-reconfiguring robotic systems. It was first introduced by Robert Fitch and Zack Butler. It has already been proven to successfully plan movement for a kinematic abstraction whose traits are very different from the kinematic traits of the ATRON system. In this work we further examine this algorithm, and an adaptation of it to the ATRON robotic system. We examine a two dimensional proof of the reachability of connected configurations of sliding squares, and expand the proof to the three dimensional SlidingCube model of a self-reconfiguring robot. Using this proof, …

The objective of this paper is to introduce the reader to the world of IP multicasting. I intend to achieve this goal by providing an introduction that bridges the gap between the existing unicast networks and the developing multicast network. The basics of multicast that is covered in the earlier chapter includes the multicast addressing scheme, different protocols used for multicast transmission, various distribution trees that are formed by these protocols and various aspects of multicast forwarding. We take a look at IGMP which is the protocol that runs between the host devices and their first hop multicast routers, enabling …

Scalable Cooperative Caching Algorithm Based On Bloom Filters, Nodirjon Siddikov Jan 2011

Scalable Cooperative Caching Algorithm Based On Bloom Filters, Nodirjon Siddikov

Theses

This thesis presents the design, implementation and evaluation of a novel cooperative caching algorithm based on the bloom filter data structure. The new algorithm uses a decentralized approach to resolve the problems that prevent the existing solutions from being scalable. The problems consist of an overloaded manager, a communication overhead among clients, and a memory overhead on the global cache. The new solution reduces the manager load and the communication overhead by distributing the global cache information among cooperating clients. Thus, the manager no longer maintains the global cache. Furthermore, the memory overhead is decreased due to a bloom filter …

Versatile Fpga Architecture For Skein Hashing Algorithm, David Webster Jan 2011

Versatile Fpga Architecture For Skein Hashing Algorithm, David Webster

Theses

Digital communications and data storage are expanding at fast rates, increasing the need for advanced cryptographic standards to validate and provide privacy for that data. One of the basic components commonly used in information security systems is cryptographic hashing. Cryptographic hashing involves the compression of an arbitrary block of data into a fixed-size string of bits known as the hash value. These functions are designed such that it is computationally infeasible to determine a message that results in a given hash value. It should also be infeasible to find two messages with the same hash value and to change a …

Lasing Behavior Of An Active Nim-Pim Directional Coupler, Riffat Ara Jan 2011

Lasing Behavior Of An Active Nim-Pim Directional Coupler, Riffat Ara

Theses

Negative index materials are a subclass of metamaterials which are materials having properties that are not found in nature. Present day research regarding metamaterials indicates that they possess remarkable behavior. This thesis is focused on a metamaterial-based photonic directional coupler employing a negative index material (NIM) in one of its waveguides while the other waveguide consists of a positive index material (PIM). A NIM-PIM directional coupler (DC) exhibits optical feedback even without any actual traditional resonator structure. This feedback exists because of the NIM employed in one of the structure's waveguides. The ability of a NIM-PIM DC to propagate light …

An Analysis Of Flow-Based Routing, Jennifer Casella Jan 2011

An Analysis Of Flow-Based Routing, Jennifer Casella

Theses

Since their development in the early 1970's, the underlying function of IP routers has not changed - they still support a best effort delivery method in order to pass frames from source to destination. With the advent of newer, bandwidth intensive Internet-based services and applications, such as video conferencing and telemedicine, many individuals wonder if the current approach to routing is the most practical. "The Internet needs to provide quality of service ("QoS") as predictably as conventional circuit switching networks. Although some QoS capabilities in an isolated environment have been demonstrated, providing end-to-end QoS at a large scale across the …

Are American Women Turning To Reusable And Greener Menstrual Products Due To Health And Environmental Pollution Concerns?, Ann Borowski

Theses

This research investigates environmental and health concerns related to disposable tampons and sanitary napkins. Much like diapers, tampons and sanitary napkins are comprised of synthetic materials that do not readily decompose. A woman will menstruate for approximately 40 years of her life. During that time, a significant amount of disposable feminine hygiene products accumulate in landfills and at times wash up on the shores of local beaches. Additionally, during the manufacturing and bleaching process, there is potential for dioxin to be created which has both health and environmental impacts. From a health perspective, many women experience discomfort, infection, and in …

Implementing Field Portable X-Ray Fluorescence During Environmental Investigations For Radioactive Materials, Neil Miller Jan 2011

Implementing Field Portable X-Ray Fluorescence During Environmental Investigations For Radioactive Materials, Neil Miller

Theses

During sampling or remediation of radiologically contaminated sites quantitative results are needed to determine where to sample or where to excavate soils. Although some portable gamma spectroscopy equipment does exist for field identification of radionuclides, they are not commonly used during remedial investigations. The current, and very common, process for sampling involves scanning soil with field portable gross measuring radiation detectors (i.e. Sodium Iodide, Scintillation, etc) that measure counts per minute of ionizing radiation; this does not give any information on the nuclides present or their concentrations in the soil. Samples are then collected at biased locations, based on the …

Development Of Low Temperature Oxidation For Crystalline Silicon Thin Film Transistor Applications, Ryan Rettmann Jan 2011

Development Of Low Temperature Oxidation For Crystalline Silicon Thin Film Transistor Applications, Ryan Rettmann

Theses

Development of thin-film transistor (TFT) backplane technologies has traditionally been limited by the substrate materials used; amorphous (a-Si) or polycrystalline (p-Si) silicon on glass. These materials have lower carrier mobility as compared to traditional crystalline silicon CMOS technologies, resulting in performance limitations. In addition, thermal oxidation is not a viable option for two reasons: oxidation on non-crystalline silicon is non-uniform, and the temperature limitations of the glass, 600 °C, prevents any appreciable SiO2 growth. This constrains the potential for a high-quality Si-SiO2 interface necessary for aggressive scaling. Corning Incorporated has developed a new Silicon-on-Glass (SiOG) substrate material addressing some of …

State Estimation Filtering Algorithms For Vehicle Attitude Determination Using A Dual-Arc Accelerometer Array And 3-Axis Rate Gyroscopes, Aaron Zimmerman Jan 2011

State Estimation Filtering Algorithms For Vehicle Attitude Determination Using A Dual-Arc Accelerometer Array And 3-Axis Rate Gyroscopes, Aaron Zimmerman

Theses

Sensor measurements are corrupted by biases, noise and drift effects and, in order to provide accurate measurements, these errors need to be estimated and, thus, eliminated. The current model used an Extended Kalman filter for the estimation of rate gyroscope measurement errors. This work improves upon that filter by applying a more robust, more accurate and more reliable Unscented Kalman filter. In addition, an algorithm for estimating the accelerometer measurement errors is developed using control theory. Using the attitude estimate from the Unscented Kalman filter, an error signal is formed between that attitude and the attitude estimates from the accelerometer …

Monte Carlo Comparison Of Back-Propagation, Conjugate-Gradient, And Finite-Difference Training Algorithms For Multilayer Perceptrons, Stephen Wehry

Theses

Monte Carlo Simulation is used to compare the performance of the Back-Propagation, Conjugate-Gradient, and Finite-Difference algorithms when training simple Multilayer Perceptron networks to solve pattern recognition and bit counting problems. Twelve individual simulations will be run for each training algorithm-test problem combination, resulting in an overall total of 72 simulations. The random elements in each Monte Carlo simulation are to be the individual synaptic weights between layers, which will be uniformly distributed. Two other factors, the size of the hidden layer and the exponent of the error function, will also be tested within the simulation plan outlined above.

Ip Address Registration Database: Definitions For Access, Security, And Implementation, Lesa Ouellette Jan 2011

Ip Address Registration Database: Definitions For Access, Security, And Implementation, Lesa Ouellette

Theses

This thesis analyzes the process of IP assignment and internet policing and proves that a national IP address database will allow law enforcement and governmental agencies improvements in real-time, secure access to subscriber identifying information without compromising the security and privacy of internet users. For the last three decades, the process of monitoring access, usage and IP address assignments has fallen on the internet service providers who allow access to the internet through their IP portals. Since they held the door to the internet, there was reasonability in the idea that they should monitor who goes in and out of …

Balancing Truth Error And Manual Processing In The Pdq System, Douglass Huang Jan 2011

Balancing Truth Error And Manual Processing In The Pdq System, Douglass Huang

Theses

Production Data Quality (PDQ) is a specialized pattern classifier whose main purpose is to assess independently the data quality of a production classifier. It accomplishes this by producing a high quality Truth from the source input, and then using the Truth to identify errors in the production classifier's output data. Previous studies have shown close agreement between PDQ processing outcomes and a particular mathematical model of the system. In this study we describe and analyze an expanded model that addresses the potential tradeoff between Truth error and manual processing in PDQ, with an eye towards informing operational decisions about precision …

Establishing Parameters For Problem Difficulty In Permutation-Based Genetic Algorithms, Adam Nogaj

Theses

This thesis examines the performance of genetic algorithm (GA) crossover techniques within two problems: n-queens with poison (NQWP) and processor scheduling (PS). Each problem was analyzed at sizes of 32, 64, and 128, referring to number of queens to be placed and number of single-time-unit processes to be scheduled, respectively. The specific crossover techniques studied were cycle crossover, order crossover, partially mapped crossover, merging crossover, and one-point, two-point, and uniform signature representation crossover, in addition to various greedy approaches. In conjunction with tests that vary crossover techniques, experimentation was performed to determine what percentage of problem constraints (poisoned squares for …

Cloth Simulation Using Hardware Tessellation, David Huynh Jan 2011

Cloth Simulation Using Hardware Tessellation, David Huynh

Theses

Cloth simulation has long been a topic of interest in computer graphics since the early works of Terzopoulos et al. Over the years many techniques have been developed to simulate cloth. Though the general concern has been on the physical accuracy of the simulation. As the simulation gets closer to computational sciences the complexity also increases which at times may come at the cost of real-time performance. With newer and more powerful graphics hardware coming out each year, researchers are starting to shy away from the traditional CPU implementation and turning towards the GPU to offload work. As the parallel …

Nat Denial Of Service: An Analysis Of Translation Table Behavior On Multiple Platforms, Nathan Winemiller

Theses

Network Address Translation or NAT, is a technology that is used to translate internal addresses to globally routable addresses on the internet. It is used extensively in almost every network requiring global connectivity due to the current lack of IPv4 addresses. The primary mechanism used to facilitate the translation of internal addresses to external addresses and vice versa is the translation table. This study takes an in-depth look at how five different vendors: Cisco, Extreme, Linksys, VMWare, and Vyatta, implement the translation table during active NAT sessions. Additionally, this study analyzes the methodology required to fill a translation table and …
